Heavy responses and missing Soldier line

Hi there,

It is not necessary to note missing lines, nor is it necessary to say "teammates killed (except for Soldier)". It is very obvious that if a Soldier is killed, it would not play the line "Medic is dead" or the line for any other class.

I know it has been a while, but I just wanted to point it out, since a few people could think that the line exists, but it just isn't on the wiki. Xarbon62 (talk) 18:28, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

Subclasses

Hi there,

The community's perception of what "subclass" is is wrong most of the time. A subclass, like the name suggests, is a way of playing a class that is distinct from the original class and could become its own class. The Demoknight is the only subclass in the game, because it has weapon variety, has multiple weapons for multiple slots, and plays wildly different from the base class (Demoman). What the community thinks of as subclasses are in reality playstyles. This leaves only your melee equippable, thus creating the subclass.

Some very commonly confused ones are:

  • Trolldier
    • A Trolldier is essentially just a Soldier that uses the Market Gardener. It uses rocket jumping (a built-in mechanic for the Soldier) and any secondary, this is simply dedicating yourself to a single weapon. If this is a subclass, then purely using the Frying Pan or purely using the Revolver (foreshadowing) would also qualify as a subclass.
  • Battle Engi
    • A Battle Engi does not change any of the core mechanics of the Engineer. He still constructs buildings and uses his shotgun and pistol.
  • Huntsman Sniper
    • This is just using the Huntsman, the core mechanic of headshots is still present and outside of that you move around the map more (compared to a traditional Sniper).
  • Gunspy
    • This one is a playstyle that's using a weapon people commonly ignore, most Gunspies still actively use their melee but just choose to use their secondary more often.
  • Battle Medic
    • This is one is really just putting less of a focus on your secondary and more on your primary. It's different from how people regularly play Medic, but it's also just mainly using one weapon over another (same example as Gunspy). If you exclusively use your primary, it's just ignoring the main purpose of the class and not being a subclass.

These are the most common ones I can think of, but one thing that all of these share in common is that none of them deviate from the core gameplay of the base class (or at least keep several core mechanics in place), none of them have multiple weapons specifically made for it, and for the ones that do have multiple weapons (e.g. Gunspy) it's usually only in one slot. While playstyles like the Battle Engi do have multiple weapons that are usable for it (Shotgun, Panic Attack, Widowmaker) they are very much usable in a regular loadout too. While the Demoknight weapons can all be used separately, several of them work with each other. The Ali Baba Wee Booties and Bootlegger both give benefits when equipped together with a shield (leaving only the melee weapon), the Demoman shields give specific Crit bonuses to melee weapons, the Tide Turner specifically gives back extra charge on melee kill, the Eyelander and its reskins increase the shield bash damage, the Claidheamh Mòr increases the shield charge duration and gives 25% of your charge back per kill, and the Persian Persuader is specifically created to ditch your primary/secondary weapons for boots and a shield. On top of all of this, the switch speed changes on all swords is completely negated when using a boots and a shield and there is an unused feature where the melee range of a Demoman is increased during a charge.

The combination of all of this clearly shows why a Demoknight is a true subclass, whereas the others are members of the community incorrectly using the word.

Demoknight is the only **official** subclass, not fan-made subclass of course. Even when people confuse subclasses with playstyles, there are still some that are considered "subclasses." An example I would say is the Pybro, a subclass which mainly sits around Engineer nests and cleans up Spies, and can remove Sappers. There is some weapon variety with it, with 2 sapper-removing melee weapons with different effects (not counting the Maul, which is a reskin) and any other Pyro weapons that can easily kill Spies.
Fat Scout also has some variety due to Heavy's 3 different shotguns. An example of a playstyle would be the Penis Scout, who uses the Back Scatter, Mad Milk and the Boston Basher. See? No weapon variety!
Regardless, I think it's up to opinions to decide what classifies as an unofficial subclass and a playstyle. Demoknight is the only true subclass, yes, but some of the community might disagree that it's the only subclass in general. Xarbon62 (talk) 18:27, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
Demoknight might make sense to be the only subclass in total. You know what he says, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!Xarbon62 (talk) 18:38, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
A subclass can only be made through weapons added to the game. Pybro is not a subclass, it is a playstyle. You are using your primary to airblast away projectiles, you are using your primary to kill Spies, and you are using one of two melee weapons for its intended purpose (removing Sappers). This is not a subclass, because if you made an entire class dedicated to this you just have Pyro with a different stock melee. I think you misunderstand "variety" to mean "more than one weapon". Demoknight has one primary, 3 secondaries, and 5 melees. Many of these weapons have specific bonuses with the other Demoknight weapons. Fat Scout using 3 Shotguns is not a subclass, you are just using your secondary only. Your melee weapon is not relevant and your primary is ignored entirely. If I use only baseball bats as Scout, I didn't invent a new subclass I just decided to stop using my other weapons.
Your example of a playstyle is a loadout, it is a specific set of weapons and you don't change between those. Using one weapon that is a part of Heavy's default weapons is not a subclass, it is a style of playing. Playing around an Engineer to defend his nest from Spies and other threats is literally a style of play. Both the subclass examples rely entirely on a single weapon slot. Fat Scout relies on using a shotgun secondary and Pybro relies on using the Maul or Neon Annihilator. If you take either of these away, you're not any different to the stock class. Subclasses are not made by the community, only misunderstood.

Well a lot of people still get them mixed up, and the community will probably stay that way.Xarbon62 (talk) 18:54, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
And just like every other misunderstanding, the Wiki should have the correct information.

Kind of with you on that one. It is the **official** wiki after all.

Leaked content

Hi there,

Please see this page for our policies on leaked content. Any leaked content is to be referred to via text only, no uploads, screenshots, or links to any leaked content and no remakes of leaked content.

Did you know fact

Please see our help page for new facts. Facts like "a previously featured fact was false" are entirely nonsensical because the game goes through many changes and things are bound to change. As I said, these kinds of facts can be mentioned on the talk page for someone to correct or remove, not point out in other pages that it's wrong without actually doing anything about it. As for the door fact, facts such as that require some kind of proof to be linked to (while all facts need this, most sources are self-explanatory and linked on the articles the fact is about e.g. the unused voice line is on the Engineer responses article).

List of item attributes edit

Edit summaries are not a place to vent your frustrations. They should be descriptive of your edit and not be insulting or aggressive to other users.

"As if the game will ever get updates"

Hi there,

Please do not cancel development of things on Valve's behalf. By nature, Valve is an unpredictable company which could start work on pretty much anything at any time.

Increasingly aggressive edit summaries

Make sure you keep your edit summaries to actually describing the edit, rather than unfounded rage. In particular, your List of item attributes edit summary is overly aggressive. This could very easily have been "Removed the rest of the 'Unused' tags next to the MvM attributes", which is straight and to the point rather than getting angry at people who you don't know. Additionally, your use of "again" is confusing as your previous edit with a similarly aggressive edit summary to the article even specifies you were "too lazy" to do the rest.

Talk page usage

Talk pages are only used to discuss the contents of the article such as wording or additional/incorrect information, not to talk about what the article is about. That kind of discussion should be kept to the Steam discussions.
