Icy spy! — The Heavy playing a pun
|
” |
The Spy-cicle is a community-created melee weapon for the Spy. It is a long, light blue icicle.
Whilst having the same damage and speed capabilities as the Knife, backstabbed victims will not scream and will turn into solid ice, similar to the golden statue effect from Australium-infused weapons. No death notice will be produced to the enemy team, but a unique sound of ice freezing will be produced, allowing alert players to notice the presence of the Spy.
If the Spy is hit by fire with the weapon active, it will melt and instantly extinguish the Spy while rendering him immune to any further fire for 2 seconds. The effect is fast enough that a Cloaked Spy will remain undamaged even under point-blank Flamethrower fire, only taking damage from the first flame particle. However, the melted icicle is rendered unusable in the process, taking 15 seconds to regenerate. As it melts, the Spy-cicle will emit a loud extinguishing sound; further contact with flames during the two-second interval will still produce the crackling sound that typically accompanies direct damage from the Pyro's Flamethrower, even if the Spy is invisible.
Non-backstab kills achieved will not turn the victim into solid ice, but the kill will still be silent.
If playing in Medieval Mode, the Spy-cicle will regenerate instantly.
The Spy-cicle was contributed to the game via the Steam Workshop under the name "The Cold Shoulder".

Unused content
- There is a unique draw sound effect for this weapon that is unused.
Bugs
- A knife will not respawn with the player. In order to receive a new knife after death, the player must touch a resupply cabinet or wait for the meter to fill.
- In some cases, the frost effect that is supposed to surround the Spy-cicle is found at the Spy's feet.
- If a Spy gets hit by fire while stunned by the Razorback, the knife will not vanish but the knife bar will still recharge and the fire resistance will not extend beyond 2 seconds.
- While cloaked with the Spy-cicle as the active weapon, the frost effect is still visible.
- Backstabbing an Engineer while he is hauling a Building will result in the killfeed displaying the Building's destruction to the enemy team.
- Backstabbing an invisible Spy will lead to an invisible 'Iced' corpse. This corpse will react exactly like a normal Iced victim, but cannot be seen by anybody.
- If someone jumps and is then backstabbed with this weapon, the backstab animation will not play.
- If someone stands on top of an enemy and then gets backstabbed by the Spy-cicle, the ice statue will float in the air until it falls over.
- The Spy will shout a fire-related response when the Spy-cicle's effect is triggered.
- When backstabbing a Heavy who is spinning his Minigun, the corpse will retain the Minigun as well.
- Should the victim of the Spy-cicle speak (such as using voice commands or taunting) after a backstab, the frozen statue of the victim will keep speaking and even move its mouth.
Trivia
- The item's name is a portmanteau of the words "Spy" and "icicle".
- As an homage to the creator's original submitted name, the texture files are named cold_shoulder, referring to the English colloquial phrase "to give someone the cold shoulder".
- The Heavy has a unique backstab animation for this weapon; he shivers as he turns to ice.
- Fire damage resistance and the inability for the Spy to be ignited were both originally tested on variations of the Fire Retardant Suit.
- Once the fire immunity is activated, the user can survive a Hadouken without taking damage, but not if the Hadouken itself activates the fire immunity.
- The Spy-cicle was first teased on the first day of the Australian Christmas Update 2011, on the bottom left corner of the title image.
