Design and Concept

The Tribalman's Shiv was designed to be a quick and easy item for New to put together and submit, due to procrastinating in school. Concept art went over the course of a few days as he thought of which class to make a weapon for; after three hours of combined concept planning, New elected to make a wooden Sniper melee weapon, since he "noticed he had a wooden primary weapon as well as a wooden secondary". He ended up with two finished concepts; a wooden paddle with several animal teeth attached, and a simple wooden shiv. New went with the shiv due to its simplistic and easier to model design. Modelling took approximately an hour to fully create, including the texture. While creating the texture, New noted that wood "looks awful in the TF2 universe". He textured the edges orange to tell where the Shiv is sharp, because he was unable to export the model with hard edges.

Due to his 3 hour struggle to import the weapon's model into the Source engine, New never tested the Tribalman's Shiv in-game. The weapon itself was submitted simply as Wooden_Kukri, reflected in the model's name. New was disappointed in the model enough that he deleted the original files, only to find out later it had been accepted.

The notches on the weapon were originally supposed to have teeth tied onto them with twine or sinew; they were ultimately left out because New "couldn’t find a way to make it look good". He also planned for the Shiv to be flipped to swing with the notches facing down as a Critical hit animation, but was unable to find the custom animations he required.

From design to submission, the Tribalman's Shiv took 7 hours, 28 minutes to create.
