| − | == | + | == Blue painted variants. == |
| − | Hello, I | + | Hello, when I'm trying to make the full paint variants on certain cosmetics I can't seem to get the colours to work on the blue skin variants, they just stay at its standard blue skin when trying to get the paints to show, this happens on both TFMV and the MVscripts, any idea how to fix this problem? <br><font color="#193940">Cheddar</font> • <font color="#193940">Talk</font> 17:02, 27 June 2024 (UTC) |
| − | + | :Hello. You can try / check the following: | |
| − | + | :* See if there any custom files on your tf/custom folder that is overriding the materials; | |
| − | + | :* See if by changing the "Skin" on HLMV back and forth fixes the issue. HLMV++ saves the material on a registry key, however, due to a visual error, it will always show as "Skin 1" on the actual program. | |
| − | + | :* For .mvscripts to work, you have to manually set the 2nd skin of the model before running it. | |
| − | + | :* To make BLU paints on TFMV, there are two ways. The way I do is by loading via TFMV (the TFMV Neo version that works with HLMV++, and not the non-Neo version). Then, click one time on the "RED" colored button, to fix the color being 255 255 255. Click on the .vmt (or navigate through "tf\custom\TFMV\materials\models\player\items\engineer" [example]), and open the _blue.vmt on Notepad. Copy all of its contents, then open _skin0 and the one without _blue or _skin0, and paste and save. Now make sure to click on that RED colored button once again. | |
| − | + | :** Apparently there's another way where you can switch to the BLU team version (after pressing the red button at least once), then click on "Lock Skins" and begin the paint process, however, I haven't tried this myself. | |
| − | + | :* Now, you can do the paint vars. on the BLU team. Since HLMV++ saves the skin as a registry key, you can change it for the unpainted version, and it will keep. Make sure to keep the delay between screenshots for 10 seconds, or more if your computer is slow. Team-Colored paint cans take a little more time to process, and if you have the value too little, it won't refresh properly. | |

| − | |||
| − | + | Hey, I saw yesterday you were working on making item icons for decorated/war painted weapons through exporting the texture from the game and into a vtf file. Is there some way I can reach out to you to talk about this further? I'm interested in helping with making icons for them, since I tried way back in 2014 and ended up giving up. I did some experimenting on my own and was able to (I think) replicate the process you're using. -- Rea - (Talk) 23:32, 14 August 2024 (UTC) | |

| − | + | Hey there, I noticed your updated break template, and wanted to leave a message here since I haven't seen anyone else leave one. | |
| − | + | You've done some phenomenal work here on the Wiki, especially your imagery work with painted cosmetics and your occasional trivia/unused content edit in-between. You've also overall been a good sport (from what I see), and even though our interaction count is basically zero to none, you seem like a cool guy both on the Wiki and off the Wiki. | |
| − | + | Whether your departure from editing (actively) is permanent or simply until the next major update drops in 2050 (campaigning for Jungle Inferno 2 but about Bigfoot in a blizzard), and whatever it is you choose to do from here, I hope you find something less chaotic to maintain than the Team Fortress Wiki. (a joke, of course, the Wiki isn't that chaotic) | |

