Due to the comedic style of Team Fortress 2 and Valve's humor, the game includes references, usually in a humorous fashion. There are many different types, from games to movies. Even jokes that have developed within the game and its community have been included. Below are references specific to the Scout class.

List of references (Scout)

Books and Comics

Batman

Achievement: I'm Bat Man

A reference to, of course, the fictional vigilante Batman. In addition, this line (with Bat Man being one whole word), was spoken by Michael Keaton in the 1989 movie adaption.

Games

Super Mario 64

Several of the noises the Scout makes when dodging bullets under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch are imitations of sound effects from the Super Mario Bros. series, starting in Super Mario 64.

Left 4 Dead

Ding Dong!
The Scout

Possible reference to the 'Churchguy' from Left 4 Dead, who says this while ringing the church bell. Both characters are voiced by Nathan Vetterlein.

I... hate... doctors!
The Scout

Possible reference to Left 4 Dead's Francis, who often throughout gameplay expresses his hatred for numerous things, including doctors.

In-Jokes

Meet the Heavy

A reference to the high price of maintaining Sasha mentioned by the Heavy in Meet the Heavy.

Meet the Scout

The name of the Force-A-Nature weapon is a reference to the Scout's description of himself in Meet the Scout.

Meet the Sniper

A reference to the Sniper's choice of abode and transport as seen in Meet the Sniper. A running joke in various response lines has the other classes mock the Sniper for living in a van.

TV and Film

Field of Dreams

Achievement: If You Build It.

"If you build it, he will come" is a line from the fantasy/drama film Field Of Dreams and has been used many times in popular culture.

First Blood & First Blood Part II

Achievements: First Blood & First Blood, Part 2

The achievements First Blood & First Blood, Part 2 are references to the first two Rambo films, titled First Blood and First Blood Part II. First Blood is also a common term in other FPS games, used when someone gets the first kill in a given match.

Full Metal Jacket

What is your major malfunction, brotha?
The Scout

A reference to a line by Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket on whom the Soldier's personality is strongly based.

ShamWow Ad

No other class gonna do that!
The Scout
You see that?
The Scout
You seein' this?
The Scout

Upon fan request, the Scout makes reference to the 'ShamWow' ads, featuring 'Vince', who has been likened to the Scout by fans. The popular "You followin' me camera guy?" line is conspicuously absent.

The Simpsons

He's already dead! He's already deaaad!
The Scout

The line was "borrowed" from The Simpsons and recorded for Meet the Sandvich, though it was eventually not used.

There Will be Blood

I. Eat. Your. Sandwiches! I eat 'em up!
The Scout

A reference to the famous 'milkshake' line from the acclaimed film There Will Be Blood. Also a reference to the Scout's taking of the Heavy's Sandvich in Meet the Scout.

The Six Million Dollar Man

The Scout's "Whanananana..." while under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch is an imitation of the slow-mo sound effect from The Six Million Dollar Man.

Wilhelm Scream

The so-called "Wilhelm Scream" is a sound byte from 1951 film Distant Drums. The sound byte was re-discovered by Ben Burtt, sound editor for Star Wars with the label "Man being eaten by alligator." Burtt then implemented the sound byte in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when a Stormtrooper is shot. Burtt named the sound byte after Private Wilhelm, a character in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River who used the scream. Since then it has been used hundreds of times in movies, television, and games (Wikipedia). In Team Fortress 2 it makes a cameo appearance as one of the Scout's death cries, as well as in the Trailer 2. The scream itself can be heard here.

Music

The Sandman

The name is an hint towards the popular 1954 song "Mr Sandman" by the Chordettes (Wikipedia), fitting well with the fact how the baseball puts hit enemies "to sleep" for a short duration.

Sport

Baseball

I'm battin' a thousand!
The Scout
  • The term comes from baseball statistics, where it signifies getting a hit for every turn at bat. It was transferred to other activities in the 1920s.

