The TF2 Backpack Examiner is a community website that enables Team Fortress 2 players to interact with applications pertaining to the trading and crafting systems present in Team Fortress 2. In order to use the website to its full extent, players must first register as a user and then "claim" their Team Fortress 2 Backpack. Backpacks can be claimed by individuals by placing a set of characters on their profile or nickname, which are then used by the website as confirmation that the user is in fact the Backpack's owner. Users have the ability to view the Backpacks of other players and also list their items for trade when away from the game.
TF2 Backpack Examiner was created by Drunken F00l. As of December 2010, nearly 800,000 Team Fortress 2 players have had their Backpacks viewed.
Aside from viewing Backpacks, the website also contains a Blueprints page which lists all possible crafting recipes, and a complete checklist of all items in Team Fortress 2 for each individual player.
Backpacks can be viewed by searching the site or clicking on one of the names present on any of the lists of the most viewed Backpacks, placed on the homepage. The system updates Backpacks upon view and also keeps a detailed Backpack history of the player. The website also keeps a count of the different types of items inside each Backpack, and allows individuals to view a player's current loadout.
When TF2 Backpack Examiner first released the trading application, it had no use other than to organize trades in anticipation of the then-rumoured trading system. Once the Mann Co. Update went live, the site's trading application became practical and allowed users to set up potential trades and view matches with other trades in real-time. This is one of the most popular ways to trade items, as no in-game system has been implemented to find players interested in trading a specific item or combination of items.
Users are currently restricted to single-item trades only. (E.g.: A Sandman for a Black Box) The trading application also restricts the users to two trade categories: Hats or Items. Additionally, once a user submits a trade, they can then view matches based on the item/hat they wish to trade and the desired item/hat. From there, a list of users will appear, where a user can either add as a Steam friend, send a Steam message, or view that user's backpack.
Within the trading application, one can access a "Stats" page that shows items traded between individuals and categorizes them by "Most Wanted", "Least Wanted", "Most Given" and "Least Given". These statistics are an interesting way to track the popularity of certain items on the site.
