Subclasses

Subclasses are unofficial, community-recognized playstyles in Team Fortress 2. They use specific weapon combinations or tactics that significantly change how a class is played. While not officially supported by the game, many subclasses have become part of the TF2 community culture.

Overview

Each class in Team Fortress 2 can be played in multiple different ways. Players discovered that certain weapon combinations create unique "subclasses" — roles with their own strategies, names, and reputations. Some subclasses are purely for fun, while others can be surprisingly effective in casual play.

Examples of popular subclasses

Scout

  • Thrower Scout – focuses on using throwable and impact-based weapons to deal burst damage from mid-range.
Commonly uses the Sandman to stun enemies and the Mad Milk to weaken groups before closing in.
Often paired with the Flying Guillotine for combo plays and crowd control.
  • High-Jump Scout – specializes in extreme mobility and aerial control.
Uses the Atomizer for triple jumps and the Force-A-Nature to gain extra height or push off surfaces.
Excels at hit-and-run tactics and reaching areas inaccessible to other classes.

Soldier

  • Trolldier – focuses on rocket jumping and air melee attacks.
Uses the Rocket Jumper to safely launch into the air and the Market Gardener to perform devastating aerial melee kills.
Built around mastering rocket jumps and timing attacks mid-flight.
  • Cow Mangler Soldier – specializes in energy-based weaponry.
Relies on the Cow Mangler 5000 for charged shots that can disable buildings and ignite enemies.
Prioritizes precision and resource management over raw explosive power.
  • Banner Soldier – focuses on supporting teammates through buffs.
Uses banners such as the Buff Banner, Battalion's Backup, or Concheror to provide various combat bonuses.
 Balances offense and team utility.
  • Paratrooper Soldier – excels in controlled aerial assaults.
Uses the B.A.S.E. Jumper to glide mid-air and maintain high ground advantage,
often paired with the Air Strike to unleash rapid volleys of rockets from above.
Known for raining down explosive barrages while staying airborne for extended periods.

Pyro

Deals consistent afterburn damage and pressures enemies from a distance.
Effective at disrupting enemy positioning while maintaining safety.
  • Phlog Pyro – relies on the Phlogistinator to build "Mmmph" and unleash powerful critical attacks.
Sacrifices airblast utility for high burst damage in close-range fights.
Excels at overwhelming enemies once charged.
  • Shark Pyro – specializes in underwater combat by using the Gas Passer to soak enemies and the Neon Annihilator to finish them off.
Performs best on maps with large water areas.
Utilizes unique weapon synergy for niche tactical advantages.

Demoman

  • Demoknight – specializes in close-range melee combat.
Uses the Eyelander paired with shields like the Chargin' Targe or Splendid Screen to charge enemies and deliver powerful strikes.
Focuses on mobility and building ÜberCharge through kills while engaging in melee.
  • Hybrid Knight – mixes ranged and melee tactics.
Combines sticky grenade spam using the Grenade Launcher with shield-based melee play using the Chargin' Targe or Splendid Screen.
Balances explosive damage with close-range survivability.
  • Sticky Jumper Demo – focuses on advanced mobility and trick jumps.
Uses the Sticky Jumper to navigate maps quickly and surprise opponents.
Prioritizes agility and unconventional attacks over raw damage.
