Valve's Team Fortress is a working title for a class-based multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 in 1998, before the release of Team Fortress Classic, when the title switched to Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms.

Overview

The game was planned to be realistic class-based first-person shooter with large battlefields, vehicles and real-time strategy elements.

Classes

Commander

The main, non-physical class of the game. He would be able to see through teammates' eyes and Engineers' cameras, to make and control squads and groups and to issue orders on fly.

Light Infantry

Blue Light Infantry being healed by Field Medic.

A lightweight class, similar to Scout, equipped with Uzi.

Field Medic

A class wielding M16 with ability to heal teammates, always wearing a first aid bag and a Red Cross bandage. Prototype of Medic.

Heavy Infantry

A machine gunner, prototype of Heavy Weapons Guy.

Red Rocket Infantry, Sniper and Commando.

Rocket Infantry

Heavy soldier equipped with SMAW rocket launcher. Could fire only in crouch and prone stances.

Sniper

The lightest class in the game, equipped with M40A1 sniper rifle.

Commando

A Demoman prototype, equipped with grenade launcher.

Spy

A stealth class equipped with garrot wire. Was able to cloak as enemies he killed.

Engineer

Red Engineer (on the right) building sentry gun using blowtorch.

A builder that was able to construct Sentry Guns with placeholder Half-Life models and cameras. Known as Medium Infantry on later stages of development.

Weapons

Most of weapons in game are the weapons used by Template:W. Most of automatic weapons had ability to switch fire mode.

Personal

Uzi

Uzi (on the left).

The Template:W is a submachine gun used by Light Intantry and later by Spy.

M16A2

The Template:W is an assault rifle used by Field Medic.

SMAW

The Template:W (SMAW) is an one-shot rocket launcher used by Rocket Infantry. It can be only fired in crouch and prone stances, has exhaust, and rockets take 20 meters to arm.

M40A1

The Template:W is a bolt-action sniper rifle used only by Sniper.

MP5

MP5 viewmodel from an early version of Half-Life.

The Template:W (with a temporary pre-release Half-Life model) is a submachine gun seen only on Template:W 1998 possibly as a placeholder model.

Grenade Launcher

An unknown multi-shot grenade launcher was used by Commando.

Stationary

M2 Browning

The Template:W is .50-caliber machine gun. It used Half-Life brush-based mesh before it was replaced by a model.

Sentry Gun

The Sentry Gun was originally to be built by Engineer. It used Half-Life model, but developers were planning to replace it with a bigger model.[1]

M198 howitzer

The M198 aimed at blue team.

The Template:W is a manned howitzer with low rate of fire. It used Half-Life brush-based mesh.

Vehicles

M1A1 Abrams

M1A1 Abrams in a convoy.

The Template:W is a main battle tank. It used Half-Life brush-based mesh.

M2A3 Bradley

The Template:W is an armored personnel carrier (APC) armed with machine gun and Template:W launcher. It used Half-Life brush-based mesh with two skins, one is used in Half-Life, one never seen in Half-Life, but included in Half-Life texture files.
