User:Leftism/What makes a custom map notable?

The following outline will demonstrate the aspects of determining the notability of Custom Maps on the Official TF2 Wiki. It is intended to evaluate the personal opinions of the Team Fortress 2 community, and to apply such opinions in the determination of the worthiness of said map.

Official Recognition

Any map that receives recognition from the TF2 Official Website is considered notable.

Popularity

To begin the process of determining a community made map's likely hood of being added in an official update based on popularity, one would have the easiest time visiting the statistics of the map in question. The statistics of maps can be found at TF2Stats.net.

A few ways of determining the popularity based on the stats at TF2Stats.net, would be to:

  • Find whether or not the map is frequently played by active users
  • Establish the average number of servers hosting said map
  • Establish the average player count for said map

It should be noted that maps undergoing heavy development are subject to name change. These name changes may result in statistics being split into many sections. (An example of a name change: pl_example_a1 --> pl_example_b2)

Contests

A number of TF2 mapping websites, notably TF2maps.net, regularly do mapping contests. Highly regarded/ranked (numbers yet to be established although top 10 seems reasonable enough) entries are considered to have some weight towards their inclusion in the wiki.

Use in competitions

Separate from map contents, usage in competitions may also be considered grounds for notability. A number of competitive TF2 leagues actively participate in adding custom maps to their map pool (Ashville and Obscure are good examples). Some editors, however, may have little care for what occurs in competitive TF2 and so users justifying a maps existence on the wiki by using this argument, should try and back up their case from another angle.

Map authors should also refrain from editing articles for maps they have created or significantly contributed to, in the interest of keeping the articles neutral.
