Good god, a strange weapons page! Hooray! Problem 10:17, 25 September 2011 (PDT)

Do taunt kills from the Sandman, Flare Gun, Eyelander, Knife and Conniver's Kunai add to their counters? Pwnator 01:54, 28 September 2011 (PDT)

Multi character use

I think there should be a note as to whether the counter carries over for weapons that are shared between multiple classes. For example, lets say I get 1000kills with the pistol on my engie, then I equip the pistol on my scout. does it maintain the counter? Nibelhim 09:42, 28 September 2011 (PDT)

I'm fairly certain it does. If you want, I can check. I have Strange Shotgun. I'll go do it now. --NobleSkull :D - 10:09, 28 September 2011 (PDT)
Got kill with Strange Shotgun and looked at it as Engineer. On all classes, it was 22, then 1 kill with it as Soldier, had 23 on Heavy, Engineer, Pyro and Soldier. --NobleSkull :D - 10:17, 28 September 2011 (PDT)

Humiliation

Do kills during humiliation count? I haven't tested it yet; if someone knows it he should add the information. LeGenD`RaGe 13:08, 13 October 2011 (PDT)

Humiliation kills count, but I think that's sort of a given since points are still awarded during Humiliation. User RagnarHomsar Userlink.png RagnarHomsar 13:09, 13 October 2011 (PDT)

Notes section on counter types.

This section is already ugly, and is only going to continue to get worse as Valve adds more counters. I propose this section be removed in place of listing the counters attached on the availability list. ~ Ath (talk) 08:55, 19 October 2011 (PDT)

10 000 kills?

I notice there is no information about the final rank, so does that mean that nobody who comes here has reached it or are we not allowed to discuss it? I'm almost half-way there with my Minigun.--Katz 13:54, 19 October 2011 (PDT)

There is a rank defined at 10,000 kills I believe but it's not implemented. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 14:00, 19 October 2011 (PDT)

Strange Kritzkrieg

This ranks up on kill assists and not Ubers like the Medigun. Mine is at Midly-Menacing with 45 assists and 17 Ubers. I noticed when it ranked up without me deploying an Uber. Also the kill assist count is displayed on top, with the ubers below in parantheses. My backpack. http://www.tf2items.com/id/drblutengott Dr. Blutengott 18:55, 19 October 2011 (PDT)

Yes this is true. As a proud owner of Hale's own kritzkrieg, I know by heart that the levels are increased by the kill assists. Drsteiner12 02:29, 13 January 2013 (PST)

No Longer Announced Via Alert

So apparently Strange Ranks are no longer 'alerted' on the server when someone reaches it. It just shows up in the chat-feed but not as an actual alert, is that right? Did the Manniversary Update do that? Ѵєяɩτѧѕ 17:51, 22 October 2011 (PDT)

Yes, yes it did. Painted Vintage Merryweather 803020.pngFyahweather 21:24, 22 October 2011 (PDT)

Strange Holy Mackerel

The strange fish has a difference to the other strange weapons that I've seen - rather than saying 'Kills: xxx' it says 'Humiliations: xxx' (see here for screenshot). Should this be added to the trivia page for the Holy Mackerel? Avon 10:40, 24 October 2011 (PDT)

Does it count a "humiliation" as a kill, or just a hit with the fish? » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 03:26, 25 October 2011 (PDT)
A kill, any situation that would cause a kill with the normal fish (i.e. triggering the dead ringer doesn't count). Avon 13:04, 25 October 2011 (PDT)
Probably not notable then. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 15:07, 25 October 2011 (PDT)

Strange Gunslinger

Does it rank up based on Mini Sentry kills instead of the actual Gunslinger melee? Trying to figure out why it's so bloody expensive. It has to be something more than "Only in the Salvaged Crate" Spy Master Kaze 21:36, 3 November 2011 (PDT)

The other strange wrenches rank up on Sentry kills, so the Gunslinger probably does too. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 21:50, 3 November 2011 (PDT)
It has EVERYTHING to do with the crate it is in. Like the Jag, the rankings increase based on Sentry gun kills. Both, however, do track melee kills as well, but they do not progress the rank. SS2R 23:41, 3 November 2011 (PDT)

Degreaser link is wrong.

