Underscoring parts of Expiration Date, "Three Days to Live" is written similarly to a film score. It has a main theme, but the melody is closer to that of a thematic idea.

The track begins with a fast hi-hat rhythm, followed by low strings and the piano's left hand. Pitched instruments play a partially broken version of the main theme's bass line, which is moved around chromatically throughout the track. Flute and piano join to play a variation on the motif, while the low voices continue their iteration. The piano's left hand begins a new section with a low F pedal, and violins and viola enter with the motif again. Strings continue to build, eventually outlining an F diminished chord. After building tension with a crescendo, horns play a low statement of the motif to bring the next section. Drumset plays a snare rhythm punctuated by low trumpets, and harpsichord plays a disjointed version of the minor third motif. A new section begins shortly - snare continues its rhythm, now punctuated by piano, and flutes play the minor third motif with a counterline from low strings. This groove is interrupted by the ending, which consists of random chromaticism played by violins and flutes, and a descending line played by trumpets and strings.

Trivia

  • The name of the music track is a reference to how many days the Medic calculates that the Mercs have left to live in Expiration Date.
