Gift Wrap is a Tool item added in the October 18, 2010 Patch. The item can be bought from the Mann. Co. store.
The official description is "This gift wrap can be used to package an item as a gift for another player. Wrapped gifts can be delivered to offline players. Items that are normally not tradable can be wrapped and gifted using gift wrap."
After the gift is opened, the gifted item will have a descriptive 'tag' telling you who sent the gift and when you received it.
Description
A common use for gifting is to wrap untradable items up.
Gift Wrap-able Items
The following line has been added in items_game.txt for items that are able to be 'Gift Wrapped'
- "can_gift_wrap" "1"
Un-Gift Wrap-able items
Some non-tradable items are not able to be gift wrapped, thus remaining non-tradable:
- Cheater's Lament
- Mercenary
- Soldier of Fortune
- Grizzled Veteran
- Primeval Warrior
- Bronze Dueling Badge
- Silver Dueling Badge
- Gold Dueling Badge
- Platinum Dueling Badge
- Polycount Pin
- Sticky Jumper
- Golden Wrench
- Community weapons
- Developer Weapons
- Ghastly Gibus
Trivia
- Prior to the October 29, 2010 Patch, using Gift Wrap on any item would make the item fully tradeable (after a recipient opened the gift), regardless of its original trading capability. Another glitch fixed by this patch was the item's name not appearing correctly in the wrapped gift's description; it was stated to contain TF_WEAPON_BAT, regardless of what the Gift Wrap was used on.
- It is possible for gift-wrappable property to be lost further up the crafting chain. For example, crafting 18 non-tradable but gift-wrappable achievement weapons in the usual way results in non-tradable, non-gift-wrappable refined metal.