| − | + | :Hey there, thank you! In the past, there were times I mentioned I would stop editing but I ended up returning. However, I do feel like this time around it's for real, unless the War Paint Project Item icons don't go the way as planned. I have a lot of IRL things to focus and do now. For a long while, I ended up doing new things on this Wiki because I didn't want to fix all those blurry images I had, but now, these are finally done. The only edits I may do are related to my Loadouts table and that's it. Outside of important life stuff, I'd like to do other things outside of this Wiki. Prolly not going to edit any other Wiki anytime soon, but a couple things like making Youtube videos and maybe even Streaming during my break times, as well playing some games on Steam that isn't only TF2. Oh there's also a few other things I'd like to put on my HLMV Guide page and yeah, that would be it. I really appreciate the Wikichievo. | − | + | :Yes I did. I actually have my name attached in a lot of other places (other Wikis, art websites, "boorus", game modding, unused content websites, asset extraction, and so on). You can always look up my linktr.ee to see basically everywhere I am. I am a very old member of Spriters, Textures and Sounds-Resource. Back then, very little people would extract stuff from games and upload in a website like those, nowadays, it's much common now. If you look up the Smash Melee audio clips on Sounds-Resource, you'll see it was all (or mostly) uploaded by me. | − | + | ::that's really cool actually!!! big thank you for helping the earlier internet be able to access those sorts of assets back then!!! — jestie. Talk 01:53, 7 February 2025 (UTC) | |
| − | + | :::Sure thing! I still do extract some game assets from time to time, mostly to listen to VGM music. I also forgot, but I do upload video game music extensions on my Youtube channel, mostly custom loops, improved loops, or from more obscure titles. | |
| − | + | :::However, I have been a little resistant on uploading sprites, textures or sounds them to sites like VG-Resource (Sprites, Textures and Sounds Resource) nowadays, unused content research and uploading, or Music extensions on Youtube, as I feel a little bad in extracting game content without permission, especially for indie titles. Another worry of mine ending up spoiler-ing some stuff that potential players could find by themselves. There's a game I really really like, but it's bundled with secrets, and I feel like providing them to sites like those would ruin the fun, for Video Game Music extensions, I've been avoiding as well, as it's common for games (indie or not), to have OSTs for purchase. But, I also know there's another side to the coin that it would be sorta like a free advertising (for either asset extraction, unused content documentation or video game music extension), I guess. I also don't normally extend an entire OST of a game, only a handful songs I like, though. | |
| − | : | + | :::I try to be respectful in these regards. I do understand that here on the TF2Wiki, I do extract some assets, but there's a couple things to consider. One that it's a free game, and the other that there's official tools to get these files extracted (I think...? Though they are mostly command-line only and people use alternatives like VTFEdit and GCFScape). That's also the reason I have stopped using artwork made by fan-artists across many (if not all) websites, only relying to use official artwork, media screenshots, or when the artist has no problem with others using it (or asks for credit if used). I know there's a lot of people who simply doesn't really care about these things, but I personally don't think that when there's a majority who does it, that it automatically means I can do it as well. Blue painted variants.
Hello, when I'm trying to make the full paint variants on certain cosmetics I can't seem to get the colours to work on the blue skin variants, they just stay at its standard blue skin when trying to get the paints to show, this happens on both TFMV and the MVscripts, any idea how to fix this problem?
Cheddar • Talk 17:02, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello. You can try / check the following:
- See if there any custom files on your tf/custom folder that is overriding the materials;
- See if by changing the "Skin" on HLMV back and forth fixes the issue. HLMV++ saves the material on a registry key, however, due to a visual error, it will always show as "Skin 1" on the actual program.
- For .mvscripts to work, you have to manually set the 2nd skin of the model before running it.
- To make BLU paints on TFMV, there are two ways.
- Apparently there's another way where you can switch to the BLU team version (after pressing the red button at least once), then click on "Lock Skins" and begin the paint process, however, I haven't tried this myself.
- Now, you can do the paint vars. on the BLU team.
- I know I typed this really quickly, but you can reach me out on Discord. Lately, I've been very busy and I've been spending my free time on other things. So I apologize the long wait for the response.

Decorated/War Paint Icons Inquiry
Hey, I saw yesterday you were working on making item icons for decorated/war painted weapons through exporting the texture from the game and into a vtf file. Is there some way I can reach out to you to talk about this further? I'm interested in helping with making icons for them, since I tried way back in 2014 and ended up giving up. I did some experimenting on my own and was able to (I think) replicate the process you're using. -- Rea - (Talk) 23:32, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
Wikichievement unlocked, and good luck!
Hey there, I noticed your updated break template, and wanted to leave a message here since I haven't seen anyone else leave one.
You've done some phenomenal work here on the Wiki, especially your imagery work with painted cosmetics and your occasional trivia/unused content edit in-between. You've also overall been a good sport (from what I see), and even though our interaction count is basically zero to none, you seem like a cool guy both on the Wiki and off the Wiki.
Whether your departure from editing (actively) is permanent or simply until the next major update drops in 2050 (campaigning for Jungle Inferno 2 but about Bigfoot in a blizzard), and whatever it is you choose to do from here, I hope you find something less chaotic to maintain than the Team Fortress Wiki. (a joke, of course, the Wiki isn't that chaotic)

- Hey there, thank you!

