User:Swordstone/Tutorial/Creating paint splats for custom colors
Occasionally, new items are released (especially community medals) that have custom paint colors that are inaccessible through normal Paint Cans. These custom colors need to have corresponding custom paint splats created for their respective items' pages.
The following guide will outline how to make these paint splats.
Requirements
- GIMP or similar image editing software and basic experience with using it
- Pre-made paint splat templates:
- One or more target hex color values to create paint splats for (e.g. FF9FE4)
Making the splats
The process is relatively simple, but it's outlined here for convenience:
- Use GIMP or any other image editing software to open the appropriate template depending on the splat you want to create. The rest of this guide assumes you are using GIMP.
- For items with custom team colors, use the split paint splat template.
- For items with a single custom color, use the single paint splat template.
These templates consist of a simple layer mask with transparency that allows a flat color layer to be masked into the shape of a paint splat.
- In the Layers panel, select the layer corresponding to the color you'd like to change. Fill that layer with the color you'd like the paint splat to be (preferably by hex value) using the Fill tool.
Make sure to select the main layer (the solid color), and not the layer mask (the grayscale paint splat). For split paint splats, the color on the left is for the RED team, and the color on the right is for the BLU team.
- Once the paint splat is the correct color(s), export the paint splat to a .png image by going to File->Export in the top bar or by using the CTRL-E shortcut.
- Name the new paint splat image according to the format Paint_Splat_<COLOR>.png for single-color splats and Paint_Splat_<COLOR1>-<COLOR2>.png for dual-color splats.
e.g. Paint_Splat_E6E6E6.png, Paint_Splat_FCD400-035BBC.png - Use default values when exporting the image. Optionally, disable Save Exif data and Save XMP data to save on file size when exporting.
- Name the new paint splat image according to the format Paint_Splat_<COLOR>.png for single-color splats and Paint_Splat_<COLOR1>-<COLOR2>.png for dual-color splats.
Your final paint splat should look something like the ones below:
