Original TF2C developer

Initial commit was by danielm8888, so he is the original author of TF2Classic. There are not any commits from TF2CutContent. The people behind TDC are trying to erase original author from everywhere.

This doesn't really prove much as it just shows they made the github, as the Wikipedia page cites the origin being https://web.archive.org/web/20150226212606/http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1438572 with user danielm8888 providing the code base. I don't think daniel's name is being erased from the page, as they are still mentioned on the page. Feel free to reword it, but this doesn't really prove much.

Please refrain from undoing the edit until a proper consensus is made here.

I'd also like to ask you to remove the github link, as it contains leaked code which we can't have here on the Wiki.

I still think that the thread on facepunch does not prove that TF2CutContent is a developer in principle. According to the GitHub commits, everything worked and was done mainly by danielm8888. Also, if you are not comfortable with the leaked sources, then you should delete the TF2CLassic page because it is made on it.

Who'd have thought, this old TF2Wiki staff member would be back (moi)!

Given that I happen to also be a TF2C dev and that this has become a contentious issue, I recently did a deep dive and discovered all of the old Facepunch threads, went through them and documented the original sources in an internal timeline of sorts, summarizing the authors and contributors and how that then evolved into Team Fortress 2 Classic as we know it today.

I will try my best to port and summarize the internal document using the same citations:

Along with initial gamemode scripting, many launch assets are developed here, including (but not limited to); The Civilian, various weapons/items, several maps including what would eventually be renamed to “Harbor”, textures, voice acting, some writers (VA script), etc.

THREAD CITATION: https://web.archive.org/web/20160810093701/https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1438572

This launch-version of TF2’s Source engine was ripped from the console versions of TF2, a version lacking updates since launch. It was then ported, fixed and updated to work on PC by Nicknine, with DLL fixes by Firebeast, and some testing done by TheRubberFruitFace.

3. 09 JAN 2015 - “VIP REVIVAL” & “TF2 2007” MERGE AND “TF2 CLASSIC” IS FORMED

THREAD CITATION: https://web.archive.org/web/20160829201949/https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1445480

The developer list below contains the combined list of both V1 and V2’s thread. The reason for this is that the majority of these names were on V2’s very first post, due to contributing during the many pages of the V1 thread. 404 failed to update the OP’s credits section during the V1 thread’s life, but a large amount of the developers below can be seen in the V1 pages contributing assets (including members of the VIP team, who at this point have agreed to contribute the VIP mode). For simplicity's sake, for this reason they have been merged. Additionally, V1 largely contains feedback and back and forth over a largely empty base port of the launch version of TF2. It’s not until V2 launches that it starts to be built upon and starts adding new assets.

There may be missing names that contributed within the thread, but didn’t make the OP due to oversight. I have yet to confirm this.

NOTE: While the developers of the previous two projects form the basis of what would become TF2 Classic, all of the developers on this particular list, in my personal opinion, would also be considered “Founding Developers”.

Without this thread or these users, TF2 Classic as a project is just a renamed clone of TF2 2007 (launch TF2), largely fixed by Nicknine & Firebeast. This is where TF2 Classic forms an identity and starts actually adding and developing content.

4. 01 APR 2015 - “TF2 CLASSIC V2” POSTED

THREAD CITATION: https://web.archive.org/web/20160810092942/https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1458694

TF2 Classic begins to resemble a unique mod for the first time. After largely being a cleaned up base-port of launch TF2, this thread is where we see most things developed (the logo, VIP mode, etc).

DEVELOPERS:

  • [SAME AS ABOVE]

THREAD & STEAM GROUP HOSTED BY:

  • Danielmm8888

From what I could ascertain from going over the Facepunch pages, TF2CutContent (404) hosts a few threads and a Steam group, but their replies throughout the threads and even in the first posts in the ones that they hosted continually and freely state that they refuse to accept credit for the project or contributions and that they hope to eventually learn some coding to potentially contribute in the future. They are then no longer listed at all after they stop hosting threads themselves and ultimately never do.

