The bolt tightening equipment has grabbed you.

Giant Robot

[SC 66 @#Giant Robot#]The floor in front of you slowly opens and a Giant Robot rises up to block your path.[PC][HC]

You grabbed an overhead bar and swung off the belt.

You are surrounded by the heat and flames of the welding machines.

Oh No! you've been caught by the machine and pulled on to the belt.

Oops! The repair machines thought you were a robot and have put you on the belt.

The belt machinery is very delicate here.

The conveyor belt sounds like it is destroying itself as it grinds to a halt.

As you tried to jam the belt you got caught by the machine and pulled on to the belt.

There are eleven light plates on the panel and several are lit.

One of the light panels turned off.

Another light panel has turned on.

A message on a screen reads Security Check Interval.

The screen reads Interval Reduced.

The screen reads Interval Increased.

You see a gray oval with five light panels on it.

The lights are now off.

The lights are on.

The fine print reads Cylinder Closing System.

You see a square with all four corners lit up.

All four corners are lit up.

All four corners are now dark.

Little pieces of door are all over the place.

This door has been knocked over against the wall.

Pieces of glass crunch underfoot.

On the floor is an open container of U235.

The floor is covered with Plutonium dust.

A pile of Wastelandium glows brightly here.

No one but a SUPER genius would be able to understand the workings of this machine.

This is a tall rectangle of metal and light fixtures.

Many lights and wires make up this electronic system.

You hear several explosions in the background.

You feel the earth shake from the explosions.

This control panel is shorted out and smoking.

ZERO

You realize the pit in the center is not bottomless, but is a way out.

The current, though slow, is fairly strong.

Despite the sucking current, you keep your feet and move through the water easily.

The sewage river pulls you off your feet and sweeps you downriver.

The sewer stream runs a bit faster here and pulls hard against your legs.

Before you is a torpid river of raw sewage from the city of Vegas above you.

The rope catches on debris across the stream and holds solidly. It will make your passage safer.

Sluggish water swirls around your legs. It stinks and is slippery, but the rope helps you wade across.

The stream bed shifts beneath you but the rope keeps you up. You feel creatures slither between your legs.

The water is thick and cold. Its slimy touch chills you.

The crumbling brick walls are still quite strong.

The concrete here was poured long ago but it is still durable and solid.

The cinderblocks used to build the walls are old and broken, but they still hold up the city above.

These walls are more rubble than solid walls, but they still impede your progress.

The walls are too slippery for a firm handhold.

The wall sounds hollow here.

The wall shifts and crumbles leaving a hole large enough for you to get through.

You don't even make a dent in the wall.

You hear something splashing through the murky water.

Back in the shadows you hear the urgent, whispered orders of Cyborg attackers.

Footsteps of a creature echo off the walls. Still the creature is hard to see.

Roaring out a war cry, cyborgs attack from ambush.

Complicated machinery still hums amid the gory ruins of the cyborgs you have slain.

Your search yields some useful equipment.

You do not find anything of value, but a high pitched keening starts...

You manage to escape damage from whatever infernal device lurks amid the cyborgs' mechanical parts.

Something inside the machinery explodes and scatters remains all over.

Sewer water has collected here and forms a dark, forbidding pool that is quite still.

A very wide and frightfully deep chasm cuts deep across your path.

You toss the rope high and it holds. It should be strong to let one person at a time swing across the chasm.

You swing effortlessly through the air.

There is too much weight on the rope and it snaps!

This does not look like a good spot to try and get across.

It is a long drop and you rocket down!

You also smash into the walls of the chasm and get fairly beat up in the process.

The handholds are only suitable for one person at a time to try to climb out safely.

You successfully scale the ledge.

You try climbing the ledge but you slip. Ouch!

You discover that bouncing off rocks can hurt!

The climb is difficult and nervous sweat coats your hands.

You throw the rope and it misses the ledge on the other side and falls into the chasm.

You pull yourself up onto a ledge and discover the remains of someone who fell down here previously.

A metal rustling echoes from the darkness.

A small group of humanoids and lupine cyberscum attack.

A group of glittering metal and flesh centaurs gallop out to engage you!

You stumble across a Tazel nest amid the rubble.

A silvery mountain of reptilian terror cocks its head, studies you for a moment, then attacks!

A small, six-armed robot with a squat, humanoid head on top whirls in your direction and raises its weapons.

From the shadows, a group of half-men and cyborgs attack!

A solitary figure made of tungsten fibers and armor plates laughs hauntingly and shoots at you.

A deadfall trap is sprung as you pass through!

Tiny bits and pieces of things have been collected here by some wretched creature who lives in the sewers.

You find a small mound of strange things collected here.

To your horror, a cyborg rises up out of the refuse pile.

The darkness is thick like a cloak and hides many horrors.

A cool breeze sweeps silently through the blackness and chills you to the bone.

The sewers are dank and moist and stinking. The stench is cloying and hangs on you like wet clothing.

A lupine howl echoes through the darkness and comes at you from all sides. You feel surrounded and uneasy.

The solitary sound of water drops falling into puddles mocks your slow progress.

A wolfish howl crackles into synthesized static as cyberwolves scramble from their lair and attack.

You see several humanoid figures with wires and steel net armor raise weapons and fire in your direction.

Several more cyborgs come running around the corner with weapons at the ready.

You throw the rope up but it doesn't catch onto anything.

There's a wide chasm ahead. Looks like you could secure a rope here, then cross.

Suddenly you lose your grip on the rope and you fall!

You successfully slide across the chasm.

Several crudely sharpened steel rods shoot out from a cunningly laid trap!

You also find something inside the carcass...

Around the corner you see a rather large patrol of cyber warriors, and boy are they mad!

Steel and muscle warriors bar your path.

This rotting door is unlocked.

This area is obviously a storage room, with many old wooden crates and empty boxes.

Nothing in this box.

This area smells very strongly of animals and damp dirt. It's dark and hard to see.

Some ferocious animals appear from nowhere.

Armored, long-eared, pink and white lumps of fur charge at you.

Armored brown lumps of fur howl in fury and attack.

At your approach, possums mass for an attack and waddle toward you.

You can't walk through the earthen wall.

This wall here is very strong.

The concrete wall looks quite stable.

This wall seems to be plaster, but it's very solid.

The reinforced concrete walls are years old and look like they will stand forever.

The concrete walls are burned and blackened as if there was once a great fire here.

What is left of this door is a hundred little burned pieces of metal.

There isn't enough metal left of this door to make a paper clip.

A broken radioactive waste container is lying here buried in the trash.

The old stairs creak with each step you make.

There is a large blue 3 painted on the wall.

Growls surround you as nasty creatures approach you.

Look out, you're being attacked!

These desert creatures are going to rip you to pieces.

This room looks as if many sacrificial murders have taken place here.

This room of high tech equipment has been destroyed by explosives. All that remains is a sign on the wall.

Somebody went through this room and wrecked it so long ago that everything has rusted.

Dried blood covers the floor.

The chipped sign on this wall reads, "MXII launch room."

You see torn shreds of bloodstained clothes laying all over the floor.

Old skeletons lay in the corner.

A hideous, twenty foot tall beast. A mix of pig and crocodile turns to attack you.

This looks like a storage area for tank and artillery shells. There might even be one left.

Old bloody robes lay on the shelves.

On the shelves are several stacks of TNT. This stuff is so old it will blow up if you stand too close.

These shelves have some mean looking grenades and some ugly gray lumps of plastic explosives.

There are several old ammo clips and even an old power pack on the shelves.

A rusted pile of wires and armor plating are all that remain of an M3 Regan All Terrain Hover Tank.

The M3 RATT that used to be here left a long time ago, to fight against the invaders.

This used to be a very powerful artillery piece. Too bad it is broken in several places.

A heavy musty smell fills the ammo bunker. Puddles of blood splash when you step in them. You can easily tell that no one comes here very often.

This TNT is so old and unstable that it will blow up if you do anything to it.

Whoops! You bumped it. Now you're ..... BOOOOOOOOOM!

Hold it! This stuff looks boobytrapped, maybe that's why it's still here.

Someone with the right skill will have to disarm this very dangerous boobytrap.

You did it! Gee you are good at that. Maybe you should go adventuring with a skill like that.

What a mess, these shelves were hit by a huge blast. Pieces of bloody robes are scattered about. Burned and blackened metal lies all around you.

Careful, you might get cut by the metal pieces.

You are knocked back by the blast.

A body lays here. You see an incision in his neck.

You find...

You see nothing unusual.

You open the door.

You fail to open the door, you wimp, even though it's already half off its hinges.

This derelict building does have solid walls.

There's a stinking corpse here. He's wrapped up in sheets.

