Shortstop publicity blurb

The Shortstop is a community-created primary weapon for the Scout. It is a four-barreled derringer-style pistol fitted with pearl grips and loaded with shotgun shells.

Unlike the Scout's other primary weapons, the Shortstop is a rapid-firing weapon that reloads an entire clip of ammunition rapidly, similarly to the Pistol. It fires approximately 40% faster than the Scattergun, but has a clip size of four instead of six. Each shot fires 60% fewer pellets than the Scattergun (resulting in only four pellets), but each pellet deals twice the damage, which results in an overall 20% lower base damage per shot.

The Shortstop is an ideal weapon to use where range and accuracy are a concern, as each shot has a smaller bullet spread (approximately 40% less in diameter), and the pellets will tend to fire in a tightly packed square, but it does not possess the increased damage ramp-up of the Scout's other primaries such as the Scattergun and Force-A-Nature, making it weaker for point-blank combat compared to other Scattergun variants.

When the Shortstop is the active weapon, the player receives an added 20% knockback from all damaging weapons and the compression blast. Additionally, pressing alt-fire (default key: Right Click) will cause the Scout to shove, pushing a single enemy in melee range backwards a set distance, similarly to a compression blast. This shove deals 1 point of damage and does not happen immediately, instead occurring after a short pause. There is a cooldown period of around 1.5 seconds before the player can shove again, and the player cannot shove while reloading or with other weapons.

Like the stock Shotgun and Scattergun, the Shortstop's first shell fires at least one pellet straight down the crosshair before "bullet-spread" takes effect. When random spread is disabled, any shots with the Shortstop form a T-shape consisting of the center row and bottom center position of a 3x3 square.

Critical hits are delivered in a manner similar to pistols, granting 2 seconds of critical hits, as opposed to regular shotguns.

Bugs

  • At a high Field of View, the bullets from the Shortstop can be seen in front of the screen.
  • If the player has their game quality set to low, the Scout will not break open the Shortstop to place bullets inside during each reload.
  • If an enemy is killed via shove damage, it will count as the Scout finished them off, rather then a actual kill.
  • Killing a player with the shove will count as a "world" kill in console, which is incorrect.

Trivia

  • The Shortstop's name is a reference to the shortstop, the fielding position between second and third base in the Scout's favorite sport, baseball. It also seems to be a pun on the Shortstop's old slowdown effect, which was meant to stop enemies for a short time.
  • Peppergun is slang for shotgun (peppering the target); not to be confuse with pepper-box, an older form of pistol with rotating barrels with action resembling a pepper grinder.
  • The Shortstop was modeled to resemble the break action COP 357 Derringer. The Shortstop uses shotgun shells instead of .357 rounds. A limited number of COP .357 derringers were overbored to accept .410 shotgun shells as insurgency and pilot survival weapons.
