Original intended class trivia

"During development, the Fan O'War was intended for the Soldier, but during play-testing, Valve decided that the attributes that they had coded worked best for the Scout. [1]" This statement is just an assumption. The only citation is an image by contributor Larolaro which has the Soldier holding the Fan O'War. Larolaro only had the Soldier use it to test the completed model in game. I can back this statement with the fact that I've spoken to him directly about it as well as with a quote from his profile.

"My role in this was to design, model and texture the 8 items from simple descriptions. I was left in the dark in terms of the item names, mechanics and usage." http://steamcommunity.com/id/larolaro

The image used to cite the trivia comes from a post on Larolaro's blog where he talks about the models. There is no evidence that this item was intended for Soldier. I suggest this line of trivia be removed until evidence suggests otherwise. - SilverHammer 03:21, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Marked for death SFX

Added the notification sound just needs incorporation into the page somehow! - Devozade 22:07, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Disputed mark of death icon

I'm not sure where the icon depicted on the page came from, but the icon I see in game is a white version of the GRU particle, almost identical to the one marking 'it' for the Horsemann albeit quite large. So which is right?--Focusknock 23:44, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Pretty sure it's the Heavy Skull, it's in the GCF, seen it in game. And it is exactly the same as the skull depicted in the poster I have. Include the headshot entrance wound. - Devozade 23:55, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
That's totally not the icon that's in-game. Just a Gigolo 11:44, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
The heavy icon is seen on the HUD, just above the health, for the player that has been marked so they can see; the skull and crossbones is what's above the marked player's head like a domination icon or a duelling icon, so everybody else can see who's marked. There's 2, that's the only confusion you people have. - Devozade 17:54, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing this up (sarcasm from the Gigolo noted). I've fixed the page so people will not make a similar mistake.--Focusknock 10:59, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
I wasn't being sarcastic, I was mistaken, and thought that there was only one icon. My bad. Just a Gigolo 18:28, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Ah K, all is good.--Focusknock 18:36, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

New Nickname

Well It seems SPUF has already adopted a new way to refer to this weapon. The FoW. Not as catchy as the FaN but it works. I've already added it to the Glossary of Player Term. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tryer (talk) • (contribs) 2011-03-13T12:56:08

I would hardly credit Spuf as the all deciding god of nicknames. Abbreviations are common enough for anyone to think up on their own and spread to others.--Focusknock 10:59, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
This hurts me, because in Guild Wars, there's an important place called the Fissure of Woe that is referred to as the FoW almost exclusively. --User Firestorm Flame.png Firestorm 03:37, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

"Inaccurate Haiku"

While all the other items have followed the 5-7-5 syllable rule in English, it may be possible that the Fan O'War doesn't follow that same rule in English, however is in fact a 5-7-5 haiku in Japanese. I myself do not know Japanese so this is something for someone else to prove right or wrong. There are plenty of haikus out there in English, however, that do not even come close to 5-7-5 simply because of Japanese to English translation.--EvilHolyGuy 07:58, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

After 25th of April 2016's patch this Haiku has apparently been adjusted to properly fit the 5-7-5 rule, though it may not be an accurate translation of the original anymore. RoboFish (talk) 13:30, 26 April 2016 (PDT)

Doesn't Work on Disguised Spies Anymore?

I've been using the Fan O War a lot lately and I knew for a fact that it worked on disguised Spies. However, lately I've been pounding away at Spies, intending to point out that anyone Marked for Death was a Spy, but I ended up killing a non-Dead Ringer Spy with the Fan O War and he never got the skull above his head nor did he even take Mini-Crits. Can someone test this? - TheKholdOne 04:49, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

That must mean that he had almost no health left, and you definitely killed him. But I think this is something worth testing out Daggra 05:21, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
I know it's been a while since I posted about this, but I JUST decided to test this out on tr_walkway using those puppet bots and bot_mimic, etc. Fan O' War does NOT work on Disguised Spies any more. Not even Cloaked Disguised Spies. Not sure if this is a bug or if it was just quietly taken out. - TheKholdOne 20:48, 25 June 2011 (PDT)

Vintage Quality Rarity

Do you think it's a good idea to point out the specific rarity of vintage Versions of this item and the Concherer as well? As the crafting window was very short and the weapon as such isn't very liked - and therefor, wasn't crafted very often - there are only around 350ish vintage versions, including dirty ones. If this matters anything: As trading is a siginificant part of this game by now and rarity does a lot of value, this could be stated here. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aerius (talk) • (contribs)

It's not really necessary. Saying that the ones crafted early are vintage is enough. How much a weapon is "liked" has no place in the article, nor does the perceived value in trading. forgot about it, I'm sorry. Also, why do you think so that it has no place in this article? It's a matter-of-fact thing that these are rare, not a personal opinion. Aerius 04:42, 7 September 2011 (PDT)
Because it's pretty redundant. It would be the same as putting 'this weapon is rarer than all other weapons before it' on all new weapon pages. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 04:48, 7 September 2011 (PDT)
There are plenty of vintage weapons that could be considered rare, but it isn't really necessary to specify that for each weapon; without hard facts, it could be considered speculation (which shouldn't be done on a Wiki). ButteredToast 05:55, 7 September 2011 (PDT)

Haiku Trivia

All the Shogun Pack articles with a haiku in their description have a hidden comment in their Trivia section stating that the haiku should not be mentioned because "everyone knows what a haiku is", yet it's still mentioned only on this article (which is what the hidden comment says should be done). If it's that obvious, then the Trivia should be removed from this article. Alternatively (and preferably), we add it to every Shogun Pack article.

I'm in favor of adding it to every Shogun Pack item, as there's only 8 of them (the Noise Maker doesn't have a description). - BrazilianNut (talk) 17:46, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
The Killer's Kabuto also has a haiku for an item description; I'm indifferent to acknowledging it in the Trivia personally, but if we do acknowledge it for the Shogun Pack items, it should probably be acknowledged for this item too.

Geisha Boy mentions the description being a Haiku and that it's a parody of a certain Haiku by Matsuo Bashō, a famous poet of Japan's Edo period and lists the Haiku that is being parodied. That is trivia. The trivia on this page also mentions that it's a parody of a certain haiku but doesn't have the particular haiku that's being parodied (it should). I don't think it's worth having a bunch of trivia saying "The description is a Haiku"...but if the Haikus in the descriptions are all plays on famous Haikus like Geisha Boy and Fan o' War that should be mentioned.
