*Although the [[Pyro]]'s primary and secondary weapons are held in a right-handed grip,  the Fire Axe, [[Axtinguisher]], [[Homewrecker]], and [[Powerjack]] are all held in a left-handed grip. This may mean that the Pyro is ambidextrous, but it is most likely a developer oversight.

This is due to an old patch which provided the Pyro with more hit animations; previously the Pyro would only swing the Fire Axe vertically down.

The Pyro on axe killing sprees

The Fire Axe is a melee weapon for the Pyro class. It is a classic chopping axe with a wooden handle.

In most circumstances, the Flamethrower is a much better choice for targets in melee range. The Fire Axe, however, is typically used on unaware enemies and for humiliation purposes as it has a high Critical hit chance. The Critical hit animation for the Fire Axe is a swift right to left horizontal swing.