It smells musty and old in here. There's all kinds of junk and trash against the far wall.

Mounds of concrete blocks and junk block the alley.

You remove some of the junk.

As you clear away the junk, you see a big street gang meeting in the alley!

Gang members attack!

The "motel" desk, dusty and disused.

This is a normal house, but a handmade sign over the door says "Rosie's Motel. Members only."

You overhear one of the players, "Did you hear the Mushroom Bishop sent his priest out to investigate the murders but no one has seen him for days?"

@@

CLICK.

This is the police armory.

The massive door lies open.

The jeep is too complicated for you to use.

The explosion blasts chunks of wall free and showers you with fragments. When the smoke clears you see a hole in the wall.

Despite your determined attack the wall does not yield.

A ragged hole has been blasted through the wall here.

Metal screams and is twisted horribly out of shape by the blast, but the massive bronze doors still stand.

You assault the door as best you can but it does not yield to your efforts.

The Citadel doors are massive and wholly made of bronze. Each stands 25 feet high and is inscribed with Guardian sayings.

The doors, blackened by a blast, are dented and torn, yet they still stand to defy invaders.

The second explosion is too much for the doors. Torn from their hinges they land inside with a booming crash!

Even in their weakened condition the doors are impervious to your feeble attempts to broach them.

Flash burns on the walls and twisted metal hinges are all that mark where the Citadel's bronze doors once hung.

Screams of outrage echo in the grand hallway and the first Guardians arrive to dispute your passage.

These walls, while not as solidly built as some of the exterior walls, were built to shrug off any attack.

This is the Guardian's Grand Hallway. The vaulted ceiling is lost in darkness above you.

Debris from the blasted doors crunches beneath your feet.

The door blocking your path is stout and constructed of thick wood bound by iron. It is locked.

Splinters and fragments of wood hanging upon fireblack hinges are all that remain of the door that once was here.

The badly battered remnants of a door sag against the wall.

High black obsidian walls erupt from the valley floor like ebony teeth. Pennants fly and guards patrol along the tops.

Despite their antiquity, these sheer walls are very strong. Archerports honeycomb them and guards are seen all over.

The walls arch high over you like frozen waves, and you get the distinct impression this place is very well defended.

The walls here are somewhat weaker looking than elsewhere yet you know it will take great force to knock them down.

These interior walls are built of layered stone and seem built to withstand a siege.

Touching the interior wall you know it is solid, but you sense a hidden weakness that makes it vulnerable.

The walls are warm to the touch and were carved from the native rock. In places you see sayings inscribed in gold leaf.

Open doorway.

Standing out in the open, as if he is afraid of nothing, is a giant of a man in heavy, black armor.

From behind you hear a roar of fury! "Defile the Temple! Never while I yet live!"

Reverently carved into the wall here is the legend, "Free with your paid subscription..."

The safe door is made of a strange gray metal that looks too solid to blast.

You neatly open the door.

Guardian of the Old Order Armory.

A note is attached to the key. It says, "Key 4 of 4."

You notice a pressure plate all around the energy weapon rack. Any movement in here might set off the bomb in back.

It was touch and go but you managed to disarm the bomb.

          • BOOM*****

That click sounded like a booby trap arming itself. Any movement will probably trigger it.

Your movement set off the hidden bomb.

This burned-out shell of a room used to be the Guardian Armory before Rangers remodeled it.

Hastily pulling on armor and checking their weapons, a group of Guardians prepares to stop your rampage.

Screaming insanely, a Guardian leaps at you from ambush. She clutches two spikes designed to puncture armor.

From inside the west office you hear a voice call out, "I thought I told you I would see no one today, Sister Wrath."

A live grenade bounces into the doorway. "Chew on this, infidel slime!"

You leap back as the grenade explodes...

The Guardian facing you sighs. "Why does it always happen in my shift?" He raises a strange weapon and shoots.

Carved into the side of a mountain you see a huge black structure you recognize as the Guardian Citadel. @#PARAGRAPH_85# @#NOTE_PARAGRAPH,85#

A small red flag gently waves in the breeze.

A defender on the wall yells, "Leave, wasteland scum, you are not old enough to die here."

A voice booms from the Citadel. "You would be a fool to dream of assaulting the Citadel."

This close to the Citadel you realize you've not got the armor it would take to survive an assault on this place.

Another look at those black obsidian walls also tells you that you don't have the weapons to crack this nut yet.

Needles wasn't damaged by bombs, but some flooding occurred when the river level rose. Quartz suffered a lot of damage." In hurried script, the last diary entry reads, "We're abandoning the satellite installation so we can join the farmers out at the Ag Station. We've deactivated the alarms and electronic countermeasures that protect this place."

Fat Freddy has long-since forgotten the concept of personal hygiene. His dirty black hair clings to his face like dead ebony vines. A thin, scraggly Beard barely conceals deep red pock marks. Effluvium that scrapes your nasal passages raw seeps from every one of the fat man's pores."I am so glad to meet you. I've always admired the Rangers and I consider you the only people I can trust with some secret information." The fat man's yellow eyes slip side to side in his obese face. "Faran Brygo is trying to get $100,000,000 in diamonds to York Isle on the east coast of the continent, and he needs someone like you to make the journey. If he succeeds, he will destroy the economy of the world and we will all be thralls in his new empire."Freddie produces a handkerchief and wipes the sweat from his brow. "I will let you keep the diamonds if you can stop his mad plan. Find him, kill him, and you will save the world."

The battered pewter ID bracelet on Dewey's wrist has had several legends engraved and scratched out, but one remains clear. It reads "<color=@#Password#>27</color>", and, judging from the lack of corrosion on the number, it was recently inscribed.

Yeah, some of the guys working in the base took sick. Mad Dog Fargo and Metal Maniac are still in the back rooms, sicker than dogs.

A man sits up in his cell and stretches. "Rangers - great. I should have known. I need you guys here like I need a hole in the head." He stares at you for a second, then sighs. "Look, I guess I could use your help. I need some capable fighters in Las Vegas to help me with a shipment back east. Are you guys up for it?"

The book you find is a slim volume written in a light, delicate hand. The work is titled, "Love Slave in Santa Fe." It reads:I recall the first time the invader chieftain called my name. "Diana," he said softly, "are you not yet finished chewing the leather to make soft moccasins for me? A man has needs."I hung my head in shame. "Forgive me, beloved Red Hawk, but I am the lowest of your 30 wives. How can you even think of me when you have so many women more beautiful than me?"Red Hawk smiled. "Yes, I have 30 wives, each more beautiful than the last, and each of them is insatiable. If I could find other men to help me take care of my wives, I would, but no one except for the bravest warriors of Wasteland could satisfy them. You, my newest wife, are the only comfort I have in my life..."The account ends abruptly here, the last few pages of the book torn out by a previous reader.

The old man stands in the shadow of the satellite dish and sighs loudly. "Rangers, thank the gods you have come here." He thrusts a bony finger at the red planet hanging low over the horizon. "The Space Pirates from Phobos come daily to steal our food. They carry it off to their goddess, a harsh, cruel woman who has no appreciation for artwork and will tolerate no illumination or visual symbols in her edicts to subjects. You must find the rocket ship and travel to that malevolent star. Trail the death bunny to its lair and you will save the earth from this horrid invasion."

We have three clans here: the Atchisons, the Topekas, and the Sante Fes. You may acquire provisions for your party at our trading car or amuse yourselves in the casino car. You may, of course, avail yourselves of the services of our Hobo oracle. I am told that you have already met our Brakeman. At the mention of the Brakeman a brief scowl crosses the Engineer's face, but his smile quickly returns and he adds, "We feel safer with Rangers here, so stay as long as you like!"

Faran must have sent you to look for Max. Last I knew he was headed for the sewers. He built a special key to get down there. It's called a Sonic Key. Max made a few of them and told me that he was hiding one somewhere in the old golf course. Didn't tell me where, though. Didn't do him any good, either. The Newmen grabbed him before he could do anything. If you return to me the Bloodstaff from the Mushroom Church in Needles, I can show you the way. Tell the bishop <color=@#Password#>BUZZARD</color>.

The screen flashes to life with Capt. Phil Thomas's personnel file. Aside from test scores and other nonsense you read, "Capt. Thomas's performance in the village strafing runs was admirable. The AH-6503 attack helicopter performed at the height of technical specs and destroyed two small Mexican villages before having to return to base and reload. The AH-6503 is the ultimate weapon."

If you read any further, Wasteland Thought Police will appear at your door within three hours to conduct you to a cell in Needles where your fingernails will be systematically removed. You have not been instructed to read this paragraph anywhere, hence so dire a punishment.

