Help with getting HLMV to max quality?
Hey woj, I've been going through some tracking categories and found a lot of images flagged for needing new 3D models. I've got all the tools to do it (or, at least, I can fix the tools if they don't work), but I'm having some trouble with HLMV: imgur album of a bunch of things dxsupport.cfg
- I'm seeing pretty sharp aliasing on the model, which says to me that none of my settings are being applied.
- This laptop has 2 GPUs, because it's a touch screen -- I can also try on my desktop, which has just one.
- As far as I can tell, the intel card is used exclusively to run the screen, whereas the Nvidia card is used for actual drawing (e.g. teams calls, watching video, playing tf2). But the Nvidia settings are all on highest (see album).
- I also tried to set the dxsupport.cfg override (for both cards) but nothing happened.
Any suggestions? Darkid « Talk — Contribs » 15:03, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
- Strange, usually, replacing the dxsupport.cfg with the pre-configured one fixes most of the things. I usually don't even need to tinker my ATI/Intel settings, the .cfg does the whole job. Make sure you are not using any custom mods/files other than the fixes. The mod "CleanTF2plus" has an option to make textures flat, do you have that installed? Aditionally, you could try the following:
- Intentionally crashing TF2 to gather dump logs and find your exact Hardware ID to manually put on your dxsupport.cfg:
- 1- Intentionally crash TF2. You can easily do this by creating a server with the "Create a Server" option on the Main Menu. After connecting it, type "sv_cheats 1" and type "addcond 1" with any class that isn't the Sniper. After the game crashes, go to Steam/dumps, and open the most recent hl2.exe crash via Notepad or Notepad++;
- 2- Go to search (Ctrl+F) and type: "Uptime". Slightly below the Uptime, there's a section for "VendorId / DeviceId". This has the exact values you should put on your dxsupport.cfg, in case the pre-configured one isn't working. Follow the steps on Help:HLMV, but this should be easier than the current method that is on that page, as it doesn't require to go in multiple steps on Windows settings to know these values.
- Warning: This file has may have certain touchy information about your PC, so I do not advise sharing it anywhere (doesn't share with me either). For instance, it tells where your TF2 folder is located.
- Try tinkering with your Intel graphical settings and see if anything changes;
- TFMV has an option for Force Anti-Aliasing. I don't have this option enabled because I discovered that if I disable it, the anti-alias gets worse (but was easily fixable by replacing the .cfg again). You could try enabling it and see if it works for you. If it doesn't, I recommend replacing the dxsupport.cfg again (and make sure to back yours first before using said program);
- Have you recently checked your Integrity of Game Files? Everytime you check the cache for TF2, dxsupport.cfg will be replaced to its default values, and HLMV will look absolutely terrible. You need to replace dxsupport.cfg everytime you plan doing an Integrity check.
- In rare cases, having specific settings for an application on the NVIDIA control settings may result in things being worse. Try temporarily disabling the hlmv.exe entry and see if only relying on dxsupport.cfg works.
- Back when I had Windows 7, I had to set my HLMV to "Battery Saving" or "Balanced" as opposed to "Better Performance", otherwise I would have some weird issues. Try setting some battery-related settings on Windows or your NVIDIA graphics settings.
- Lastly, Windows 10 has an option that lets you use a specific GPU for an application (I think, my Windows, for whatever reason, don't have that option). It also has options related to Power saving, that may work as mentioned on the previous section: https://www.howtogeek.com/351522/how-to-choose-which-gpu-a-game-uses-on-windows-10/.
- My laptop also has 2 GPUs, but the difference is that I don't have NVIDIA here, which is a bit culprit on HLMV image making (has so many issues). I also discovered today that "Texture resolution on models may be displayed at 1/4 of its actual resolution (Mipmap 1) on NVIDIA graphics cards.", this information is available on the Model Viewer page on Valve Developer Community, which seems to be what you are experiencing right now. If nothing works, I'm available to do these 3D images, if you would like. I do have Python installed, but I'm not sure what specific version is being used nowadays for the 3D image creator... and I don't know what program is used nowadays either. If these steps doesn't work, try on your other computer. I haven't checked your dxsupport.cfg yet, but please try the suggestions I mentioned. - ▪ - 16:10, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
- A lot of the suggestions you mentioned make no sense because this is a clean install of steam + TF2. But, here's what I tried:
- I tried the dxsupport.cfg from your repo, no changes (still very aliased).