The link in the table for strange items is wrong for the Degreaser. I tried to figure out how to change it but I can't seem to do it. It points to the backburner page currently. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nagrom 17 (talk) • (contribs)

Thanks for the heads up, it's now fixed. -- Pilk (talk) 04:05, 4 November 2011 (PDT)

Counter Description

What happened to the section explaining the counters which don't track kills (i.e. Medi Gun tracks Ubercharges, Wrench tracks Sentry kills)? That was genuinely useful information and should still be here. I also think it's worth mentioning that the Chargin' Targe only counts shield-bash kills and not melee kills using the targe's crit. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 05:27, 4 November 2011 (PDT)

I removed it because it was reaching an absurd level of bloatedness. As I said in the edit summary, that sort of information should be listed in the availability table. Not in the article body. ~ Ath (talk) 10:09, 4 November 2011 (PDT)
This is still an issue - nowhere on the Wiki does it explain that some counters on Strange weapons don't track kills. I've noticed that the Strange Southern Hospitality tracks melee kills instead of Sentry kills like the other wrenches - this is pretty useful information to have. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 13:40, 2 December 2011 (PST)
I don't know how it was implemented before, but let's add this info back. It's absolutely significant, and the list just keeps getting more complicated as new items come out. Maybe it should be in a separate article with a list that looks like the Equip regions list. Thoughts? --Fashnek 13:43, 2 December 2011 (PST)
That doesn't really work. I've tried something else - re-arranging the current table to order the items in terms of their counter types. Take a look at what I've done here. I think there's potential, though obviously it will need to be shrunk down, and needs some colour and formatting work. I'm not really an expert on these kinds of tables and am struggling a bit, so any help would be appreciated. » Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 15:38, 4 December 2011 (PST)
How about this? It's just a quick mockup I did, but it keeps the current table's formatting and adds the counter information in a fairly concise way. Alcarithemad 00:38, 11 December 2011 (PST)
Great - much simpler and neater than mine at least. Can I suggest you make the main counter (i.e. the one that ranks the weapon up) in bold?
» Cooper Kid (blether) • (contreebs) 04:59, 11 December 2011 (PST)
I hadn't thought of that. It's much better than saying it in the footnote. I also don't know how to apply localization to it like the rest of the template has. Alcarithemad 05:17, 11 December 2011 (PST)
I kind of disagree with Cooper's suggestion. As long as the rank progressing counter is listed first, it's quite simple see what is primary and what is secondary. SS2R 05:28, 11 December 2011 (PST)

Destructions ?

Do destructions of Engi's buildings add kills to s. revolver ? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nouthghule (talk) • (contribs) 19:57, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't know what would make the Revolver different from other Strange weapons, but... I don't think so. I guess Strange weapons only track players killed, unless they have a secondary counter.  –  Epic Eric (T | C) 12:04, 21 November 2011 (PST)

Stranges being dropped?

I remember in a LONG time when I played TF2 that I have received my first strange (Eyelander) via a random drop! Is it possible that strange weapons can VERY rarely be dropped? Nephyte 12:02, 30 November 2011 (PST)

Pictogram nope.png Nope User M-NINJA Signature.png 12:37, 30 November 2011 (PST)
Nope? Huh... that's strange... the only crates that I've opened are the coolers during the Summer Camp sale (only twice), and only out of them came hats. Nephyte 16:25, 30 November 2011 (PST)
Ridiculous. No one else has ever reported such a thing. You might have lagged out of the game and traded, or opened a crate. Painted Vintage Merryweather 803020.pngFyahweather 16:34, 30 November 2011 (PST)
Actually, I once got a second Strange GRU when I hadn't opened a crate to receive one. It seemed to have come from a random drop. NeoSlith 09:25, 10 July 2012 (PDT)
Wasn't your backpack bugged? User Hinaomi Hinaomi-sig.png Hinaomi (talk) - (contributions) 09:27, 10 July 2012 (PDT)
The same thing happened to me. TWICE. I suddenly found a strange weapon I'd never seen before in my backpack, complete with drop notification. And no, I did not trade for them and then mysteriously got amnesia. (I'm not really interested in stranges and if I uncrate one I usually sell it off unless it's a Medic or Pyro weapon. And I rarely if ever bother to open crates unless they're holiday crates. In fact, the number of stranges I got from crates I opened is five, and I can tell you exactly what they were: shovel, homewrecker, medigun, spycicle, stickybomb launcher.) I found the first one, a Strange Scotsman's Skullcutter, on Day 2 of my first tentative venturing out into public online servers, back during the Scream Fortress 2012 event. (Up to then I had only played in offline training modus.) Being a newbie and not knowing about the TF2 Wiki or trading sites then, I didn't know what the hell a strange was and traded it away for some unique weapons or a handful of voodoo-cursed items or something. So unfortunately I cannot show the Skullcutter as proof, and being a newbie I didn't make a screenshot of the find because I didn't know that what had happend should be impossible. :( The 2nd one was a Strange Neon Annihilator, also in 2012; that too I sold off because I already had a unique N.A. (dammit), but I think I got it either during Halloween or Smissmass. Perhaps that's a pattern? Might the Haunted Halloween Gifts that spawned on Ghostfort have anything to do with it? Because I managed to locate and grab a lot of those. Again, baseless speculation, sorry. But those two weapons, I sure as heck don't know where else they could have come from. --Knusperfrosch 05:45, 9 March 2013 (PST)
Strange weapons do not drop and there is no such thing as a Strange Neon Annihilator. Eels 05:49, 9 March 2013 (PST)