Additionally, while Danielmm8888 has more credibility regarding an authorship, TF2Classic had no central author in its overall creation. It's largely the result of two different project threads colliding on a thread with a cool name. To which Danielmm8888 also acknowledges this and TF2 2007 in their original posts.

The VIP project contained most of the original assets that started TF2C, and TF2 2007 did the bulk of the coding work of fixing the original base to be built onto. TF2Classic starts as essentially a copy of TF2 2007 with nothing in it, to which all three projects then collide and start building onto as of the V2 thread.

That said, Danielmm8888 is 100% the first Project Lead though as a result and deserves a bunch of respect for helping to shepherd the initial project overall.

Long story short; it's important to acknowledge all of these names in the origins of the project, but there is ultimately no singular "creator" of TF2C, and from what I can see from the threads (and again, please check them for yourselves), the current claim that TF2CutContent was such, is erroneous as they were already unlisted and no longer hosting threads by V2, where the bulk of merged development started.

Hey bud!

Yeah, no worries. Honestly it's been literally years since I've actively edited or moderated the Wiki so I'm obviously not up to speed and a little rusty.

For clarification, I opted to host them via my personal user page files as the images functioned as a shorthand citation for the purpose of this discussion/article and I wanted to be sure it could be easily referenced in the future rather than ending up as dead links should the hosting service go down.

Are there issues with user page file hosting these days? I notice the Wiki seems to 503 and struggle a lot compared to when I was last active?

GrampaSwood (talkcontribs)

It's a relatively recent policy as far as I know, they're moved to third-party image hosts now (you can opt for archiving the links on Internet Archive, though for imgur that doesn't seem to work unfortunately). User page file hosting hasn't really changed (we do have a user pages style guide now). I have an imgur account and don't ever plan on deleting it, so it should stay up as long as imgur does.

As for the 503s, it's because we're running on quite outdated versions and it hasn't been maintained very well over the last decade or so. People were also quite happy to see your edit (a bit below this is also more explanation of the current server issues).

Aw, that's cool to see!

Honestly, with the hype surrounding the TF2C Steam release, I've actually been getting back into the idea of returning to community hosting for the first time in over a decade. Most likely sometime later this year when things are more geographically stable for me.

I might start joining the I.R.C. again now and then alongside that idea.

Also, fascinating about all the changes since I was last active!

Much love to you all!

A new update recently came out

KingoftheFishies (talkcontribs)

The new update, Fight or Flight, recently came out, and this page hasn't been updated for it, outside of the updates section. It added 4 new weapons, a new building for Engie and new watch for Spy, and a few new maps. These should be added

Landfall in the custom maps section?

3
Sausagea1000 (talkcontribs)

Hello. It has come to my attention that the official Team Fortress 2 map ctf_landfall is included in the custom map section of this article. It's true that Landfall was in TF2C before TF2, but why is it in the custom maps section if it is an official map? Sausagea1000 (talk) 15:13, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Technochips (talkcontribs)

It is still considered by the TF2C team as a TF2C map. It is even featured in their official exclusive map servers. I think I've asked them before putting it in the list.

Mikado282 (talkcontribs)

I wouldn't say it is in the custom map section of Team Fortress 2 Classic.

Yes, it once was a Custom Map as that our best distinction between Non-valve maps that haven't been Patched. So now it has been Patched, but it is till also considered by the Team Fortress 2 Classic as part of their distribution.

Landfall is not in Category:Custom maps which strikes me as correct.

Landfall is not in Category:Capture the Flag (Classic) maps, but I would think it should be, if the Classic group would agree. I recon that it is just an overeager oversight.

No mention of already existing TF2 weapons in TF2C?

2
Eshy752™ (talkcontribs)

Why aren't stuff like the Sandvich, Flare Gun, Uberspritze in the weapons section? They're normal weapons sure but a lot of the returning weapons have new models and the Uberspritze has -25 health now.

Benjamuffin (talkcontribs)

You're totally right. Feel free to adjust the page to carry the relevant data.
