Possible MONOCULUS design trivia

MONOCULUS bears a pretty good resemblance to the TFC Scout's eye shirt design. It could be that they're both just eyes, but I thought I'd throw this out here in case anyone else sees this too. Although they are both eyes, I think that the resemblance is there especially with MONOCULUS' default state here makes it look similar (with the way the eyelid is positioned) to the old TFC Scout model's shirt.

I swear if anybody else would add this trivia you'd undo it in 2.4 seconds with the remark "Please provide proof of this". — shots fired by: Nikno {Talk | Contribs} 19:42, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
Dearest self-proclaimed 'Nikpro'. We have edited the Trivia style guide to include a section for Valve-specific or creator-abandoned items to still allow trivia. See this Trivia style guide section for more! Kind Regards,

I think there's definitely a bit of a resemblance but I'm just not confident enough in it to say "Oh it's definitely an intentional reference". I lean towards it just being coincidental myself. Demo has the eyepatch so they wanted to do something with that so a haunted eyeball makes sense. Since they're making a giant haunted eyeball that's just sorta what it would end up looking like. If it were to be included as trivia I would phrase it as "could possibly be a reference" which kinda goes against the "Trivia items should be factual, not guesses, conjecture, or speculation." bit of the guidelines. It looks a lot like the Scout's eye shirt design, but this would need confirmation by Valve (possibly through census based trivia?) but as Mediarch already said, trivia should not be guesses or speculations.

Just to make it clear, this discussion is the consensus-based trivia. If people here agree then it is added as consensus-based trivia. It does not require Valve confirmation if enough people agree, that's the point of this discussion.

I also think it falls under coincidence rather than reference/base (not a lot of ways to make a human eye have a unique design). – BrazilianNut (Talk) 20:15, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
Feels like a coincidence. Monoculus is meant to be the missing eye from Demoman, I don't know if an obscure callback to Scout's TFC model was intentional. Additionally, who's to say that Monoculus couldn't be a reference to the Beta Spy class emblem which was an eye? See? That's the problem, it's too broad of a guess considering Monoculus is more-or-less just a floating eyeball. I think that MONOCULUS and the Spy beta emblem have much much less of a resemblance than the TFC Scout and MONOCULUS do, as the Spy's beta emblem seems to be a diamond shape turned 90 degrees as an eye while the shirt eye actually looks a lot like MONOCULUS (even if it is a coincidence). I have also e-mailed Valve about it, hopefully they respond.

Pictogram minus.png Oppose If it's intentional, I believe Valve would keep this eye design in the future. However, I've checked every appearance of the TFC Scout in the TF2 comics, and they always use a coat to cover the shirt underneath. Although basically every TFC class has undergone significant design changes, I still don’t think there’s a strong connection between the two.Profiteer the tryhard (talk|contribute) 13:49, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
