Bloody hell! Those ones were my favorites!
The Demoman on his misplaced potatoes.

The [ classified ], better known as the Potato Hat, is a promotional headwear item for all classes. It is a white hard hat with a potato-powered miner's light with a team colored glow, connected by two orange wires with team colored connector insulation. The far side of the hat sports grey electrical tape covering an unknown team colored circular logo.

This hat was awarded from April 5, 2011 to players who had bought the Potato Sack pack, or had owned all the games from the pack, on Steam. It appears to still be available, and it is unknown when it will stop being awarded.

The games contained within the pack consist of 1... 2... 3... KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby), Template:W, Template:W, Template:W, Template:W, Cogs, Template:W, Killing Floor, RUSH, Template:W, Template:W, The Wonderful End of the World, and Template:W.

Update history

April 5, 2011 Patch

  • [Undocumented] This item was added to the game.

Bugs

  • The hat does not drop for all people who own the games in the Potato Sack; an email from Robin Walker has however confirmed the remaining hats will be dropped within the week of April 5th.

Trivia

  • This hat is a reference to the "Potato Clock"[1], a popular science fair project where a potato is used to power a clock or other electronic appliance.
  • There is a paint texture and coding to make this hat paintable, however, it remains unused.
