A scout hit by the Shortstop slows to 80% of "normal" speed (or 240v), the same speed as a Soldier running forwards (undamaged or without holding the equalizer).  A medic slows to 64% of "normal" speed (or 192v), which is about 18% slower than a Heavy's typical run speed. Pyro, Engineer, Sniper, and Spy all slow to 60% of "normal" speed, or 180v(which makes logical sense considering that they normally run at "normal" speed and each pellet slows 40%); the new run speed is approximately 22% slower than typical Heavy speed. A demo slows to 56% "normal" speed, or 168v, 26% slower than a typical Heavy.  A soldier slows to 48% of "normal" run speed, or 144v.  Finally, a Heavy slows to 42% of "normal" run speed (138v), which is just faster than a crouching scout.

The Scout on the speed of your death

The Shortstop is a craftable primary weapon for the Scout class. It appears as a four barrelled Pistol.

This weapon is unique in that it is modeled after the Pistol but is placed in the primary slot. It functions similar to a Shotgun; instead of firing from a magazine, each chamber fires a single shot, or Rat-shot, which must be reloaded manually. It reloads all four shots at once, making it a good hybrid of the Scattergun and the Pistol. Each shot has little bullet spread making this an ideal weapon to use where range and accuracy are a concern. Because it is a Pistol, however, it will draw from the same ammo reserves as the normal Pistol if both are equipped.

Each pellet fired is capable of inflicting 40% Slow on the target, which may allow the player to break from the fight or close in to deal more damage. This Slow effect is much less than that dealt by Natascha, which slows any target to ~113 Hammer Units per second, which is more than a 60% reduction from the "normal" movement speed of 300 HU/sec.

Trivia

  • The design of the Shortstop is similar to the COP 357 Derringer.
  • A pepperbox pistol or 'pepper gun' is any small handgun or pistol with multiple barrels fixed around a center axis.
  • Taunting with the Shortstop performs the Pistol taunt, not the typical taunt for the Scattergun or Force-A-Nature.
  • It's very likely that this weapon was to be a secondary weapon, but the newly added bonus for using all the weapons and hats from the same item sets must have made it necessary to be a primary.
  • The Shortstop is the first weapon to have its model derived from that of a weapon used in a different slot.
  • The name is a very obvious reference to a position in the Scout's favorite sport, baseball. (The Shortstop is the defensive field-man between Second and Third base) It is also the description of a delivery boy's work, which tends to have very little breaks and perform his job with nimbleness.
  • The Shortstop deals 12 damage per pellet, each round has 4 pellets, and the Scout carries 40 rounds (including the 4 loaded in the Pistol). Therefore, The Scout can deal 1920 damage using the Shortstop not counting Crits.
  • Unlike the Scattergun or Force-A-Nature, this weapon will Crit in the same fashion as the Pistol. If you Crit with the Shortstop, all consecutive shots will be Critical hits as well until you have to reload. Whether this is a feature or a bug is currently undetermined.
  • There is a bug at the end of the reloading animation, in that the ammo you reload with will fall down out of the gun. (As of October 2nd, 2010)
  • The Shortstop is a mix of the Scattergun and the Force of Nature, in that it has 4 shots.
  • It is unlike the normal Pistol in that it is reloaded like the Force-of-Nature instead of using a clip, given the design, a clip would be impossible to use on it.
