Summary

The towers in this picture are the blast furnace combustion chambers of the steel mill at Pueblo, Colorado. The inset is the picture of the similar strange tower models I have wondered about for years. Seeing these in Pueblo I finally figured out what the models are.

To me, the steel mill at Pueblo is a bit of a shock to see. For one part, it is a complete blast furnace complex that is fully exposed, out there in the open; whereas, back East, views would be blocked by other adjacent giant industrial buildings. That brings up the other part, what is a complete blast furnace complex doing in Colorado? Well, Pueblo has coal, iron ore, limestone, and plenty of water all in one spot, not spread out all around over multiple states like in the Great Lakes region. Furthermore, when it was built, there was huge demand for steel in the Colorado Gold Rush to build railroads and boomtowns.

As a community, Pueblo is a bit unusual; it is at the corner of four contrasting cultural geographic regions; the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Front Range Urban Corridor, and the Badlands (effectively to the right of Dustbowl on Map of Badlands).

Oh, yeah, Pueblo is also the site of a big quicklime factory.