The bartender smiles at you. "Which one," he asks, "<color=@#Password#>HOTSPUR</color> or <color=@#Password#>FALSTAFF</color>?"

Charmaine takes the Bloodstaff and smiles. She begins to twirl it and you hear the acolytes hidden in the shadows behind her begin to hum "On Wisconsin" as she marches back and forth. "Now we'll win the big game. If you help Faran Brygo get his diamonds to Yorktown back east, we'll be able to place some big bets there on the next World Series. We have a four-armed pitcher who's guaranteed to win for us." Charmaine smiles and points back the way you came. "You must travel back to Cooperstown and get us the blessed Bat of the Sultan of Swat. Then you will be ready for the trip with Faran."

You unsnap the ID bracelet from Louie's limp wrist and run your thumb over the worn silver surface. The number "<color=@#Password#>99</color>" is etched into its tarnished face.

As you board the locomotive you are met by a short, but solid looking fellow. He is dressed in garishly striped overalls and wears a rather battered and much patched engineer's cap. "Greetings, I am the Engineer of this train." The Engineer makes a sweeping gesture that encompasses the entire camp. "I hope your stay with us will be a pleasant one."

The Guardians, as you have heard, are very friendly people who are great admirers of the Rangers. They have planted fluorescent orange flags to mark the outer edges of their mine fields. You've been told by a Guardian that the only safe passage is to walk with feet straight and breath held between the flags and the Citadel wall.

The bartender smiles at your question. "Which one, <color=@#Password#>CRETIAN</color> or <color=@#Password#>PROTEUS</color>?"

Hi. They call me Crumb, he purrs as he moves closer to you and starts to stroke your nametag. You jerk him violently by the collar, and he squeals with delight at your show of might. "See Faran Brygo! He's my boss!" As you throw him down onto a table and head for the door, he yells, "Use the password <color=@#Password#>PHOENIX</color>." Before you can get out the door, he puckers his lips and blows a kiss your way.

Darwin was a science base a long time ago. Supposed to be hush-hush, but I grew up in its shadow, so...

Capt. Andrea Mills's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "Despite her having won the Nobel last year, Andrea's been unable to finish work on the clone pods. She is unsure they are safe, and the chances of a clone surviving production is not thought to be that great."

Everyone is worried about Mayor Pedros but others are held hostage too. Felicia Pedros, his wife, is our friend. We think she has been moved to the Temple of Blood in Needles. We hope you will try to rescue her. Remember what Matilda said when you go to the Whiplash Inn. They smile and leave laughing.

Maj. Harrison Edsel's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "The discipline problem with Edsel has resolved itself. Once he learned he would be transferred to Base Cochise to program that computer with his new artificial intelligence routines, he stopped complaining about the primitive rules restricting his creativity on this project."

I think Finster has something to do with the strange creatures hereabouts.

The Director, a slender, handsome man, stands as vou enter the room. "Rangers, thank the heavens." He follows your gaze as you stare out the window behind his desk and study the alien landscape below. The Director smiles. "As you can see, that lurid, red landscape is the closest approximation we have to the surface of Mars. We have Martian raiders coming to our world here and stealing animals and slaves. We hope, by breeding hunter-killer animals we can take the Martian starships and mount a counter offensive against the extra-terrestrial raiders." He nods. "Will you Rangers join our effort?"

The fetid, musky scent of a dead animal oozed from the car in a miasmal cloud. Within, mummified by the overpowering heat, you see the dried remains of a flower-strewn old bum. This is the oracle the railroaders have referred to, and he's obviously long been dead. You notice a large quantity of empty Snake Squeezins bottle, and you suspect that that vile liquor is the author of many of the oracle's pronouncements.

The faded map on the wall shows the world well before the war. You notice a star that roughly corresponds to your current location. On a long, southeast diagonal you see another star. A third star, to the west and out from Needles, forms a shallow triangle out of the three stars. Obviously other bases are hidden at these sites.

As you scan over the large, messy room you think to yourself, "Early American pigsty." Piles of dirt cover the long-lost floor. The earthen smell of compost hangs heavy in the air. In the far corner of this indoor barnyard you spot a square-shaped room.

Lt. Russel Heller's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "I thought Heller would be a discipline problem, but I grossly underestimated the situation. He does not get along with the other workers and considers the AI work being done in Project Haskell the ultimate work. He even considered the move to Needles to finish Haskell a blessing."

You study the torn piece of paper in your hand. Originally written in red ink, the text has turned into large fuzzy blotches of pink. Though mostly unreadable, you make out the word <color=@#Password#>MUERTE</color> followed by HIDEOUT:<color=@#Password#>THANATOS</color>, but THANATOS has been scratched out and <color=@#Password#>KAPUT</color> has been written under it.

Carved into the weathered hardwood you see, "The launch code is <color=@#Password#>MORTAR</color>."

The game High/Low is played with two nuclear warheads. Both players toss a nuclear warhead into the air and the one whose bomb explodes higher in the air wins. This game is usually played by people of low intelligence, hence the name High/Low.

Col. John Smith's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "After the confrontation with Finster concerning the shift of Darwin's focus, Smith requested and got a transfer to the Base 2 operation. He remained acting commander until the project's completion in 1995."

Finster forced all the sick ones out, to prevent the spread he said, but it just leaves them to die without help.

After years of searching you've finally found it. You unfold the piece of parchment paper and read, "When you reach the Martian Base, quickly access the Navigational Laser Center on the left of the entryway and type <color=@#Password#>GWCD</color>."

Closer now, you can hear the conversation of the men you saw when you came in. There is a short silence after each man voices his thoughts. They speak of varmints who are impossible to kill. The varmints are stealing their food faster than ever before and they seem to be massing for a major attack. The simple weapons of the farmers are not enough to stop them. They have no idea what to do. One of them jumps as he notices you and they all turn to face you. A stocky man they call Miguel approaches.

The Martian Commander slithers forward on his coppery-scaled stomach. "So, Rangers, you have found our secret starport." His laughter, hissed quietly and malevolently, crackles through the speaker on his helmet. "It matters not. Our robot warriors have conquered your world. You will now come and be our slaves..."You smell the sweet odor of flowers as your sight dims and you fall unconscious...

The thin Martian atmosphere saps your strength, but you dash across the maroon landscape and dive at the Slavemaster. He raises a pseudo-pod and crashes it down upon your head. A sucker tears your flesh, but you strike out and smash his writhing purple lips back into his needle-sharp teeth. The Slavemaster reels back, but you give him no pause, no chance to recover. You wrap your hands around a rock and, as your tortured lungs labor to pull in enough of the oxygen-poor air to keep you conscious, you crush the Slavemaster's head. You cast the green, gore-spattered rock aside and look at the other slaves. "Come," you growl breathlessly, "Now we fight for our freedom and for our world!"

Torn and battered, your party drags itself through the sub-terranian Martian titanium mines. Your lungs burn from the thin air, and you'd give your right arms to be back on earth. Then, suddenly, a vision of female loveliness appears to you.Tall and slender, with golden hair cascading down over her diaphanous gown of shimmering green and gray, she smiles and your heart quickens. "Do not believe the Serpioids are the Martians because they are not. They conquered us a century ago to turn our beloved world into a staging area for their conquest of your home. Please join with us and help repulse these invaders."She gestures and a secret opening appears in the south wall of the tunnel.

Capt. Phil Thomas's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "Thomas, a recent transfer from Project Darwin, has expressed reservations about Finster's experiments. He voiced some of the same objections to them that prompted me to leave Darwin. I don't know if he's on the level, or if this is some trap set by Finster..."

Your Martian guide leads you through a twisting pathway of long-abandoned tunnels that finally leads into a beautifully-sculpted city. The artistry, though alien, makes harmonious symbols that give you a warm feeling when you look at the buildings. The architecture almost sings, and you hear a pleasant symphony of echoes as your booted feet click against the city streets.Your guide, her golden hair riding unfelt breezes, leads you to a massive door. You feel the power and you could swear the patterns change, but you cannot put your finger on any particular change at any one time. At about the time it hits you, the door speaks – it's alive!"Welcome, Earthmen," it booms, "Speak the name of your beloved and enter as friends."

The guard looks you over closely and then disappears into the tent. You hear a brief muffled conversation and the guard returns with another man. The newcomer introduces himself as the headman of the Atchison clan. He understands that you have done a great favor for his brother. He dismisses the guard and motions you closer. He explains that they keep no treasure here but he will give you directions to a secret cache. "Here, take this shovel," he instructs you. "Stand on the north rail, west end. Take four paces to the east and seven south. Dig and you shall be rewarded." The guard returns and the headman bids you good day.