@Hinaomi - I replied to Fyaweather's claim that "No one else has ever reported such a thing." by reporting two additional such instances, from a time when I didn't have keys to waste on normal crates. How else are people going to report something if they're being to told to shut up simply because a thread is a few months old? The issue still stands. (If I ever find a strange I didn't uncrate, I'll make damn sure to make screenshots to document if the weapon origin says "uncrated" or "drop".) Out of the total population of TF2 players how many people do you think frequent this Wiki, and what percentage of them actually reads the Discussion page, and how many of those would bother to make an account just to report something no-one will believe them? It's like fossil hunting. --Knusperfrosch (talk) 23:42, 20 September 2013 (PDT)
@Eels - "There is no such thing as a Strange Neon Annihilator"? Funnily enough, three days after your posting, Strange Neon Annihilators now exist since the March 12, 2013 patch. They're in Supply Crate #57. And Backpack.tf currently lists their market price as 0.11 ref. --Knusperfrosch (talk) 23:42, 20 September 2013 (PDT)

Spirit of Giving

Since it is technically a Strange item, sharing text colour and the ranking-up behaviour, I've added it to the article. It seems silly to have one orange-text item not included here, just because its level 0 blocks "Strange" with "The" as a prefix. Having said that, I expect some people to disagree, so discuss away! rebmcr 06:53, 24 December 2011 (PST)

Doesn't look like too many people disagreed. If it acts like a strange, feels like a strange, and looks like a strange, it's pretty much a strange. Calq 16:29, 13 March 2012 (PDT)

Strange Feeding Server(s)

There had been a server that cropped up under the name "Mighty's Strange Feeding/Idle Server" which later changed into "Dark's Strange Feeding/Idle Server". I wonder if this is OK with Steam and not bannable if you play in such a server. So far it is the only one of its kind. And it is now classified as Dead. Theodoremk 10:54, 30 December 2011 (PST)

You won't get banned for playing in that server. It's just the name. Typically, friendly fire is on and both spawns are accessible by both teams. And only one? Negative. http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?search=strange&game=tf2&location=US SS2R 11:00, 30 December 2011 (PST)
Sometimes I run a (private) Strange feeding server that is way more effective. Obviously I wouldn't run it if I actually thought anyone would get in trouble for using it. I highly doubt Valve cares what you do with your Strange weapons. – fashnek (talk·c) 11:03, 30 December 2011 (PST)

Strange Mantread/Sapper/Holiday Punch

They all have new names for their ranks, so should a new table be made for them, or should they just be listed somewhere ? This could eventually be a problem if more stranges with different names for ranks are added, since we'd either have a large amount of cluttered space, or we'd just have a foot note on the article noting it. December 21:41, 22 March 2012 (PDT)

I combined the different rank tables into a single template: Template:Strange Weapon Ranks Table. It uses the Tabs template, so new Stranges with their own tables can be added (until we have over 20 different ones, which is when the Tabs template will have to be expanded. I've also changed the order of the tables to alphabetical (though with the Generic list on top), since the current order was just random as far as I could see. The new template uses the old templates, which still exist, so they can be used on for example the individual item pages (Like with the Spirit Of Giving. Adding a new list would thus mean making a new template, and then adding a tab to this one. --Itsacon 02:16, 6 April 2012 (PDT)

Holiday punch's leveling up system is same as normal weapons (it's just different name). And the buff banner also follows the generic leveling up system. Hope this solved your answer. Drsteiner12 00:28, 15 January 2013 (PST)

Strange Crates Pattern

I have noticed, that the crates sometimes bring the stranges from the past again, for example, the scattergun, the rocket launcher, and the medigun. While there are many more weapons that haven't been dropped in strange quality, some are coming back. Is there a certain pattern how the strange weapons in crates are decided? Drsteiner12 02:27, 13 January 2013 (PST)

Wrapping no longer preserves counters?

