The Engineer

The Dueling Banjo is a community-created special taunt for the Engineer.

When activated from the taunts menu, a hay bale appears behind the Engineer while he pulls out a banjo; he then sits down and begins playing it. Pressing Alt-Fire increases the tempo at which the Engineer plays, and smoke begins to rise from his hands. Pressing Primary Fire returns the taunt to its original tempo. When the player ends the taunt, the Engineer places the banjo next to the hay bale and gets up, after which the props disappear.

The Dueling Banjo was contributed to the Steam Workshop.

Bugs

  • The music played from the Dueling Banjo will loop indefinitely if the taunt is viewed in the inventory or Mann Co. Store.
    • This can be fixed by joining a server or typing snd_restart in the console.
  • It's possible to fire a wrangled Sentry Gun while the taunt is initiated.
  • If a player kills themselves with the use of the console while playing the faster tempo, they will respawn and retain the smoke around their hands.
    • Sometimes, this may cause the smoke to spawn on other Engineers present in the server.
  • Occasionally, the smoke effect from the banjo, the banjo, and bale of hay under the Engineer may not spawn at all.
  • Switching from either the regular or the faster tempo may occasionally cause silence to play.
    • This can be fixed by re-initiating the taunt or switching tempos again.

Trivia

  • The item's name and description refer to the movie Deliverance, where the main character with a guitar has a 'duel' with a banjo-playing country boy at the beginning of the movie with the song Dueling Banjos playing in the background.
  • Playing the Dueling Banjo taunt with the Brundle Bundle item set on will increase the Banjo's pitch by 145% just like it would the Engineer's voice.