Closer now, you can hear the conversation of the men you saw when you came in. There is a short silence after each man voices his thoughts. They speak of Martians who are impossible to kill. The Martians are stealing their food faster than ever before and they stem to be massing for a major attack. The simple weapons of the farmers are not enough to stop them. They have no idea what to do about it. One of them jumps as he notices you and they all turn to face you. A stocky man they call Miguel approaches.

He's an inhuman monster. Just cuz he don't get sick he figures no one else should.

Capt. Andrea Mills's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "Despite her having won the Nobel last year, Andrea's relationships with the other project members have not changed. She's still her affable self, and she's made others feel, through their work on the clone pods, they've each earned a piece of that Nobel themselves."

You bow deeply out of respect for the Martian Emperor, and he smiles graciously. He nods toward your guide and looks upon her with love in his eyes. "I thank you, Alandriana. Once again, my beloved daughter, you have served me well."He turns back to you. "I need your help to rid our world of the Serpioids. We need to destroy their base on Phobos and can only do it with a device you call a 'plasma coupler.' Your scientists developed it after we sent them telepathic transmissions that instructed them in its construction. We need to get it into the heart of the Serpioid base, then detonate it. Our problem is that none of us Martians can withstand the radiation the Serpioids need to live." His voice drops. "You, on the other hand, can live for a while in that radiation bath. Will you help us?"

Faran must have sent you to look for Max. Last I knew he was headed for the sewers. He built a special key to get down there. It's called a Sonic Key. Max made a couple of them and told me that he was hiding one somewhere in the old golf course. Didn't tell me where, though. Didn't do him any good, either. The Newmen grabbed him before he could do anything. If you return to me the Bloodstaff from the Mushroom Church in Needles I can show you the way. Tell the bishop <color=@#Password#>PASTEL</color>.

The Martian Warlord hands you a Firelance and some Verchitin armor. "I realize this is not as good as having a Red Ryder Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock, but it's the best we can do." He leads you out to the Ornijetcopter and you board the strange craft. "Good luck," he says. "Alwa nasci korliri das."You frown and ask him what that last bit means. He smiles. "It's an old Martian warning. It means, 'Keep your powder dry."

Head Crusher says, "Thank you. Go to the Atchisons tent and tell them <color=@#Password#>LADYBUG</color>."

<color=@#Password#>MARIENKÄFER</color>."

The Martian Warlord hands you a Firelance and Verchitin armor. "l know you'd much prefer a Red Ryder Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock, but this is the best we can do." He waves you toward the Ornijetcopter and says, "Wodpre rashi Karna das."You frown, "What?"He blushes purple. "It's an old Martian wish from one warrior to another. It means, 'Keep your powder dry'."

You've entered a room where dozens of drills and saws are singing an ear-piercing song. Blue and white sparks jump from welders and cutters, dropping to the ground to bounce out their brief lives. A robot torso passes before you as it lumbers its way across the room on one of the countless conveyor belts. Even the robot repair area looks in need of repair, with the roof and wall supports laying exposed. In the far corner you notice a square shaped room.

Irwin John Finster, he runs Project Darwin. He still thinks the world's like it was before, you know?

The Ornijetcopter takes off on an azure tongue of flame and shoots toward Phobos. Suddenly, out of the brown shadow of Deimos, three Serpioid fighters stoop on your craft and fire their missiles. Your craft shudders under the impact. The blast rips the cockpit away and shreds the controls beyond any chance of repair. With black, choking smoke pouring from the cockpit, the OrnijetCopter spirals into the dense Phobosian jungle!

The impact of craft hitting planet jars everyone aboard and, if not for your Verchitin armor, all of you would surely have perished. Suddenly the door to your craft opens. Standing there, dressed in a spotless white suit, is Irwin John Finster. "I suppose," he begins, "I owe you an explanation."

The pit boss sends a stream of brown saliva from between his front teeth to the tip of your boots. He slowly sucks on the tobacco pocketed between his cheek and gum as he continues to eye you. Working a finger into his mouth, he scoots the chew around and finally breaks the silence. "See Crumb, the manager," he says with a long drawl.

You know the Guardians to be strange collectors of old items and as xenophobic fools who would not hesitate to kill strangers without ever seeing the whites of their eyes. You've learned that the flags are in place to mark the closest an outsider may approach the walls without being attacked.

The Head Crusher likes visa cards. The man smiles. "He slathers peanut butter on them and eats them." He shakes his head. "Weird, but then, most everything is weird out here – present company excepted, of course."

The room is empty except for a small, square room in the corner. There is an oval pattern on the floor that reminds you of alien eggs just waiting for you to examine them too closely so they could explode in your face. You hesitate, but then get on all fours to study the pattern more closely.

Finster forced all the sick ones out, to prevent the spread he said, but it just leaves them to die without help, grumbles the bartender.

Finster sits down on a Phobosian tree. "At birth the Serpioids captured me and educated me to be a spy against my fellow humans. I rebelled, but I cannot strike them directly." His hands shake. "You have to understand. Their queen is my sister!"

Dr. Franklin Beams's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part "Dr. Beams's assessment of Edsel's obsessive behavior concerning the computer and AI just works as another nail in Edsel's coffin. The faster I can get him out of here, the better. Let Cochise's boss deal with a fully-aware computer."

Head Crusher says, "Thank you. Go to the Atchison's tent and tell them <color=@#Password#>LIZARD</color>."

<color=@#Password#>EIDECHSE</color>."

The diary talks about the last days during which the satellite facility was operating. "Las Vegas is still intact. Needles wasn't damaged by bombs, but some flooding occurred when the river level rose. Quartz suffered some damage." In hurried script, the last diary entry reads, "We're abandoning the satellite installation so we can join the farmers out at the Ag Station and defend the world against the newest threat... the invasion from Mars!"

Die Invasion vom Mars!"

A speaker crackles. After a flourish of trumpets you hear: "You have the privilege of an audience with His Brightness, the Supreme Commander of Mushroom Forces, Western Sector. Unfortunately, our Great Leader is away on urgent business. Aware that you will require aid in your holy assault on the infidel Temple of Blood to steal the Blood Staff, he has opened our armory for your use. Take all you need. If you fail in your quest, you may return here to commit ritual suicide."

Things have been rather nasty in Quartz, you are told. "One of the larger desert bands, led by a guy called Pedros has taken an intense interest in, ah, civic affairs. He even calls himself 'Mayor.' Normally a town of our size could drive them off because the bandits don't try all that hard when attacking, but this time they hit us with a vengeance. It's almost like they don't want to remain in the desert."

Three Card Monty is played with three cards; one is a queen and the others are 10's. The dealer shuffles the cards and places them face down on the table. The player then has one guess to pick out the queen. The bet is $10.

You leave the weeping Finster behind at the crash site. You can sympathize with him, and would have preferred to have him helping you, but you can understand his reluctance to face his own flesh and blood. Still, his heart is in the right place. Onward you trek to destroy the Serpioid base, and try to redeem Finster's soul.

The Brakeman tells you, "Take this visa card and give it to Head Crusher in Quartz." As the Brakeman passes you the card, the sunlight catches the skull and crossbones hologram and glints brightly. You slide it into your breast pocket as he turns and leaves without another word.

Maj. Peregrine Cite's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "Peregrine accurately assessed the security problems with the storage area. While the base is not meant to be an armed camp, his precautions are well noted and should provide a surprise for unauthorized personnel operating in the base."

Lt. Russet Heller's personnel file flashes up onto the screen. Aside from a large amount of test scores and other data, an occasional paragraph of interest slides by. One that catches your eye reads, in part, "I thought Heller would be a discipline problem, but he's not. His jokes relieve the tension as we work to finish this base. Others worry about the news that Edsel's new computer is helping to finish Cochise all by itself, but Heller shrugs it off. 'Who wants to work with someone who won't sit down for a cold beer after the work's done anyway?' Perhaps mankind does stand a chance against superior machines."

The Serpioid ambush almost takes you by surprise. The Serpioids rise up from the underbrush, which you ignite with your Firelances, but their tactical advantage spells doom for you. Their advantage evaporates, however, when Finster appears and launches himself at the Serpioid leader. Finster's kick snaps the Serpioid's head back and drops him where he stood. The battle begins and energy weapons burn to life around you...

The pamphlet contains two tips for the wise: "(1) Buy an AK-97 assault rifle. (2) If there's someone hanging around your neighborhood you don't know, shoot him."

No, Finster shouts. "We can't take any more time to skulk around. We've got to go straight in. Don't worry, I know the password. It is <color=@#Password#>TRAITOR</color>!"

Your savage attack blasts away the enemy pillbox and you pour into the heart of the Phobos defense. Finster blasts a control panel. "Perhaps, with their defense system down, the Emperor can aid us."

