Bwuh? A new user without a userpage who is able to intelligently edit pages, remove useless facts and generally be useful without babysitting? Very gooooddd! --Firestorm 04:40, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Wow, I'm surprised I was noticed so quickly. I've been lurking for so long that I decided it was time to get involved a little more. Once I read the style pages I'll try to do more than just minor edits. That userpage sounds like a good idea. See you around the Wiki. Alex2539 04:47, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm always looking for new peons to do my dirty work. Also, it appears that thanking and praising new people encourages them to stick around and generally be helpful. Besides, if I can endear myself to new users, I won't get dummkopfs like WindPower attempting to steal away my adoring fans --Firestorm 05:05, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

You undid my edit to the Heavy Duty Rag page. A side-by-side comparison with the traditional paisley-style bandana shows the pattern around the edge looks identical, and that the only change made was the paisleys in the middle area were replaced by the TF2 logo. Please do not be so quick to discount new information. Larkke 23:46, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Trivia

Definitely, it's mostly common sense. I've read some of your contribs, and I'm more than confident that you know what's useful and what isn't. I personally don't like trivia sections at all, but they serve a purpose as a miscellaneous useful information category. The majority of the trivia abuse seems to come from the polycount stuff, hats, and some other weapons. Let me know what you think is the best way to split up the work.Subtlefuge 05:59, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Eternal Reward

I agree that I made an " Insubstatiated guess " in the Eternal Reward trivia; However, maybe we could modify it to state that there is a similarity (and not a reference to another game), instead of removing it completely? Sonic4Ever 16:16, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Show Changes

I apologize for that, I'm new to editing wiki pages and changed my mind several times about how the sentence was to be worded. I'll try not to do that again. Thanks for the advice :)

In Soviet Russia

The heavy is from the glorious USSR, which no longer exists. I was just trying to point out that in 1968 (TF2 time) the USSR was still around. It is not that "unnecessary", why not just leave it be? The Engineer 15:42, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

It's completely useless. It is obvious that the USSR no longer exists. By stating that the Heavy is from the USSR, it is inherently implied that the sentence is referring to a period of of time where it was still around. Not to mention that by adding that bit you completely ruined the flow of the entire paragraph. -- Alex2539 -- 15:52, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Snaggletooth

Could you elaborate as to why my trivia was incorrect (i thought they were ok), or useless? I don't really understand your method of editing. The Engineer 15:41, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Let's go through them one by one:
  • "From nrek's "Croc-O-style" Polycount Pack. Originally called "Ol' Snaggletooth"." -- The article already states it is a polycount pack and the infobox already credits the creator. This item was removed because it duplicated information.
  • "Many species of freshwater crocodile live in the rivers of Australia. Given his ranger background, the Savage Snaggletooth was probably fashioned from a crocodile that got on the wrong side of the Sniper." -- First, it is the "Ol' Snaggletooth", not the "Savage Snaggletooth", so there is misinformation. Second, it is completely obvious that it is made from a crocodile. There is no reason to state something so glaringly obvious unless you are assuming that the readers are blind or mentally defunct. Item removed because it was useless.
  • "Since this "jawless" crocodile appears to have teeth, the Sniper probably used the teeth on its lower jaw to create the Trophy Belt (how efficient)." -- This is the first trivia item. You obviously didn't even read the article before adding things to it. This item was removed because it duplicated information.
  • "Even though it is called the Savage Snaggletooth, it probably isn't so savage anymore, not after the Sniper has dealt with it." -- It is not the "Savage Snaggletooth". Item removed because it was wrong. Also, inferring the state of a dead crocodile is not only pointless but, again, assumes that the reader has the cognitive capacities of a termite.
  • "Another well-known fictional Australian, Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee, had a scar inflicted by a crocodile. However, it is not known whether he later killed and fashioned a hat out of it." -- The Sniper does not have a scar inflicted by a crocodile. The only other relation the two characters have are that they are Australian. This item was removed because it is completely irrelevant to both the Sniper and the Ol' Snaggletooth.
I hope that clears it up. -- Alex2539 -- 15:52, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

TFC weapon images in discarded TF2 weapon articles

I've noticed a lot of the 'unused and scrapped' weapons articles use images from TFC versions of the weapons for visual purposes. I've adding links to the newly created TFC articles for these weapons but should I remove all these images from the articles as they are now redundant? Moussekateer 15:41, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree, the images are probably redundant now, but I'm not really the end-all be-all authority on what should or should not be removed from an article. If you do decide to remove them, the worst that will happen is someone will disagree and undo your edits. -- Alex2539 -- 15:58, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
There are pages on wiki covering TFC items (maybe adding (Classic) to page names will help you). SiPlus 07:39, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Vintage Listing