- Crashing TF2 results in the same vendor ID I got from windows, and does confirm that the NVidia card is in use (not the intel one). Which is good; I doubt the intel GPU could run TF2 anyways.
- I tried loading some other models to see if they were better. They weren't.
- I removed the NVidia entry for HLMV. That fixed it. Go figure.
- Darkid « Talk — Contribs » 16:25, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware this was a clean install of Steam and TF2, I just suggested what could have been the issue. HLMV is a pretty outdated software with no real "Options" support other than editing dxsupport.cfg, and even then, it's full of issues that requires fixing. No wonder why not so many people get into image creation, sometimes it's a pain in the butt to resolve certain issues. Considering the Valve Developer Community page states that NVIDIA drivers has this problem with textures, it's possible that having the NVIDIA entry removed from the .cfg causes to not use this specific Graphics Card anymore, and it's now relying on the Intel GPU. I use a hybrid AMD/ATI graphics card with an Intel GPU as well.
- Oh, and another question. Did you had the grey cornea issue with the classes' eyes (before and after you got the max settings working properly)? If so, was it fixed by simply removing the NVIDIA entry from the .cfg? I'm now curious if that's a possible fix for the grey cornea issue. There's still no real fix for the grey cornea issue other than the texture replacement I provided on the Help:HLMV page. It's also hard for me to investigate and try to find a solution as I almost never had this issue on my end (it happened a few times but I ended up fixing it with rather ease). - ▪ - 16:53, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Über Update
Hi! I saw you removed a piece of trivia regarding the missppelling of the Sniper Rifle as Sniper Rilfe. Just like you did, I checked on the way back machine and couldn't find the misspelling myself either. However, the image of day 2 on the Über Update page does show this misspelling. Does it mean that the misspelling was actually there at some point, but not captured, or that the screenshot is different and should be replaced? Thanks in advance! Poplinn (talk) 15:52, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- It seems to be an error that was quickly fixed in a matter of hours. Both the oldest page archived for the Uber Update and the File:Uber Update hub day 2.png file were uploaded the same day. The file upload probably came first as soon as Day 2 came out. Errors like these happen from time to time, Vaccinator and Vita-Saw had info that were later removed from an update/patch page. - ▪ - 16:14, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

my image creations
Hi!
Because some demonstration videos can not be uploaded due to no people are making thumbnails anymore, I spend some times learning how to use HLMV and making thumbnails with help of your guide. Can you take a look of them and see if there's anything wrong? They are File:Weapon_Demonstration_thumb_homerunner's_hobby.png and File:Weapon_Demonstration_thumb_mannbulance!.png.
Thanks!