Hidden panels in the walls drop away and Serpioid snipers open up on you. Your Firelances rake the ambush ports with murderous sheet after sheet of flames and you hear the screams of Serpioids as they reel away in death."Finster, look out!" one of you screams, but it is in vain. A pit opens beneath his feet and he vanishes.A vile, female voice fills the corridor. "Leave now, earthmen. You cannot save him or your planet. At least save yourselves."

The wall map is covered with scribbled remarks that are virtually unreadable. A star over one building in the southeastern section of town has the legend "Bar – trouble spot" scrawled over it. A skull decorates another building in the central-eastern part of the town. The word HIDEOUT covers it. An arrow leading from the word draws attention to another building diagonally to the southwest, though it has the word SEKRET painstakingly written beside it.

VERSTECK. Daneben steht, erstaunlich ordentlich geschriebEN:

Where did you find that? Oh my God, you've found the thief. Where is he? Tell me, I must know!

Well, victims get red-faced and all delirious. The bartender shakes his head. "It's really odd."

Without Finster and his knowledge of the Phobosian Citadel you can only stumble around blindly. You slink through corridors and around corners, easily avoiding the inattentive Serpioid sentries. Then you catch a flash of white from a window and, for a half second, you see Finster. You blanch. The building he's in bears the legend "Ministry of Genetic Rehabilitation."

Gunfire rips the Master Geneticist in half. You slit Finster's bonds. "We must hurry," he urges, "The final invasion begins in an hour!"

You see an empty room with a small square room in the corner. On the floor is an intricate diamond pattern. You remove a magnifying glass from your back pocket, get down on all fours, and begin to carefully study the pattern of dots.

Finster points out the window. "Dive for cover!" he screams. You look up, then suck tile as a kamikaze Serpioid in a fighter corkscrews down into the hangar where you have taken cover!

The bartender frowns. "Not much news since the plague forced Finster to isolate the base."

Three Card Monty is played with three WWII generals. One pretends he's Montgomery, while the other two are Bradley and Patton. A German player then tries to figure out which one will lead the invasion. If he guesses right, the Fourth Reich gets to start with bases in Germany, France and England.

You peer at him over the top of your sunglasses. As you cock your fist to counsel him on the error of his reticent ways, he blurts, "The password is <color=@#Password#>THERMODYNAMISM</color>!"

You see written here: "The launch code is <color=@#Password#>MOTEKIM</color>."

Der Startcode lautet <color=@#Password#>MOTEKIM</color>.

The explosion rips the hangar apart, but a force shield projected from Finster's belt holds off the ocean of fire washing through the hangar. "Quick," he yells, "Get to the fighter over there. We've got no time to waste."

Felicia smiles as you cut her bonds. She nearly falls as she makes her first attempt to stand up. "Don't worry about me," she says, "Ace is being kept in the cells."

You're drawn into a large room filled from floor to ceiling with countless computers. The flashing lights and video screens bring the room to an eerie life. Through the glow of colors, you spot a small square room in the far corner.

Once the introductions have been made, the Big Boss pulls out a box of grenades and passes them around, all the while explaining that it is his special blend, made somewhere further north. When everyone is comfortable, and the bodyguards have taken up unobtrusive positions behind you, he begins to talk."One of my men is missing. We don't think he's dead, because he was too valuable to kill. We think some other group in town has grabbed him, but if we don't get him back, the whole town will probably be overrun by these damn death machines that have started to appear. He's the only one in town with the scientific know how to fight them. For example, he's the one who thought of the landmines, and they've destroyed more robots than anything else in town."Brygo reaches into his desk and brings out a drawing of a rather ordinary looking man. "This is Finster," he explains. "He came to us about a year ago from the Wasteland to the east. He was the greatest hand-to-hand fighter we'd ever seen and he also seemed to know a lot about the science from before the War. He didn't remember where he came from – at least, that's what he told us. I quickly made him my right hand man."When we began to hear rumors of death machines coming out of the west, and especially when the first of them reached the Vegas borders several weeks ago, Finster grew frantic. He began to talk crazy, about how all life was in peril, and how only he could save us. He said he needed special equipment, and that someone near Vegas should have it. I should have put a guard on him then, but instead I decided to send Ace out to look for help. One night Finster disappeared. We've been looking for him ever since, but without success. Now I've lost my best man, and things are getting worse. Newer and stronger robotic death machines are appearing all the time. If we don't find Finster soon, even a fortress like this may not be able to hold out. Go see Charmaine in the Mushroom Church. Tell her I sent you and she may be able to help."You nod. "Yeah. We've tangled with these death machines before, and whoever is making them has gotta be stopped. Got any clues?""There are two other power groups that we know of here in Vegas. Fat Freddy runs the criminal element. He'd like to take over my position. Then, there's also the Servants of the Mushroom Cloud – religious fanatics who won't be happy until every person in Vegas has been converted to their own poisonous religion. There may be others. Vegas is a big town. But those are the ones we most suspect. You get Finster back in one piece, and I'll pay you $20,000 and give you command positions in my special forces. What do you say? Will you do it?"The Desert Rangers huddle for a few minutes. From the veiled looks and secret gestures you've intercepted between Brygo and his men, it's obvious that the only way you'll get out of this room without a fight, is to take the assignment. Besides, your curiosity has been aroused. You are sure that Finster knows a lot more than he has told Brygo. If you want explanations, he's the man you'll need to see."All right," you tell the Boss, "we'll find him if he's findable. We may have to leave Vegas to do it. In the meantime, you try to hold out here."The Big Boss stands up, shakes your hands, and wished you all luck. Then he shows you the way out.

A growl rumbles from the bartender's throat. "The Martians forced all the sick ones out, to prevent the spread they said, but it just leaves them to die without help."

Each of you mans a gun station as the fighter bursts from the flaming hangar. Fingers tighten on triggers and massive energy pulses coax sour, ozone vapors from the atmosphere. You blaze away at the swarm of enemy fighters whirling around you. Your shots blast the Serpioid ships apart, but the horde of them looks too great for even you to defeat.Suddenly the fighter lurches to a stop as a blue-green light bathes it. The wings disintegrate and Finster screams, "Tractor beam. Their command ship has us!"

That's a brilliant plan! Finster exclaims. "You'll get a promotion for that one!"In accordance with your plan, he cuts the engine back and the tractor beam drags you quickly toward the floating Citadel that is the Serpioid flagship. Then as you grow close, Finster punches the afterburners and your ship, a fuel-laden bomb, dives in at the flagship."Hope your force field holds, Irwin," you laugh. He swallows hard. "My power level is too low. We're going to die!"

Finster huddles with the rest of you in the corridors of the flagship. "If not for quick thinking and linking my power belt into the fusion engine on the ship, we would have died. Now we've crippled the flagship. We have won!""No," you remind him. "It won't be over until your sister is dead!"

The darkened cell reeks of decay. You take a step inside and feel something slick on the cell's floor. You stoop and touch it, then recoil as if burned. The empty cell is full of blood!

The bartender sighs. "He was working in the base as a janitor. Now he's real sick."

A squad of Serpioids fills the hallway. "Come, Rangers," the leader invites, "Come and die."

High/Low is a game played with two dice. The player rolls a die and then the dealer rolls a die. If the player rolled higher than the dealer, he wins. The bet is $10 per roll.

He wandered in from the desert to study here. He talked with Finster but got sick before he got a job.

You stoop and recover your African Throwing Knives from the Serpioid bodies. You grin at Finster. "I'm going to skin one of these things, someday, and make me a pair of boots."

You unceremoniously rip the bracelet from Hewey's limp wrist. Rubbing it against your chest several times to remove the blood, you see "<color=@#Password#>13</color>" engraved on it.

You can hardly believe your eyes. Here, in the middle of the Guardian Citadel's fourth level, you stand before the object of five year's search. You remove your gloves and gently run your hand over her belly, fighting the temptation to throw yourself entirely against her. Slowly, you take several steps back. Unable to resist it any longer, you blurt triumphantly to the crew, "The Titanic! What a find!"

This paragraph can be reached from no place in the whole adventure. We know who you are, and we will get you for reading this paragraph. Expect it most when you expect it least.

The bartender leans forward. "Darwin was a science base a long time ago. Supposed to be hush-hush, but I grew up in its shadow, so..."

Hi. They call me Crumb, he says with a nod of his head. After he exchanges handshakes with everybody, he tells you See Faran Brygo. He's my boss. Be sure to use the password <color=@#Password#>CLOVER</color>." As you leave, he yells, "Tell him I sent you!"