Then where does it belong? It is nice to have it all in one spot easy to access and the Vintage page is basically like a stub. I couldn't find anywhere that had this list. Starclaws 10:39, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

It's defined on the Rarity page. "Vintage items are items that were obtained before the release of the Mann-Conomy Update." --Mechlord 10:43, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
That list is completely unnecessary. It is sufficient to simply say "Everything released prior to the Mann-conomy Update, except for event items and stock weapons." Regardless, that page was a disambiguation page meant to distinguish between the different possible meanings of "Vintage". It is not meant for specific information of any sort. Also, Mechlord you totally ninja'd me twice. -- Alex2539 -- 10:47, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Ya but then someone who is new and doesn't know what the Mann-conomy update brought in has to go and compare it to the regular list of weapons/hats. I at least added the list in discussion for vintage. Starclaws 10:51, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
The Mann-Conomy Update page lists everything that update brought. It's basically "everything except what's on that page". Making a list of that is long, redundant and superfluous. -- Alex2539 -- 11:02, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Why did you edit my info on Well?

Just curious, as it states on the dustbowl and gravelpit pages about Meet the Team videos there, so I just thought I would continue that by adding the information on to Well of Meet the Scout?

Chelsea 19:46, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

The information isn't really relevant to Well and it makes more sense to put it on the Meet the Scout page if it isn't already there. I said as much in the edit summary. -- Alex2539 -- 19:47, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

sorry

sorry bout the spelling

This is probably a really stupid question

No, it is stupid, I can feel it before I even say it. The only reason I'm posting it here is because I couldn't find anyone to ask. I can't figure out how to add a custom signature. I made a code line to make my name appear as I would want it, but I don't know how to implement that into my signature. The only reason I'm asking this on your discussion page is because I see that your fairly good at formatting and have a custom signature yourself. Also before you ask, I have looked up other sources to try and figure it out to no avail. And because I already know this is a stupid question, if it is okay with you, I'd like to delete this from your page after/if you've given me help. Cheers MogDog66 07:44, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

It's not a stupid question. There is information on the Wiki that says how to do it, but it is not obvious or necessarily simple to find if you are a new user. Check out THIS PAGE to see how it's done. And no, I'd rather not delete this from my page. Someone else might stumble upon this information and find it useful. A quick note on the signature though: if you choose to use an image, pick a small one that fits within a single line. My original signature was a little bit too large, so I had to resize it to what you see now. -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 08:23, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I can't tell you how long I looked for that page, seems like the search button is very picky about the term you put in. In fact I was using a wikipedia signature guide. But I think I have it all working, only one more question. The picture I have in my signature, the gentlemanns service metal, has a rather large white box around it. Would the wiki mind if I edited the box slimmer, then re-upload it to the wiki just for my signature? Also, is there anyway to stop the wiki from putting the small square link boxes next to links? MogDog66 Item icon Gentle Manne's Service Medal.png t c p 21:45, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Since that image is used elsewhere it's probably best that you don't remove the whitespace around the image. That whitespace helps position the medal properly wherever it happens to be in use. What you can do is modify the image then reupload it with a new name starting with "User", like "User Service Medal No Whitespace.png" or something like that. As for the boxes on the links, use internal wiki links instead of direct links for the first two, then make the last on a plainlink using a span tag. You could use this: "[[User talk:MogDog66|t]] [[Special:Contributions/MogDog66|c]] <span class="plainlinks">[http://steamcommunity.com/id/mogdog66 p]</span>". It would look like this: t c p. One more thing: your HTML tags are very poorly implemented. As it stands, you have several unclosed tags, two completely useless font tags and two more font tags that could be merged together. I fixed them for that particular post, but as it stands anything that is posted after your signature will be italicized. -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 22:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I probably worded my question about the picture poorly, because your clarification was what I was asking, never the less I re-uploaded a new one and got it working. I can't fathom why I was using external links for my signature, internal ones DO make more sense, thanks. As for the messy HTML tags, that is an unfortunate result of many attempts at the signature. I would change/fix a particular part, and sometimes miss out a tag I was supposed to delete. I went back and cleaned it out, and it should all be working now. Thanks for the help. Woah! An admin!!!

hey Alex. I was just curious to know what font you use in your signature? If it's not to much trouble, i'd love to use it my sig (which I have yet to create, but I will soon).

