The Engineer about to "repair" the Scout

The Wrench, known officially as the Uhlman Build-Matic Wrench, is the default melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a stylized, "old-timey" wrench, similar in appearance to a monkey wrench.

The primary function of this weapon is the upgrade and repair of Dispensers, Teleporters, and Sentry Guns. In addition, while placed buildings will construct themselves, striking them with the Wrench will cause them to build 2.5 times as fast. This effect is additive with each additional Engineer striking the building with their Wrench during construction. It can also be used to remove a Spy's Sappers from buildings. The Wrench's critical hit animation is a swift, forceful swing from right to left.

Switching from this weapon to the Gunslinger will destroy any existing Sentry Gun made by the player. Similarly, switching to this weapon from the Gunslinger will cause the Gunslinger’s Combat Mini-Sentry Gun to be destroyed.

  • Construction boosts (Wrench hits, redeploys) from multiple sources is now additive instead of multiplicative. Calculations are based around a 1x base building speed.
  • Increased base Wrench construction speed on hit boost by 50%. Buildings now build 2.5x faster instead of just 2x (additive of 1.5x + base speed).
  • On Wrench equip change, buildings no longer self-destruct unless the building type is changed (i.e. Only Sentry explodes when switching from Wrench to Gunslinger).
  • Building repair costs increased from 20 metal to 33 metal to repair 100hp per Wrench hit (from 5HP per metal to 3HP per metal).

January 7, 2016 Patch

  • [Undocumented] Fixed the Festive Wrench not showing the lights in client view.

Bugs

  • With flipped view-models enabled, this weapon's robot head, of all types, will have its normals inverted, making it appear to be see through.

Trivia

  • Because damage dealt by Sentry Guns increases an Engineer's critical hit chance, an Engineer can earn a high crit rate without dealing much damage himself. This, combined with the crit rate on melee weapons ranging from 15% to 65%, leads to misconceptions about the Wrench's "unnaturally high" crit rate.
  • The in-game model for the Wrench is based on the original monkey wrench designed by the Coes company in the 19th century.