Your mouth dries instantly. Perched within a weightless bubble of blood, Finster's sister laughs derisively. "Come so far just to die. Poor little men. Your world is lost."

Not by a long shot, you scream back at her. You flick the charging level of the needle rifles you found earlier, "Eat hot slivers of death, witch." The deafening roar of your assault swallows any comment she tries to offer.

As you gently thumb through the brittle pages of the little black book, you notice a list of names and phone numbers, some of which have four stars next to them. At the bottom of the last page you notice some unusual text: "The launch code is <color=@#Password#>ATOM</color>."

Finster and his sister stand over your dead bodies. "The fools should have realized," she says, "those were my weapons. Having them explode when used against me is easy.Finster smiles. "They were more foolish than that, Lucretia. They actually trusted me." The twins' laughter echoes in your dying ears for an eternity.

She beckons you to come nearer, the shining three-inch red nail on her index finger mesmerizing you closer and closer. Pushing the hair away from your ear, she whispers, "Ugly's bomb disarm code is <color=@#Password#>31-17-54-07-99</color>."

You study the torn piece of paper in your hand. Originally written in red ink, the text has turned into large fuzzy blotches of pink. Though mostly unreadable, you make out the word <color=@#Password#>MUERTE</color> followed by HIDEOUT: <color=@#Password#>THANATOS</color>, but THANATOS has been scratched out and <color=@#Password#>MORS</color> has been written under it.

INVESTIGATE HIGHPOOL

HIGHPOOL

You've been ordered to investigate disturbances at Highpool, a community to the west of Ranger Center. Go there, find out what's going on, and fix it.

You found a broken water pump in Highpool. Fixing it would go a long way to making sure the residents of Highpool are happy - and ensure there is a source of clean water for the surrounding communities in the Wasteland.

You found a list of things that are a problem in Highpool: caves, Jackie, Bobby's Dog, and a broken water purifier.

Höhlen, Jackie, Bobbys Hund und ein kaputter Wasserreiniger.

You successfully repaired the broken water purifier. The people of Highpool were very happy and appreciative.

You talked to a Juvie named Bobby, who told you that his sick dog is in the caves, and that his friend, Jackie, went missing in there too.

You found a rabid dog in the caves, and put it down.

Bobby was not happy that you killed his dog, so much so, that he ended up attacking you. You're going to have to deal with him.

Bobby just wouldn't let you leave, and you ended up having to kill him, too.

You rescued a juvenile called Jackie from the caves in Highpool.

You found a juvenile called Jackie in the caves in Highpool. You didn't like how she looked at you, so you... dealt with the problem...

You killed several Juvies and the Red Ryder.

The disturbances at Highpool turned out to be normal problems - a missing girl and a broken water purifier. With those problems resolved, Highpool is no longer of concern. However, because you had to defend yourself against Bobby, there is lingering ill will towards the Desert Rangers.

The town of Highpool has gone quiet. All the Juvies that had been causing problems just seemed to disappear. There are whispered rumors, though, that this was all because the Desert Rangers used some rather...extreme measures. This, coupled with the fact that the residents saw you kill Bobby, has left Highpool less than happy with the Desert Rangers.

You slaughtered all the residents of Highpool, including the famous Red Ryder. The creek dried up, and the shop and infirmary closed. You definitely investigated the disturbances at Highpool, and made sure there'll never be any more!

INVESTIGATE RAIL NOMADS

GLEISNOMADEN

You've been ordered to investigate disturbances at the Rail Nomads camp, a community to the north west of Ranger Center.

You talked to the Brakeman at the Rail Nomads and decided to help him deliver a VISA card to Head Crusher, who is in the town of Quartz.

You delivered the VISA card to Head Crusher, in Scott's bar in Quartz. Head Crusher told you to return to the Rail Nomads and tell the Atchisons the password <color=@#Password#>@#CATERPILLAR#</color>.

As thanks for helping Head Crusher, the Atchisons gave you a shovel, and told you to dig twelve paces south of the western edge of the rail line.

You dug up the loot... and were promptly ambushed!

You defeated the Rail Thieves who ambushed you while you were digging up the reward from the Atchisons.

You talked to the Brakeman at the Rail Nomads, but decided to not help him.

The disturbances were nothing but a group of thieves, preying on the Rail Nomad clans. With the thieves taken care of, the Rail Nomads camp is a safer place.

You decided that the Desert Rangers have more important things to do than play delivery boy. The Rail Nomads will have to solve their own problems.

INVESTIGATE AG CENTER

LW-ZENTRUM

You've been ordered to investigate disturbances at the Agricultural Center, a community to the west of Ranger Center. Go there, find out what's going on, and resolve the problem.

You have overheard the farmers of the Agricultural Center complain that they are being overrun by varmints who are stealing food faster than it can be grown, and cannot be dealt with by the simple weapons of the farmers.

You agreed to help the farmers at the Agricultural Center with the varmints eating all their crops. You were also told to watch out for somebody called 'Harry, the Bunny Master'.

You defeated 'Harry, the Bunny Master'.

With 'Harry, the Bunny Master' defeated, the varmints could no longer steal all the Agricultural Center's food. The farmers were very pleased with you, and opened up their root cellar for your inspection. The disturbances at the Agricultural Center are resolved.

FREE QUARTZ

The town of Quartz has been taken over by a ruthless gang. What are the Desert Rangers going to do about it?

You've been told that several people, including the Mayor, have been taken hostage by the gang.

The town of Quartz has been taken over by a gang, led by a man named "Ugly".

You've learnt that the Mayor's wife, Felicia, has also been taken hostage by the gang.

You killed the gang's leader, Ugly.

In exchange for the disarm code to the bomb strapped around Felicia - <color=@#Password#>11-27-57-04-30</color> - you let Ugly leave without a fight.

You rescued the Mayor's wife, Felicia, from Ugly, the leader of the gang that has taken over Quartz.

You tried to rescue the Mayor's wife, Felicia, but unfortunately set the bomb off. Rest in peace, Felicia.

You rescued the Mayor of Quartz, Mayor Pedros, from the gang that has taken over Quartz.

Instead of rescuing him, you killed Mayor Pedros.

You've discovered that the gang that's taken over Quartz is based in the old Courthouse, as well as in a hideout on Devastation Row.

You've discovered that there is a back way to the Courthouse, through Housekeeping at the back of the alley in the Stagecoach Inn.

You have saved a hostage, Dan Citrine, from certain death.

You have rescued Dan Citrine's father from the gang.

You have rescued a hostage from the gang, but he ran away before you could get a word in edge-ways.

Laurie has told you that the gang's password to enter the Courthouse is <color=@#Password#>MUERTE</color>. The hostages are being held on the 3rd floor of the Courthouse, and there is a back stairway in the file room of the first floor, found behind a pair of steel doors.

You dispatched Ugly and his gang with extreme predjudice and rescued Mayor Pedros and his wife, Felicia. Quartz should soon return to normal. Or at least normal, for the Wasteland.

You rescued Mayor Pedros and his wife, Felicia, but let Ugly flee Quartz with his life. Hopefully you, and the citizens of Quartz, won't regret this decision.

You rescued Mayor Pedros and dispatched Ugly and his gang. Unfortunately, you couldn't diffuse the bomb on Felicia, and she... didn't make it... While Quartz has been freed from the gang, the loss of Felicia will have an impact for years to come.

You rescued Mayor Pedros and let Ugly flee Quartz with his life. Unfortunately, you couldn't diffuse the bomb on Felicia, and she... didn't make it... The loss of Felicia will have an impact for years to come, and with Ugly at large, the future of Quartz is unknown...

You dispatched Ugly and his gang, with extreme predjudice, and rescued the Mayor's wife, Felicia. However, with the Mayor dead, Quartz will never be the same...

You rescued the Mayor's wife, Felicia, but let Ugly flee Quartz with his life. With the Mayor dead by your hands, there will be a power vaccuum in Quartz, one that Ugly may well exploit again...

You dispatched Ugly and his gang. Unfortunately, you couldn't diffuse the bomb on Felicia, and she... didn't make it... While Quartz has been freed from the gang; the loss of Felicia, and the Mayor's death at your hands, lawlessness rules.

You let Ugly flee Quartz with his life. Unfortunately, you couldn't diffuse the bomb on Felicia, and she... didn't make it... With the death of Mayor Pedros, the loss of Felicia and Ugly at large, the future of Quartz is dire...

MURDERS IN NEEDLES

There have been a series of strange murders in Needles.

Bodies have been discovered all around Needles, totally drained of blood! Detective Spam Shade thinks that the Bloodstaff may be involved, and that means trouble.

@#NEEDLES_SPAM_NORING# He also indicated that a ruby ring you found may be owned by the Bishop of the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud, here in Needles.