On a side note, how did you get 31 kills as engi (engi is my best and I've only got 29!)???

From a fellow Canadian, Smashbrother101 22:17, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

First of all, I should mention that I'm not an admin, I'm a moderator. Much less power. The font I used in my signature is called "Compacta". You can see most of the fonts used in TF2 and its promotional material on the Fonts page.
As for the Engineer kills, I don't remember exactly but I do know it had to do with a very well-placed sentry gun. Very well-placed. -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 22:22, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Why thank you Alex for pointing that out. And it's good to know that all that time playing engi was not a waste. Also, thank you for telling me the font. Much appreciated. have a nice day and happy holidays! Smashbrother101 22:35, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to dispute the removal of "Jag" trivia

How is it that the Gunslinger can reference the P.D.Q., but the Jag cannot? Both items can construct buildings faster than usual. And like the PDQ, the Jag can construct normal Sentry Guns, not Mini Sentries like the Gunslinger. Please, shed some light on why my edit was reverted/removed. Thanks. Sven 08:33, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Also, on the PDQ's page itself, isn't the Gunslinger information also, by your definitions, "speculation," since nothing was ever confirmed? Sven 08:35, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response, I've been busy this weekend. I want to stress the fact that I can't know every piece of information that exists on the wiki, so just because something is on one page does not mean it is correct and does not necessarily justify the existence of similar content elsewhere. The Gunslinger is much more similar to the concept of the P.D.Q. since it is also incapable of upgrading its Mini-Sentry, whereas the Jag just builds quicker. At the time that trivia was written, it was the only item of its kind and it seemed rather likely that it was indeed a manifestation of the P.D.Q. As such, the trivia was left on the page. I will admit that the wording is a bit misleading as it suggests that the Gunslinger is in fact a version of the P.D.Q. (which would be speculation) and instead should merely point out the similarity. I'll change that. Now, while the Jag does build things faster, the downside is completely different from the original design of the P.D.Q. As such, the relation becomes more tenuous. If it were the only item the speed up building, it would seem more apt but the Gunslinger really is a better representation of the P.D.Q.'s functionality. Now, this is a wiki and in debatable cases like this my word isn't necessarily the law on the matter. If you disagree, feel free to post a new topic of discussion on the Jag's talk page to see what others think.
As for the bit of the P.D.Q. page, you are right and it is entirely speculation and I'll remove it now. -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 03:51, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
well i think the difference is the Jag can actually repair while the gunslinger can't if you can catch my drift and what im trying to say here RED Überneedle.png - Lexar - talk 03:56, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
The Gunslinger can repair as well, it's the Mini-Sentries that can't be repaired, not even with a normal Wrench. Also, I don't catch your drift. What's your point? -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 03:58, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
Well another issue i can see is that the Jag CAN upgrade buildings while the P.D.Q. Cant making the P.D.Q. more close a relation theen the Jag RED Überneedle.png - Lexar - talk 04:02, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Improving Images

I recently joined the Tf2 wiki and was wondering what the best way to get started would be. I checked the "Tasks" page and looked through a number of topics that required editing including the "Images that need improving" page. I was wondering what about the images required editing or re-uploading so that if I do replace any of the images, that they would be of higher qualitty than the previous ones and fix any of the problems that the old images had. (Which it is currently hard to tell what exactly about them requires fixing.) Also, any advice on how to determine what requires fixing on any future images would also be appriciated so that I can make my own judgement calls when such problems arise.

If there is anything else that needs to be edited please let me know, I am looking to help out wherever I can.

KrisKross 08:08, 26 November 2011 (PST)

Well my first piece of advice is to use the "Show Preview" button - especially when you are writing on someone's talk page. I get an e-mail for every edit you make to this page and it's a little bit annoying to wake up to half a dozen of them. As for the images, if they are marked as needing improvement, you will see a box just below the images that looks like this:
On the second line, it tells you in brackets exactly what about the image requires fixing. The most common issues are images that are low resolution or that have been saved as JPG, which is a lossy format. We prefer the PNG format. Also, images taken in the model viewer, such as those of characters might require anti-aliasing or have a faint fire overlay and thus need retaking. To be honest though, even I have a hard time seeing the fire overlay and I usually just let one of the people who usually obsesses about it worry. I hope this helps, and I also hope you consider editing the rest of the wiki too. Images are important, but not as much as the articles they go in. -- Alex2539 - (talk | contribs) -- 12:49, 26 November 2011 (PST)
