Wayta duck!
The Scout to victims of low-flying kitchenware

The Flying Guillotine is a community-created promotional secondary weapon for the Scout. It is a meat cleaver with the Chinese characters for "dead meat" (死肉, sǐròu) above the grip.

Unlike the Pistol, the Flying Guillotine is a unique ranged weapon that is thrown in an arc, similarly to the Mad Milk. Primary and secondary fire flings the cleaver at enemies to damage them and inflict Bleeding, but it has no effect against buildings or after bouncing off a surface. Throwing the weapon from a far enough distance and hitting an enemy will result in a mini-crit. Hitting enemies that are stunned will result in a guaranteed critical hit; however, the weapon will not deal random critical hits. Once the weapon is thrown, it will recharge after approximately six seconds. Unlike the projectile of the Sandman, it cannot be picked up from the ground to refill the meter. Like most projectiles, the cleaver can be reflected by an enemy Pyro's Compression blast.

Of note is that the Flying Guillotine has a maximum range; upon traveling a long enough distance, it will act as if it has "landed" and will not deal damage to opponents.

The Flying Guillotine has two different styles, Thirsty and Thirstier. Thirstier adds bloodstains to the blade of the weapon.

The Flying Guillotine was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-ordered Sleeping Dogs on Steam before August 14, 2012, or August 17, 2012, in Europe.

The Flying Guillotine was later contributed to the Steam Workshop, at Valve's request.

Bugs

  • The cleaver can go through thin walls such as setup gates when thrown at the correct angle.
  • This weapon will inflict critital hits if it connects on a target at the exact same moment as a Compression Blast or a bullet from the Natascha.
  • Bleeding from this weapon inflicts critical hit on enemies stunned after Guillotine's hit for the duration of the stun.
  • Reflected Flying Guillotines do not deal mini-crits damage to enemies.
  • The Genuine versions of the cleaver have no taunt, this is due to the Genuine versions of the Triad Pack items being separate items in the schema.
  • Victims killed and turned into ragdolls are sent flying at a strange angle sideways.
  • Critical hit kills with this weapon do not trigger critical hit death screams unless they are the result of a crit boost.
  • Holding down the Alt-Fire button while throwing the Flying Guillotine will stop the Scout's weapon from changing while the button is held. If the button is held down until the weapon has recharged, it will be thrown again, but no animation will be played for it. Additionally, other players will still see the Scout holding the Flying Guillotine while the button is held down.

Trivia

  • The characters on one side of the blade (looking at the cleaver with handle on left, blade pointing downwards) are mirrored.
  • The pronunciation of the characters are phonetically similar to the English word "throw".
  • The flying guillotine is a legendary ranged weapon from the Qing dynasty that is usually in the form of a hat.