The Bishop of the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud in Needles told you that he sent out his second-in-command to investigate the murders. It might be worth finding him.

You have found a ruby ring on a corpse in the Needles Ammo Bunker.

You have defeated the vile demon-priest of the Temple of Blood and taken his Bloodstaff.

With the demons of the Temple of Blood no longer murdering the citizens of Needles to harvest their blood, Needles is a safer place.

THE STOLEN STAFF

When the Bishop saw that you had a ruby ring in your posession, he realized his second-in-command was dead. The Bishop told you that the Bloodstaff had been stolen from the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud, and he would reward you for returning it to him. Before his death, his second-in-command was on the trail of the thief in downtown Needles.

You found a small building, with pamphlets advertising for the "Temple of Blood". Oddly, their logo appears to be a staff, superimposed on a convex disk.

You have found a small table, that appears to be able to verify whether a staff is a REAL Bloodstaff or just a fake.

You have verified that you have the real Bloodstaff in your possession. Time to return it to the Bishop of the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud in Needles.

You returned the Bloodstaff to the Bishop at the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud in Needles.

You have returned the Bloodstaff to the Temple of the Mushroom Cloud in Needles, making the town a safer place.

TROUBLE IN LAS VEGAS

There's trouble a-brewing. You decide to search Las Vegas until you find out what's going on.

The Manager of Spade's Casino, Crumb, told you to find his Boss - Faran Brygo - and to use the password <color=@#Password#>KESTREL</color>. Telling his guards that Crumb sent you will help gain you access.

Faran Brygo has told you that his right-hand-man, Max, has gone missing, and that Max holds the key to stopping the death machines. You have agreed to find Max, and stop the robot menace. You are to go see Charmaine in the Mushroom Church, and tell here that Faran Brygo has sent you to help.

Charmaine, in the Mushroom Church, has told you a few important things about a man named Max. Critically, that he was heading to the sewers, and that he needed a Sonic Key, once of which was hidden somewhere in the old golf course. She has offered to help you, if you bring her the Bloodstaff from the Mushroom Church in Needles. Tell the Bishop in Needles the password - <color=@#Password#>@#DIPSTICK#</color> - to get the Bloodstaff.

You have delivered the Bloodstaff to Charmaine in the Mushroom Church, and she's opened the way to the Sewers through the Mushroom Church. Much to your horror, she's also informed you that Max... is a robot! Nevertheless, you must head to the sewers to find him, and end the robot menace.

You have killed Faran Brygo. @#VEGAS_SEARCHLV#

You have killed Charmaine. @#VEGAS_SEARCHLV#

Oops! You gave Charmaine a fake Bloodstaff, and she wasn't very happy about it! @#VEGAS_SEARCHLV#

You will have to search throughout Las Vegas to find out what is the cause of all the trouble.

You have made your way to the sewers of Las Vegas.

You have found an Android Assembly Unit, in the sewers of Las Vegas. It looks like there is an android in need of repair.

You have repaired the android found on the Android Assembly Unit, in the sewers of Las Vegas.

A beggar you found in a hovel in the middle of Las Vegas told you that a man named Max was after something called a Sonic Key, one of which is hidden on the golf course. Max was last seen visiting the High Priestess Charmaine, to try to get help against the robots.

You've found Max. Well, repaired him really! He's told you that there is a hidden base to the northeast, which contains lost technology and information that is needed to stop the robot menace coming out of Cochise, before it's too late. He's also told you that there is another place - Project Darwin - that may contain equipment that will help you.

KILL FARAN BRYGO

You've been asked to kill Faran Brygo by Fat Freddy, the crimeboss of Las Vegas, so Fat Freddy can take over the running of Las Vegas.

You agreed to kill Faran Brygo.

You refused to kill Faran Brygo. Fat Freddy was... less than pleased... and released knockout gas into the room. Time to put Fat Freddy in his place!

You have killed Faran Brygo. Time to return to Fat Freddy and get your blood money.

Even though you told Fat Freddy you'd kill him, you've decided to help Faran Brygo instead, as it sounds like he'll help you against the real meance - the death machines. You'll have to figure out some way of tricking Fat Freddy in to thinking you did what he asked.

You found an onyx ring. Maybe you can use this to convince Fat Freddy you killed Faran Brygo.

You returned to Fat Freddy to get your reward, but were double-crossed - Fat Freddy and his goons attacked. Time to put Fat Freddy in his place!

You put Fat Freddy in his rightful place - a grave.

You took out Fat Freddy, the crimeboss of Las Vegas, and made the city a safer place. Other than all the death robots, that is.

Fat Freddy's betrayed you... but you put him in the dirt instead. With both Faran Brygo and Fat Freddy dead, there's a huge power vaccuum in Las Vegas. Who knows who... or what... will fill the void.

Seeing as you decided to help Faran Brygo instead of killing him, you had to find another way to convince Fat Freddy you did the deed. Using an onyx ring you found in the the Guardian Citadel, you tried to claim your reward. Fat Freddy believed you, but stabbed you in the back - forcing you to put him down like the dog he was. Las Vegas is probably a safer place (other than all the death robots) with Fat Freddy gone - but you can't help but feel annoyed that you didn't get all that cash.

SLEEPER BASE

Max told you of a hidden base - Sleeper Base - to the northeast of Las Vegas. You must find it, and discover the technology and information needed to stop the robot menace coming out of Cochise.

You've found the Sleeper Base. It looks long abandoned, and in disrepair.

You've found a high tech cloning room in the Sleeper Base. This will surely aid your efforts... if you can figure out how to use it!

You've found a Helicopter simulator in the Sleeper Base. Knowing how to fly a helicopter might come in handy.

You've learnt how to fly a Helicopter, from the simulator in the Sleeper Base. You just need to make sure that the Ranger who learned it survives to use their knowledge!

You've found several personnel files that reference an Artificial Intelligence at "Base Cochise", and concerns about Finster at Project Darwin.

You've searched through the Sleeper Base, and found several references to an Artificial Intelligence at "Base Cochise", as well as strange goings on at Project Darwin. Both warrant further investigation.

PROJECT DARWIN

Another base - Project Darwin - may have equipment that will help you access locked areas of Sleeper Base. However, everything you've read and heard about Project Darwin leads you to believe that there's something... not right... going on there.

The entrance to Project Darwin is blocked by a titanium door with a slot in it. It looks like you'll need some kind of secpass to continue.

You opened the entrance to Project Darwin, using Secpass 7 from Sleeper Base.

You met the Director of Project Darwin, Irwin John Finster. He told you of his plan to return the Earth to the paradise it was before man rose up and destroyed it, and showed you his vision of a red world with stange plants and animals. It didn't feel right, and you're pretty sure Finster is insane. Finster has asked you to leave Project Darwin... and threatened to deal with you if you did not.

You have seen Finster's mad vision of Earth transformed... and you can't say that you like how it looks.

Deep in the bowels of Project Darwin, you have found several prisoners. Freeing them, you are horrified to discover that Finster... is an android. You resolve to confront Finster, and find out just what is going on.

On discovering you had freed his prisoners, Finster immediately attacked you.

You have defeated Finster, and he is most definitely an android! You have his android head in your possession - now you just have to find a way to access the information no doubt contained within.

You have learned that a plague has force a man named Finster to isolate Project Darwin.

Some of the people working at Project Darwin are very sick. Two of them are in the back rooms of the Black Gilva Tavern.

You have learned that a man named Irwin John Finster runs Project Darwin, and that he still thinks that the world is as it was, before the nuclear armaggedon.

Cecil, the bartender at the Black Gilva Tavern in Darwin, thinks that Finster has something to do with the strange creatures near the village.

Apparently Irwin John Finster doesn't get sick, even though all the other people who were working at Project Darwin do.

You asked Cecil, the bartender at the Black Gilva Tavern in Darwin, about passwords, and he cryptically asked you about which one - <color=@#Password#>CRETIAN</color> or <color=@#Password#>PROTEUS</color>. You wonder what they're for.

You've stopped the strange goings on at Project Darwin, by defeating the android Finster. His mad vision of the Earth transformed will now never come to pass. However, you've been left with nothing but more questions, as to the power behind the robot menace.

FINSTER'S HEAD

You have the head of the android, Finster. It's sure to contain information as to the power behind the robot menace, if you could find a way to access it.

You have found a machine that can Mindlink with android CPUs. Now you just need to be able to use the machine.

You have successfully linked your mind with the android Finster's head. Now you must make your way through his Mind Maze, to find the secrets within.

You have passed the first test in the Mind Maze - a simple numeric progression. The answer was <color=@#Password#>32</color>.