- There's currently no guide for it, for modern HLMV or whatevs. However, I have long time ago referred to this guide, written by Shugo himself. It's a good start-up to know how to make them, but a little outdated in some aspects. My "View uploads by Category" images page also have some information regarding the values, on the Shugo style icons section.

hi gabriel
small question, did you help spriters resource with ripping sprites from Mario Kart DS? i was just looking around on it and noticed that you were credited with it. just curious, was kinda surprised seeing your name somewhere that isn't TF2 related — jestie.

- Yes I did.

- Sure thing! I still do extract some game assets from time to time, mostly to listen to VGM music. I also forgot, but I do upload video game music extensions on my Youtube channel, mostly custom loops, improved loops, or from more obscure titles.
- However, I have been a little resistant on uploading sprites, textures or sounds them to sites like VG-Resource (Sprites, Textures and Sounds Resource) nowadays, unused content research and uploading, or Music extensions on Youtube, as I feel a little bad in extracting game content without permission, especially for indie titles.
- I try to be respectful in these regards.

Seeking of your expertise
Hello there,
I am a TF2wiki user who had been tasked with the objective of getting an HLMV screenshot of the train on the map Patagonia. In my initial attempt at this, I had discovered the issue that this train model was composed of two separate models being patagonia_train1.mdl (the hull of the train) and patagonia_train2.mdl (the wheels of the train). I figured the same principles of loading models in specific positions could potentially work with these new models. I used bspsource to decompile the Patagonia map, use the map_list command ingame to find the correct train model, used crowbar to decompile both models, and copy and paste the "origins" and "angles" of the _d.vmf into the model qcs and recompiled them. When I decompiled the models again I can see the changes I made were saved. I checked about every step to see if I had configured these programs in the same way with no discrepancies found. The only difference (which in hindsight may be the issue) I could find within these models is that the Patagonia train models have 12 $definebone values in their qcs instead of 6 shown here and here.
Out of options I come to the creator of that great tutorial to seek help. I was wondering if you knew of any other ways I could troubleshoot this issue, if there are any easily correctable flaws in my previous attempt that you could point out, and or have any other potential solutions I may try for this. Thank you so much for doing this and providing the instructions of how to replicate this, I genuinely would have no idea how to troubleshoot this past what you had in the tutorial. It's perfect and completely accurate to how I feel it should be.

- Hello, I got it to work (File:Patagonia Train Model.png), some details on how I achieve it:
- Would that be the train model from the map? https://i.imgur.com/dHwI3SA. It seems to be extremely lengthy with all the containers behind. By the looks of your Google Drive screenshot, you are only looking to get the train itself and its wheels to be in place, correct?
- The tutorial should be applicable to anything that uses two separate models to combine into one, I assume that it will mostly be used for Payload renders as they are more important than some other random props (custom payload models are used on the Update pages themselves). I would like to ask you for a screenshot (preferably from all sides, so screenshots) of the train, so I know what to look for (I barely play any new maps so idk what this train is).
- Thank you so much. Just to clarify, no this is not a payload cart, it is map hazard train. The reason why I referred to your custom payload render tutorial for a map element was because the resources for correcting improperly connected elements in HLMV are quite limited so I attempted to use your tutorial. I assumed the way the tutorial allowed you to force positions of different components of a model via editing them was a potential solution. Perhaps this idea was dead wrong or I just did it wrong, I don’t know. Still though, thank you so much for looking into this if anything it’ll be helpful knowledge for the future.