  • The Scout's accent and use of a bat as a melee weapon reflect the avid baseball culture of the Boston area including the renowned Boston Red Sox.
  • The name of Bonk! Atomic Punch may refer to the term "The Bonk" or "Hitting the wall", a condition when an athlete (usually in endurance sports) suddenly loses energy or becomes fatigued, much like how the Scout used to slow down after the effects of Bonk! wore off.

Achievement: A Year To Remember

Achievement: Beanball

  • "Beanball" is a colloquial sports term for a ball thrown at an opposing player with the intention of striking him such as to cause harm, often connoting a throw at the player's head.

Achievement: Blocking The Plate

  • In baseball, blocking the plate is a common technique performed by a catcher to prevent a runner from scoring. The act of blocking the plate accounts for most of the physical contact in baseball.

Achievement: Brushback

  • A brushback pitch is a pitch thrown high and inside, usually a fastball, to force the batter away from the plate, often to intimidate.

Achievement: Caught Napping

  • A baserunner who is tagged out because he wasn't paying attention to what the defensive players were doing is "caught napping." Often this involves a pickoff play in which the infielder sneaks up behind the runner and takes a throw from the pitcher, or, less often, the catcher.

Achievement: Closer

  • In baseball, a closing pitcher, more frequently referred to as a closer, is a relief pitcher who specializes in closing out games.

Achievement: Doctoring The Ball

  • To "doctor the ball" means to apply a foreign substance to the ball or otherwise altering it in order to put an unnatural spin on a pitch.

Achievement: Fall Classic

  • The World Series—the championship series of Major League Baseball, in which the champion of the American League faces off against the champion of the National League. Typically, this series takes place in October, so playing in October is the goal of any major league team.

Achievement: Foul Territory

  • In baseball, foul territory or foul ground is defined as the area of the field outside of the foul lines. The foul lines and foul poles are not part of foul territory.

Achievement: Gun Down

  • A play on the phrase Run Down in which a runner is stranded between two bases, and runs back and forth to try to avoid fielders with the ball. The fielders (usually basemen) toss the ball back and forth, to prevent the runner from getting to a base, and typically close in on him and tag him.

Achievement: No Hitter

  • A no-hitter is a reference to a game in which one team managed to prevent the other team from getting a hit.

Achievement: Out of the Park

  • Out of the ballpark is a Home Run in which the ball went over all of the outfield seatings (i.e. it went outside the whole arena).

Achievement: Pop Fly

  • A pop fly is a fly ball that goes high up in the air without travelling far out in the field.

Achievement: Race for the Pennant

  • A Pennant Race is the last weeks of a baseball season.

Achievement: Round Tripper

  • A Home Run. The analogy is to a commuter who buys a round-trip ticket from home plate to second base and back again to home.

Achievement: Side Retired

  • When the third out of an inning is called, the "side is retired" and the other team takes its turn at bat. A pitcher or a defensive team can be said to have "retired the side."

Achievement: The Big Hurt

  • Frank Thomas is a Major League Baseball designated hitter who is currently a free agent. He was given the nickname "The Big Hurt" by broadcaster Ken Harrelson, who coined the term in the 1992 season.

Achievement: The Cycle

  • Hitting for the cycle means to hit a single, double, triple and Home Run in the same game. To accomplish this feat in order is termed a "natural cycle." Hitting for the cycle is a rare enough occurrence that Major League Baseball keeps special statistics on it.

Achievement: Triple Play

  • A Triple Play is the act of making 3 outs during the same hit.

Achievement: Dodgers 1, Giants 0

  • A reference to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants whom are two professional baseball teams with a long history of rivalry.
  • The name of the achievement could also be a double entendre. While under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch, the Scout is impervious to bullets, thereby making him a "dodger". "Giant" most likely refers to the Heavy's massive size.

Other

Hippocrates

Where's your precious Hippo-Crates now?
The Scout

Upon domination of a Medic, the Scout will sometimes say 'where's your precious Hippo Crates now?'. This is a reference to Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine.

Hermes

The Scout's class icon depicts a winged shoe. Hermes, the Greek messenger of the gods, was most commonly depicted wearing a winged cap and winged sandals. Both the Scout and Hermes are the most rapid of their respective groups.
