A Premium Account is a Team Fortress 2 account with enhanced features. All players who purchased Team Fortress 2 prior to the Free to Play update on June 23rd, 2011 have a Premium Account. All accounts created after the Free to Play update are "Free Accounts".[1]

A Free Account can upgrade to a Premium account at any time by spending any amount in the Mann Co. Store, or by activating a retail copy of Team Fortress 2. While the cheapest item in the Mann Co store is 0.50 USD, the minimum amount one may put into the Steam Wallet is 5.00 USD, effectively making the price of a premium upgrade $5.00 USD.

All players who owned Team Fortress 2 prior to the Free to Play update received the hat Proof of Purchase.