- Well, I feel bad not replying this anytime sooner, I'm sorry. They look good actually, the only thing is that I would suggest remaking them in HWM models as opposed to regular models (HWM models can be found at "player/hwm/classname.mdl"). Looks like the videos got in already, though I think the thumbnail can still be replaced/updated (Youtube lets you change thumbnails afterwards, I'm pretty sure), although if it's actually possible to request a replacement for the thumbnail on the actual video, I have no idea. Maybe also adjust the lighting a bit on the Scout one, so his bag of chips isn't too reflective. - ▪ - 01:58, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, I will keep that in mind next time I make thumbnails. Not sure if it would be necessary and worth the effort to remake these since they are already uploaded. I don't think there is approval process for the thumbnails, just ask User:Ashe to replace it since they are managing the Youtube channel recently. --Alex┋T 06:39, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

- That's true, but I think the link should be more regarding the type of clothing than an example of a look-a-like in real life, an example in Red Dead may not be very good either, since it's another video game, I dunno. I haven't seen Google searches being linked here before, and some people don't like using Google at all. It felt weird to me as someone could just click it thinking it was a Wikipedia link where it wasn't the case. - ▪ - 01:52, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
Painted variants / Styles for Decorated Veteran
Hey! This is Diva Dan. I'm very new to wiki editing and appreciate the tips. I assume editing this page is how you chat with people on the wiki, so I just wanted to give thanks for the lengthy advice on my user page! I plan on redoing the images to have nicer quality and better cropping. Every hat is indeed angles different per class, but luckily I've still got all the source files and can recompile a special model in blender that preserves the same angle for all classes. Diva Dan (talk) 18:33, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- Sure thing. You can always ask for help on my TalkPage, the IRC or my Steam comments section. When you compile those models with the same model Axis, could you please share so it can be put on the Template:Painted_variants/Tutorial/Rotations page? That also means, if you could save the
Rot
,Trans
andlightrot
values on that page too. I have a GitHub repository related to HLMV-related work, and you can post there if you want (but I'll be honest, I'm pretty naive when it comes to GitHub so I don't know if you can really upload anything to my repository). Credits are always given on the "source" section of the repository (outside the "VPKs - ZIPs -Releases" folder). Also, I moved our discussion here to the bottom. New discussions made on TalkPages should always start from the bottom (you can use the "ADD TOPIC" button on top to make things easier). - ▪ - 20:55, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Copenhagen Games 2019 Item Icon Help
I need some help doing the item icons for the Copenhagen Games 2019 tournament medals. Their folder paths are cph_6v6_gold_2019
, cph_6v6_silver_2019
, cph_6v6_bronze_2019
, cph_hl_gold_2019
, cph_hl_silver_2019
, cph_hl_bronze_2019
, cph_participant_2019
, and cph_staff_2019
, for reference.
The problem I'm having is, at the rot and trans I've currently got them at, to emulate the Shugo style, you can't properly see that the medal is projecting a big hologram number from its circular projector. If you can find a rotation and position that you'd be satisfied with, which shows the big numbers a little clearer, please feel free to either take the icon images yourself and upload them via my Sandbox Template page, or tell me the values you used, and I'll give them a shot myself. Thank you for your help! - 05:20, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Perhaps do something similar to the File:Item icon Gaelic Golf Bag.png? So it's oriented like this as opposed to the usual angle (medal is in a "lying down" rotation, but has the same angle as the rest), but still keeping the same style. - ▪ - 18:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, the problem remains that the number is projecting out of the center of the circle on the far left of the medal, so it's mostly really visible on front facing angles. Which means the more I tilt the medal to begin with, the farther away the number is projected. That's why I can't find a good looking angle where the medal is tilted a bit too far to the left, because it projects the number into the void. The best I managed to get it is this sort of reverse-Shugo-style right-facing angle, because it projects the number into the rest of the medal's opaqueness. So let me know if that's good enough, and I'll work with that. — 10:29, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- I now have proposed item icons all ready to go with the rightward angle I had in that link -- it sort of almost has to be positioned like that, because larger projected numbers, like the whole of the three on the bronze medals, are barely fully visible even at the angle I had it positioned at. So again, just let me know if these are good enough to upload. — 12:18, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Strange Tearing w/NVIDIA Card
I've been trying to follow your HLMV Setup and Tricks guide to better improve my anti-aliasing. I installed HLMV++ and the preconfigured dxsupport.cfg, and I'm still running into the same recurring issue I have sometimes, where there's an odd, noticeable tear when some models are stationary. You can see it here, as a line that starts visibly on Heavy's cheek, and goes down a ways to just above where his nose starts.