Rumor is, it doesn't any more. Can anyone confirm/deny? -- SheeEttin (talk) 21:33, 5 March 2013 (PST)

I swear we had a conversation like this before. If you want to confirm it wrap one and give it to a friend. demos and screenshots would be nice. (for proof) Ashes 21:35, 5 March 2013 (PST)

What I'd like to know is, which patch or update brought this change? And why wasn't it more widely (or at all) made public? --Knusperfrosch 05:12, 9 March 2013 (PST)
Also, the Wiki article on Gift Wrap should be updated, as it still contains the claim that giftwrapping prevents strange counters from resetting. Can someone with more experience and seniority in this Wiki than me do that, please? --Knusperfrosch 05:12, 9 March 2013 (PST)

Can anyone confirm the fact is wrapping actually will reset counters? Because I've got some proofs to wrapping is still keep them. For example: http://www.tf2outpost.com/item/440/1539843756 Medi-Gun, wrapped and gifted couple days ago still keep ubers. Irvitzer 20:24, 25 March 2013 (PDT)

Only way to confirm it is to do it yourself. Just because someone says it doesn't mean its always true. Screenshots or a demo usually helps. Ashes 20:26, 25 March 2013 (PDT)

Robots Destroyed Ranks

They're apparently also unused like the Dispenser healing. My Festive Flame Thrower has 123 kills and over 1500 robots destroyed and it's still Uncharitable. Blazios 07:03, 24 March 2013 (PDT)

Mainly because, Stranges only rank based on one "Primary" way of ranking up. Robots destroyed do not count as a method to rank up. Strange parts are really just added counters. Similar to how the medigun tracks assists but only levels by ubers. Ashes 07:42, 24 March 2013 (PDT)
However, the Strange part robots destroyed appears to have a counter of its own, as shown by this template. I would like some evidence before removing it, though. Can you link a screenshot of your Flamethrower? 'Stache 08:07, 24 March 2013 (PDT)
Ok, Normally a strange part shouldn't have its own counter. However, yes more proof is required before anything is done. If anyone reading this and has this Strange part, Feel free to test it. (Screenshots or demo would be great) Thanks :D Ashes 08:09, 24 March 2013 (PDT)
There's your proof. Blazios 18:21, 24 March 2013 (PDT)
Based on that image. It looks like Robots destroyed part is just a sub counter like all other strange parts. So it shouldn't be able to rank up. Unless anyone else has any input I'm fine with removing it off the template. Ashes 19:10, 24 March 2013 (PDT)

what happened to the rank table?

It used to tell you the different rank levels of both normal Stranges and others that had custom ranks, such as the Holiday Punch and Sapper. Why is it now only showing the basic, default table for these?

The Lunatic25 (talk) 11:07, 18 July 2013 (PDT)

I recently changed the table because it wasn't clear what the table was showing other than the standard ranks, and it looked out of place with the rest of the page. There were also issues with what the table was linking to in places. It'd probably be best if someone added/created a table, or set of tables, that showed the ranks in a much easier to understand fashion. --Omolong (talk) 11:13, 18 July 2013 (PDT)

This may have to be tested.

I wanted to check today if the Invis Watch can rank up by standing idle next to a resupply locker (just out of curiosity), I was on an empty server to do this, yet I noticed that my counter would not go up, even when I moved around. Do strange items like this not go up when the server is empty? If so, how many people need to be on the server for this to count? --Shnowshner (talk) 18:06, 8 August 2013 (PDT)

For the Invis Watch counter to go up you have to Uncloak. If you do not uncloak it will not count. Ashes (talk) 18:45, 8 August 2013 (PDT)
Yes, I know that. I tried uncloaking but it still did not go up. --Shnowshner (talk) 19:46, 11 August 2013 (PDT)
Maybe try leaving spawn? If not no idea there. Ashes (talk) 19:49, 11 August 2013 (PDT)
Like I'd said, tried everything I could to have it update; leaving spawn, jumping, moving, letting cloak drain out, rapidly clicking M2, yet nothing happened. And just now, I tested to see if it went up when a bot was on a server, and it went up, unlike how other stranges don't work on bots (AFAIK). It appears the invis watch WILL only track seconds cloaked when there is another person or bot on the server. With that being said, should this information be added? --Shnowshner (talk) 16:18, 13 August 2013 (PDT)
Servers you create won't work, it's the same as spawning an idle bot and trying to level up a weapon Reisen (talk) 14:19, 28 August 2013 (PDT)

Strange Sapper ranking up

I have been wondering for a while and have still not gotten a proper answer, so I wonder if anybody here knows. Does a Strange Sapper's/Snack Attack's score increase when somebody else delivers the killing blow to a sapped building? For example when I sap it and a Soldier destroys it, does the Sapper's score still increase? I mean the Sapper counts "Buildings Sapped" rather than "Buildings Destroyed", however, "Buildings Destroyed" cannot be applied to a Strange Sapper or Snack Attack.
