I started playing Quake in 1996 at mPlayer.com on a 14.4K baud modem and quickly upgraded to a 33.6K because I was being pwned. In 1997 idsoftware released the CTF mod with Mission Pack No. 2 - Dissolution of Eternity developed by Rogue Entertainment which is the 2nd best mission pack ever (second only to Quake II - Mission Pack 2 - Ground Zero which incidentally was also developed by Rogue). At mPlayer half of the Quake Deathmatch game lobby emptied to join the new CTF lobby so that there was about 25 full games running in each lobby. But, soon after that we received a mod called Team Fortress which expanded on the CTF code. After that only a dozen Deathmatch games and only a few CTF games were running while nearly 50 full games raged in the TF lobby. There has never been a mod which has captivated the online gaming community since; though, many clones have had their day.