I've had that sort of problem when making item icons for medals sometimes, as well. The tears go away when model position/rotation are adjusted, and only return when they're stationary. It's probably because of my graphics card, an NVIDIA GTX 1080 -- but I'm not sure how I can go about fixing it. — 08:17, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- I haven't had an Nvidia graphics card in a while now, so I don't know what is the issue. I have had similar problems before, see the September 22, 2020 version of File:Electric Twanger.png (will eventually be replaced), Scout's head has this weird line, but I don't know if that is the same problem as yours. I think the problem fixed itself once I also fixed the blur issue (which fixed itself for whatever reason), I haven't remade the picture yet so I haven't checked. If you are using HLMV++, you should maximize things from the program, there shouldn't be any need to use the pre-configured dxsupport.cfg with ++ when you can use the built-in quality options. I would suggest reverting back the .cfg to default (if you don't have a backup, doing a "verify integrity of files" on Steam will restore the .cfg to default), and maxing out on HLMV++ only. - ▪ - 20:01, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, that seemed to have fixed the line problem, as evidenced by my old and new shots of the Madness vs. Machines Tempered Tourmaline medal, but I'm not sure I have the best model quality. As you can see, the bottom edges of the hand and gemstone seem more jagged than before, and certainly Heavy's class emblem doesn't look that great either, though the rest of him does seem improved. I'm not sure what the problem is, considering I definitely set HLMV++ to maximum, restored the original dxsupport.cfg, and all that. I'm using TFMV, if that matters, and I did remember to uncheck "Force HLMV antialiasing". — 01:46, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Restore the old .cfg, then set HLMV++ to maximum, with this order (if you do the other way around, well, you'll be using the default .cfg values). If ++ still shows that it's set to Best and everything, just set to a lower quality temporarily, and set it back to Best on all the tabs. Oh, and make sure you restore the old .cfg with HLMV and / or HLMV++ closed. Then do the maximum settings things on ++ once it redownloads the .cfg from the integrity file or a backup. The texture setting should maximum by setting the highest value on the Picmip. And make sure you are using the latest version of HLMV++ (https://github.com/TF2CutContentWiki/HLMVPlusPlus-IssueTracker) As far as I know, the model quality is always set to the highest in HLMV, the pictures on the medal are related to anti-aliasing. On TFMV, if you enable the "Force HLMV antialiasing", it will change things on the .cfg file, and if you disable it, it will look pretty bad, so I suggest never touching that option. - ▪ - 02:02, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Having done all that, I think the problem is just that the settings don't seem to carry over to vanilla HLMV after I set them in HLMV++ - here's a photo of a Heavy model loaded into HLMV++ through Steam Load Model, and it looks far better than the one I had. But if I then load that same Heavy in through TFMV, because it's using the base HLMV, with "Force HLMV anti-aliasing" off, the class emblem looks jagged again. What do I do about that? Can I hook TFMV to HLMV++, do I have to re-enable "Force HLMV anti-aliasing," even though your tutorial advises against having it on? — 03:01, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Just use HLMV++ then, other 2 image creators have been using it since it fixes a couple of things, like the grey cornea problem and blur issue. The only thing is that it's not possible to use the auto paint chart tool on TFMV with HLMV++ (because TFMV can't detect ++'s window, and HLMV++ uses $colortint_base values instead of $color2 from the .vmt, which TFMV changes only $color2 values, which is what regular HLMV uses). If you load anything via TFMV, just close regular HLMV and open ++, go to recent models, and load the one from TFMV's folder. Then use the built-in screenshot tool in HLMV++ to take screenshots instead (you'll need to have the Invisible tfmv_bg.mdl background thing to work, extract the .zip to tf/custom). Attempting to remove the tfmv_bg.mdl from the submodels on HLMV++ will crash the program, although you can remove it from the Regedit, or by unload all loaded submodels from the player model, though the invisible background thing above makes it a lot easier as you don't need to actually unload tfmv_bg.mdl. Also make sure you don't have "Background" checkbox marked on "Render", otherwise the screenshot won't be transparent. Set the background color on TFMV to RGB 0 0 0 as well. Settings done on ++ should carry over to the regular HLMV since it modifies the dxsupport.cfg file. - ▪ - 13:30, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Now I'm back to square one, with the anti-aliasing seeming to have done nothing to fix the tearing on the medal at high antialiasing. You can see the line go down the middle, most visible at the bottom of the gemstone. It looks exactly the way it did when I just ran TFMV with "Force HLMV anti-aliasing" on. This whole thing has just sent me around in a circle, and I'm about to just give up. — 15:12, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Well, I suggest trying to make things back to default. Do the following, in this order:
- 1- Delete dxsupport.cfg, hlmvplusplus.exe and hlmvplusplus.dll;
- 2- Verify integrity of game files via Steam;
- 3- Re-download HLMV++'s .exe and .dll (make sure to drop to Team Fortress 2\bin);
- 4- Open HLMV++ and set everything to maximum;
- 5- Do not re-open TFMV. Instead, look up for an item's internal model file by using Ctrl+F on the tf/scripts/items/items_game.txt file;
- 6- See if it looks better without using TFMV.