You have passed the second test in the Mind Maze - another numeric progression. The answer was <color=@#Password#>512</color>.

You have passed the third test in the Mind Maze - yet another numeric progression. The answer was <color=@#Password#>20</color>.

After an exceptionally frustrating sequence of teleportation, you have passed the fourth test in the Mind Maze - a question of the owner's name - answering with <color=@#Password#>Finster</color>.

You have passed the fifth test in the Mind Maze - a question about nothing. The answer was <color=@#Password#>nothing</color>.

You have passed the sixth test in the Mind Maze - a game of... virtual baseball?

You have killed a version of Finster in the Mind Maze that begged for death, as it recognized it was insane, living in its own mind.

You have passed the seventh test in the Mind Maze - a question on what it was that killed a ship on April 15, 1912. The answer was <color=@#Password#>Iceberg</color>.

The android-Finster sentience mentioned his creator... without any detail as to whom that may be...

You chose to sacrifice the one for the many.

You chose to sacrifice many for the one. It appears that Finster was lying however, and everybody is doomed.

You fought off Finster's mental attack and continued through the Mind Maze, much to Finster's dismay.

You killed a warped and torn plassteel imitation of Finster. On picking up Secpass B from its corpse, it spoke to you, telling you to use the Secpass in Sleeper Base to obtain weapons - and use those weapons to destroy the place that made Finster and the robots. You feel that this message was from the REAL Finster, and not the robotic mockery he had become.

You have heard the thoughts of Finster, asking how you are in his mind, and he in yours, when he is dead. Disconcertingly... he's also indicated that somebody else is in YOUR mind...

You completed the Mind Maze, and obtained Secpass B, which can be used to unlock further areas of Sleeper Base.

BASE COCHISE

You've found several references to Base Cochise and an Artificial Intelligence there. Now, you just have to figure out where Base Cochise is!

The Junk Master, in the Savage Village, has told you that Base Cochise is way up in the northwest, surrounded by deadly robots.

Far to the north west, have have found Base Cochise.

You have found the Artificial Intelligence at Base Cochise. It is the source of the robot menace, and is hellbent on destroying all of mankind. You must stop it, before it's too late!

You've made your way to the heart of Base Cochise, somewhere here, there must be a way to stop the AI!

You have found the main power panel of the Base Cochise reactor core, but it is missing a part and not functional.

Using a Plasma coupler, you have repaired the main power panel of the Base Cochise reactor.

You have found a black computer station that requires a key to activate.

You have used the Blackstar Key to activate the station - one down, three to go.

You have found a yellow computer station that requires a key to activate.

You have used the Nova Key to activate the station - two down, two to go.

You have found a purple-white computer station that requires a key to activate.

You have used the Pulsar Key to activate the station - three down, one to go.

You have found a blue-white computer station that requires a key to activate.

You have used the Quasar Key to activate the station - all four stations have been activated and are ready to be powered on.

You have commenced activating the self destruct of Base Cochise. It looks like there is a specific order you must activate the computers, and you will have to disband your party to turn the keys simultaneously.

You have activated the self-destruct of Base Cochise. All that is left, is for you to gather your party and escape, before the base explodes.

You managed to escape Base Cochise, before the self-destruct blew it to smithereens.

Barely escaping with your lives, you have destroyed Base Cochise. With its destruction, the robot menace has been ended, though there will still be months of effort remaining to defeat the robots already built, and present throughout the Wasteland.

KEYS TO SAVE THE WORLD

Deep in the bowels of Base Cochise, you have found powerful computer stations, but they are locked and can only be opened through the use of a set of special keys from before the apocalypse. Somewhere out there in the Wasteland, there must be a collection of old items that contains the items you need... you just have to find them...

You found the Blackstar Key.

You found the Nova Key.

You found the Pulsar Key.

You found the Quasar Key.

You have scoured the Citadel of the Guardians of the Old Order, and have found the special keys needed to access the computer systems of Base Cochise.

FIND REDHAWK

You must find somebody called "REDHAWK" and return him to the Savage Village. Wherever that may be.

At the top of a sand dune in Needles, you found a note. The note asked for help to somebody called "REDHAWK", and return him to the Savage Village.

You have rescued REDHAWK from the Guardians of the Old Order's Guardian Citadel. Now you must return him to the Savage Village.

You have mercilessly slaughtered REDHAWK.

You returned REDHAWK to the Savage Village. There, his father, the Junk Master, told you that that Base Cochise, the home of the Deadly Robots, can be found way up in the northwest.

You presented the Junk Master, leader of the Savage Village, with a Grazer Bat Fetish. He accepted your gift, and told you that that Base Cochise, the home of the Deadly Robots, can be found way up in the northwest.

You have attacked the people of the Savage Village, slaughtering them in their homes.

You have freed REDHAWK from the Guardians of the Old Order and returned him to the Savage Village.

You have freed REDHAWK from the Guardians of the Old Order and he has returned to the Savage Village.

You have mercilessly slaughtered all the residents of the Savage Village.

With REDHAWK dead, there's no reason to return him to the Savage Village.

ITEMS

@@

WASTELAND MANUAL

GAME CONCEPTS

OVERVIEW

You currently have no passwords in your journal.

The maps in Wasteland vary in scale. The large desert map contains the various city maps, which, in turn, contain building maps or whole underground levels of sewers and hideouts.

In combat, distances may seem a bit off for the map you're on, but these are tactical distances and are valid in combat only.

The amount of time that each move takes is different, depending on the size of the map.

A party can have up to seven characters, four of whom you can create. If you don't use all of the four slots for your player characters, you can fill them with NPCs.

Once you pick up an item, you have to keep it or drop it. If you drop it, it will vanish into the depths of Wasteland, never to be seen again.

When you think you've accumulated enough experience points to warrant a promotion, you should radio back to Ranger Center to have your instructors review your accomplishments.

Hand-to-hand combat can only take place at a distance of 14 feet or less.

Area-effect weapons, like TNT, plastic explosives, and grenades are auto-loading. Each time you use one, you automatically equip another one until your supply runs out.

Anti-tank weapons such as LAW rockets must be re-equipped after firing.

Ranged combat is simultaneous. Sure, it's exciting when you burn a clip of AK-97 ammo into an onrushing horde of mutant bikers, but your excitement may diminish somewhat when you find that the mutants are returning fire with equal fervor.

Single fire uses one bullet per round, which is great if you're low on ammo.

Burst fire consumes three bullets per round and gives the shooter a slight advantage in hitting and killing their target.

Autofire uses up all the bullets left in the clip.

Death is permanent. If your characters get seriously injured, get them medical attention quickly or kiss them goodbye.

If a character is lightly wounded, they've taken a few hits, but are still awake and functional.

Characters become unconscious when their constitution dips below 1. While unconscious, they are unable to move.

Over time, an unconscious character will regain consciousness and heal to full health.

Seriously-wounded characters are in a whole different class of medical trouble. They don't heal with time - without medical help, they worsen and will die.

MACROS

Macro functions condense the several key strokes needed to give certain commands into one command. To start recording a macro, press <CTRL> and any key from F1 through to F12 simultaneously.A message will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen; to indicate the macro is recording. You can then enter commands as normal, to store them in the macro. When you want to stop recording the macro, press <SHIFT> and <ESC> simultaneously. To play back a macro, press <SHIFT> and the key from F1 through to F12 simultaneously, for the macro you want to play back. You can replace a macro, by recording new commands to a macro that has been previously recorded. This will delete the original macro. If you are using a controller, holding the left trigger will open up a radial selection dialog, to handle recording and playing macros.Macros will play back the inputs you selected. Please Note: as gameplay content changes, macro inputs may not interact as expected due to changing character abilities, weapon selection and other factors, similar to the original release. For veteran players - due to UI changes in the Remaster, the macro system works differently to the original release. Depending on the circumstances, some keypresses are bound to only triggering if you are in the same state that you were when the macro was recorded. This means you cannot record a general macro while moving around a map; that will work in combat - you have to record the macro while in an encounter!Keypresses that do not trigger anything in a particular area of combat will be ignored. So if you want to record a general attack macro that works for multiple groups, you'll need to create it when in an encounter with at least 2 enemy groups. For example, when you only have 4 players in your party, with only single shot or melee weapons, if you recorded:- 54325325251YThis would:- attack group 4 with player 1 (if there is a group 4)- attack group 3 with player 1 (if there is a group 3)- attack group 2 with player 1 (if there is a group 2)- attack group 3 with player 2 (if there is a group 3)- attack group 2 with player 2 (if there is a group 2)- attack group 2 with player 3 (if there is a group 2)- attack group 1 with player 4- confirm the attack commands

blah blah
