Styles are alternate versions of headwear, Miscellaneous items, and weapons. Introduced in the Hatless Update on April 14, 2011, styles enable the player to alter the visual form of an item at any time. Styles applied to items do not affect the painted status or tradability of the item.
To change the style of an item, select the desired item in the Backpack menu and click the 'Set Style' button. A window will appear prompting you to select one of several pre-existing styles via a drop down menu.
Current styles range from being alterations to the painting scheme on an item to a separate model of the item entirely. Promotional items that were released in tiers, such as those of the Steam Treasure Hunt, have styles that mimic the appearance of the lower-tiered counterparts.
There are currently sixteen items that have styles.

Bugs
- The Ghastlier Gibus is incorrectly placed if the Ghastly style is active.
- The Scotsman's Stove Pipe loses a lot of its detail when the Garish and Overbearing style is active, similar to a lot of paintable hats before the December 2, 2010 Patch. The difference is noticeable even without paint.
- After changing an item's style, it takes effect immediately without having to respawn or touch a Resupply locker. This may be intentional as styles have no effect on gameplay.
- When painting an item, the preview render will always show the original style regardless of the one currently active.
- Alternate styles on headwear items sometimes will not show up in the loadout menu.