- Another thing you can attempt is going to the NVIDIA Control Panel (right-click on your desktop), and try adjusting the graphics settings. Try adding "hlmvplusplus.exe" to the list (go to Manage 3D Settings -> Program Settings, I assume). At any instance, try using "application controlled" as opposed to NVIDIA-controlled or something like that, especially on anti-aliasing related options.
- Lastly, if you are using Windows 10 or 11, try setting the hlmvplusplus.exe app to use your GPU, by following this guide (pureinfotech.com). Choose "classic app", select "hlmvplusplus.exe", go to "Options" and set the radio button to your GPU. If that doesn't work, try forcing Power Saving (as back in my Laptop days, running regular HLMV in Power Saving did solved some issues, for some reason). - ▪ - 15:51, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Frostcliff and Rumford Payload Carts
Hello! I'm trying to add images of the two new payload carts added in the Smissmas 2022 update, and have been trying to render their models in HLMV. I've successfully extracted the models from both of their .bsp files, but I've run into a bit of a problem - they are both overlay models (a layer of snow on Rumford, and some festive lights for Frostcliff) that are attached to the original payload cart model. I'm not sure how to render two models at once in HLMV - any suggestions? Thanks! Epsilonal (talk) 11:04, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- From what I have seen, these are the same case as Bloodwater, which aren't possible to load as "Submodels" in the Model Viewer as they are positioned by the map makers onto the Payload model. I got in contact with one of the creators of Bloodwater and he gave me some tips regarding how this works, and I know the exact placements for the objects in Bloodwater's case, which in theory, should be possible to recreate with Blender. I can't promise anything, but I'll see what I can do. I also haven't checked everything yet, it's just from a quick glance on the files. I was unable to load any models from pl_rumford but I was able to load models from pl_frostcliff. - ▪ - 21:02, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
- Well, good news. After much hard work, I did manage to get the Bloodwater Payload in the model viewer. It's a very complicated process, so I'll do the 2 Payloads for this update (which should be a lot easier than the Bloodwater one), but I will eventually write a guide somewhere someday, as it's mostly text-based. Thanks for posting this to my TalkPage so I ended up trying and succeeding in making the Bloodwater payload cart into the model viewer. - ▪ - 01:15, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

- Hmm, I just checked that there's two missing custom CTF models, for Frosty and Snowfall. I don't know if these has the same steps as the Payloads I just did (I don't see why they would need to be like the Payloads), but I'll see what I can do. May be just a simple model load. - ▪ - 18:05, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

HLMV
Hello! I have a problem with HLMV hat color not matching the character's skin (example: the hat is RED, and the character is BLUE but I was expected for the hat to be BLUE, and the character to be BLUE).Falcons (talk) 11:41, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
Wikichievement for your constant contributions regarding unused paint varients

Nihil | Wikichievement unlocked! For adding a lot of unusued paint varients to pages. |
Whenever I go to Recent Changes, I always see you adding unused paint varients to a lot of cosmetic pages. It's great to see you constantly contributing, and to see you making more works I have to do. Thank you so much. <3 Also, they may not be screenshots, but there is no exact wikichievement to admire people who do similar things you do. So, here it is, the closest wikichievement I could find! (Not sure this should have been Jack of All Trades.) Anyway, I hope you complete this work soon and make wiki better!
Nihil (talk) 16:10, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. There's still a couple to be uploaded (7 of them), as well a whole lot more that haven't been made yet (related to Tournament Medals), which I may or may not do them. - ▪ - 16:46, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
An error on team color images of Copper's Hard Top?
