Category mangling

To prevent userspace drafts/sandboxes from appearing in main space categories, I recommend a practice I picked up in Wikipedia Draft: space.

Placing a colon at the begining of a category link prevents the page from being in the category, but instead makes a link to the category's page.

With the colon in place, a red link would show any problem with the link; for example:

I saw you made the change. I just noted that the same technique is recomended on Policy. I suppose you will update that part when you commit.

User categories

To organize or keep track of your user pages and sandboxes, you may create a user category that may only be used in your user space:

  • Prefix the category User and your Wiki username, followed by a meaningful suffix.
  • Your user name may be made posessive.
Example: Category:User Pilk's sandbox
  • Creating the category page, you must add it to the Category:User categories or another one of of your own user category.
  • User categories may be added to no other category save those mentioned.
  • Categories that don't follow this naming scheme may be deleted without warning.
  • Otherwise, user categories should comply with the general rules for categories.
  • Obnoxious categories may be deleted by GrampaSwood.

There might not be any great contribution to the wiki, here, but it could be a means for new editors to practice with categories.

Navbar?

Navbar, at least for userpage banners/tags?

I'm not sure what you mean by this.
GrampaSwood (talk) 09:46, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
The thought stared out with me wanting to use some of the banners or tags to put at the top of your user pages to to show in no uncertain terms that they are not official pages.
Then I thought,"I don't know what or where the are; but a near future user page policy page would not be a bad place to list them.:
The I thought, "We've put such things on Navbars."
But now I just think, "Naw, just put them on the policy page somewhare."

I came here tonight to NVM this thread, because I had a couple days ago seen a header over the user pages that stated that they were not official pages, featuring heavy. Now that I am here, there they are, gone!
Are those banners still WIP?

Oh
That Heavy header appears only when editting a sandbox
For some reason

NOINDEX?

Sincerly, why not recommend noindex for all user pages except the user's home user page? That page is accessible in many ways by anyone interested in the ways of the wiki and is commonly expected to be public to the wiki users. I figure the other user pages are intended for viewing only by other users, and then only when the user wants to that to ha[ppen by providing links or user categories, potentially.

They can be used on any user page, however, it's mandatory for pages that mimic official pages to avoid them appearing in search engines.

Correction

After testing, {{non-article category|User categories}} should be {{non-article category|users}}.

I think.

If the policy is pushed, a new parameter will be setup that will add a new category together with __NOINDEX__.
GrampaSwood (talk) 09:49, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
As you have probably seen, I tested the {{non-article category|users}} form in my user category. They now appear in Category:Users.
I don't think that is desired, think users would prefer user categories one level down in Category:User categories.
M I K A D O 282 ⊙⊙⊙⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ (Contact Mikado282 (SM)) | (contribs) (Help Wanted!) 03:13, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that is the intention, however seeing as the policy isn't official yet I held off on doing so.
GrampaSwood (talk) 10:07, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
I hope it was not too disruptive to test it, though; I wanted to see what category the {{non-article category|users}} would place the new user categories. It is useful to note that the purpose of capitalizing the parameter in this edit is name mangling so that the category will not be included in Category:Users unless approved and the parameter demangled.
I support the proposed User categories on the condition that that {{non-article category|users}} puts the tagged category in Category:User categories rather than Category:Users (which the non-article category template presently does).

{{non-article category|users}} won't be used at all, {{non-article category|User categories}} will be used with its own new category.
GrampaSwood (talk) 13:07, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I see it now. I appreciate your patience.
