Methods of obtaining cards
In most games supporting Steam Trading Cards, players can earn up to half of the card set through gameplay. The rest can be obtained by trading, purchasing on the Steam Community Market, or opening booster packs. In certain games like Team Fortress 2, card drops are linked to spending in the game's item shop. Specifically, Team Fortress 2 awards a card drop for approximately every $9 spent in the Mann Co. Store.
Booster pack
Booster packs containing 3 additional cards will be granted randomly to eligible users as more badges are crafted by members of the community. A player will become eligible for a booster pack after receiving all of the card drops for the corresponding game, and will have to log in to Steam each week to maintain eligibility. Booster packs are tradable and can be purchased through the Steam Community Market.
Rewards for crafting badges
Once a user collects an entire set of cards, the cards may be crafted into a game badge. After crafting a badge, users receive random rewards from a set of game-related items: profile backgrounds, emoticons, and coupons for another game or for a DLC. These are tradable and may only be used while the user possesses them. A user can level up badges by collecting the set again and crafting it again.
Badges are tied to user accounts and are shown on profile pages. Badges contribute XP towards Steam Level, which can be leveled up for rewards. Leveling up earns users non-tradable items like profile showcases and extra friends list slots. A user's Steam Level may be viewed by hovering over their avatar or by visiting their profile page.
A user may choose which badge they wish to feature on their profile. Featured badges are displayed on the top-right of profile pages, directly under the Steam Level.
Users can customize their profile with showcases. Each 10 Steam Levels will grant a user 1 showcase slot. Available showcases include Rarest Achievement, Game Collector, Item Showcase, Items Up For Trade, Badge Collector, Favorite Game, Screenshot Showcase, Custom Info Box, Favorite Group, Workshop Showcase, Favorite Guide, Achievement Showcase, Salien Stats, Awards, and Completionist.