Not sure if it's only me, but I see "Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination". Other images work fine to me, so I think it's not the problem with me and my phone, but not sure if it really is. I think you need to check them out and see if they're working. If they look fine to you, then I gotta need to check if something's wrong with my phone. If they do not, you can fix them before anyone notices! Have a nice day, and hope you finish this endless task soon.
P.S. It seems clicking on the uploaded date of the image itself does work, but I can't see them on pages, including the file page thingy itself.
Nihil (talk) 06:17, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- This is a bug that happens around the Wiki. It usually fixes itself after a few days. This commonly happens when uploading new revisions when the file had a previous revision by VasyaTheWizard, for some reason. But it has happened with other files that didn't had his name on the File history, too, but not as often. I don't know what is the cause of it. - ▪ - 13:32, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Textureless Shovel Request
Hi there, I'm doing a silly thing with my userpage hotbar, and I need a textureless Shovel icon. If you remember your rotation values for the Festive Shovel item icon you did, can you create one of a regular Shovel with the checkerbord missing textures for me? I'd make one myself, but the values you've used aren't listed. The standard (25.276474 -38.199379 -18.572231) rot makes the Shovel stand upright, and it isn't listed in your weapons rotations page, since there are no Decorated Shovels. Any filename in my User ThatHatGuy
space is fine. Thank you! — 05:52, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- I couldn't get a 1:1 match with the Shovel, but it's good enough: File:User ThatHatGuy Item icon Textureless Shovel.png - ▪ - 17:00, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
When to use default lightrot
Hi! I've been doing some sporadic image work for the wiki again, and was informed in the process that default lightrots are used for most images recently. Is that only for cosmetic images, or should that be used for 2D weapon images as well? I did new versions of the Ubersaw 2D images with the default lightrot, since the originals used lightrots pretty close to that, but I tried default lightrot on the Shortstop and it looked really strange—the handle area nearest the trigger blended in with the rest of the handle, and the whole thing just looked really flat. Is that a scenario where messing with light rotation is considered acceptable? -- Rea - (Talk) 04:49, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Well, for infobox images of cosmetic images, as well the class gallery (for multi class / all class cosmetics), it should either use the default
lightrot
, or a slight change, but nothing too drastic. Items for the Pyro usually requires somelightrot
adjustment as Pyro's lenses are usually really bright, depending on the camera position.
- When adjusting the
lightrot
, the model(s) should not appear very dark, the adjustment should be pretty subtle. For painted variants and item-skins (RED and BLU, as well Styles), it should always use the defaultlightrot
, with the exception of some rare instances like the Nanobalaclava and Summer Hat painted variants.
- If you make an image for a weapon that has no BLU Variant, then feel free to slightly adjust the
lightrot
. If there are team-colors (RED / BLU), then I recommend keeping the defaultlightrot
. If it looks too bright, try adjusting the camera. Hopefully that helps. - ▪ - 18:11, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
Photo Explosion™

Andrew360 | Wikichievement unlocked! Consider this a Photo Explosion™ instead, because my god, how does one even upload over 23,000... 24,000... wait now it's 25,000 images?! All of those 25,000 are high quality images, whether those images be cosmetic preview images, painted variants, backpack icon images, hidden texture images, and even payload cart images that take over one day to make because the map makers thought it would be too easy if the payload cart was just one simple model. I said it once and I'll say it again, you are a HLMV wizard, and source engine sorcerer. |
Andrew360 02:09, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- Pretty wholesome, thank you. It has been a little while since I last got a Wikichievement. Always a joy in getting one after spending days and days taking over the entire Recent Changes log and the Special:NewFiles page. All in the name of high quality images, of course. - ▪ - 03:12, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Button request
Hellos! I'm currently improving the map infobox template and I thought it would be a good idea to include a "Subscribe on the Steam Workshop" button for custom maps.
Could you make a new version of File:Btn_scm.png for me? In case it helps, here's some artwork for reference: [1] [2] — Tark 13:08, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
