Community voice actors

This page didn't exist yet? Anyway, are there any good reasons why voice actors in community-made maps should not be listed on the Voice actors page? Not even with any pictures or special table formatting. Just a simple bulleted list. Are they relegated to only be listed individually and separately on each article about the maps their voice is heard on, and on the Non-player_characters list? Personally I think they should be listed, but not as elaborately as the other voice actors. Just a "community voice actors" section under it.

Pictogram plus.png  Adding a section in the Voice Actors page is not a bad idea. Moreover, Valve demonstrated that they're willing to add community voice actors now, meaning that there might be more community voice actors in the future.

Pictogram minus.png (specifically, getting their own NPP page) I get where you guys are coming from. Where I come from is the question of whether voice acting on a Community Map is ever so much more notable than Community Map developers that the Community voice actors get a page but the Community Map developers do not.
The core purpose of the NPP pages is to provide a means of linking the names of Real Persons in the wiki to multple topics within the TFwiki and the Real Internet. This was meant to end squabbling about which Internet page to use to link a Real Person while avoiding biographies of Real Persons. I don't see every Community voice actor and developer getting a NPP page, other than EmNudge :) maybe.
Community voice actors and developers are generally, as a rule, linked to their Steam Profile. I do not yet see a need to provide them more links than that, so, the core purpose of a NPP page does not apply.
Perhaps GrampaSwood could eloborate a more about "Just a "community voice actors" section under it." DYM a list at the bottom of Voice actors?

This discussion is not about their own page, but about the inclusion of them on the Voice actors page.
GrampaSwood (talk) 11:34, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Pictogram plus.png Subtable on Voice actors or Announcer, but it wouldn't be a Notable Person Page. Yes, you are correct, I misread the intent of "This page didn't exist yet?" This Talk page is about how to propose, structure, and write Notable Person Pages.
Listing Community Voice actors as a subsection of Voice actors would be "OK"
1) Would we ever think of listing all of the Community
map developers ever?
2) All Community voice actors are Announcers, effectively.
Would it be better to name them on Announcer?

1) Map developers are listed on the map itself.
2) For the sake of the future having non-announcer VA's (possibly), I'd just say "community voice actors".
GrampaSwood (talk) 19:47, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
OK.
I would think, though, generally, that they would be still categorized under Community Developers.

Protection

The protection needs to be removed entirely. There's no reason for it, it breaks the current protection policy as it's not a high risk page and there are no edit wars. These pages are rarely linked throughout the Wiki (most of the pages that are linked are from the nav) and they haven't been proven to be a target for a lot of vandalism. If you really do want protection for these pages, change it to autoconfirmed so people don't have to bother the staff for every edit especially when this should also be equally enforced on language pages (but isn't). But right now, giving it staff-only protection is completely unnecessary when even the class pages (which are some of the highest traffic pages in the game) don't get this level of protection. Sandboxing changes is also only done for highly-used templates to avoid breaking them, it just seems unnecessary for small pages like this.

Pictogram plus.png  Agreed. I'm translating several pages now and noticing inconsistencies, and having to bother one of the moderators to keep making small changes, like "add this link that is missing", "format this to follow the rest of the wiki's formatting" etc.
In case editing wars commence or they become the frequent target of vandals, then sure, make them protected, but right now, I see no point in it. - BrazilianNut (talk) 20:13, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
1. I don't oppose removing protection if there is no other oposition.
2. If there was "no reason for it", then there would never had been protection. IIRC, protection was part of the negotiation for the Admin permission for the project.
3. One reason was, yes, concern over vandalism, but the main reason for protection was concern over the temptation these pages presented for expansion into biographies, which is highly undesirable for this wiki, at least as expressed at that time.
4. Another reason is the temptation for proliferation of pages for lesser staff by newer editors trying to find work. The concept did not envision, in fact excluded, simply making an NPP for everyone on any Valve employee roster.
5. I had recent thoughts on 4. in particular, prompted mainly by the hanging decision on Erik Smith, I have been thinking about clarifications on the policies.
5.a. The policy might need more explanation as to what consists of enough external linkage to warrant an NPP. Should at least one acceptable link be sufficient?
5.b: Conversely, if there are no acceptable links known, should there be no page?
6. I would agree with what might be implicit in BrazilianNut's statements; let's see if vandalism, expansion into biographies, or proliferation aren't really a problem by removing the protections, and we protect the NPPs with policing.
7. We should make sure that there is sufficient emphasis that the NPP should start in a user sandbox, and has received approval before moving into the main space .

Twitter as an acceptable website

Seeing how Twitter has gone down recently, I think we should remove Twitter as an acceptable website. A while ago, they removed the ability for people without an account to access the website and view Tweets for a while (showing that at any point, they could just restrict the whole website), this is exactly the reason we don't allow Discord server links on community event pages and I think we should change Twitter's status as an acceptable website simply because of how unstable it is.

Hmm, I guess that makes sense, I'd say to remove it as well. The only problem is that Twitter can be a source of proof from the creators, as many of them reply from there. However, if we just do the screenshot method + archival of the screenshot on archive.org, it should be sufficient, as it's what we already do for Steam comments and such. If there are any references that link to Twitter instead of an archived Imgur link, these should be replaced (I would suggest archiving the tweet itself but that probably wouldn't work due to having to login). I think there are several community-event pages that has Twitter links that would require to be removed. You mean gone down or rebranded? I agree that it wasn't the strongest link, mainly valid only if the artist was maintained a gallery or community feed. If the artist's X account link is no longer useful to the TF2 Wiki user, then it could be considered for removal. If the X link is removed, and it was the only link for the person, then that person has fallen from the NP classification, FWIW.

It's more that the website itself seems very unstable in its decisions. For example, they announced a while ago that the block feature would disappear, which means the app has to be pulled from the mobile app stores as it breaks ToS (and potentially losing a large part of the userbase, making it unavailable for our mobile users too). Seems like they haven't gone through with this yet, but the instability of the platform makes me question if we should keep it as a trustworthy link. I also don't think that not having any social media links making them non-notable is a bit weird, because their contributions to TF2 still exist, they just don't have any social media.
