Where's your precious Hippo-crates now?
The Scout

Mann Co. Supply Crates are tool items obtainable only through the item drop system. They are shown as open-style wooden shipping crates, wrapped in chains held with a comically large padlock. Mann Co. Supply Crates can be opened with the use of a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key.

When a crate is opened, a five second timer ticks down, alongside a sound effect of chains jangling and wood creaking. The player will receive one of a set of items, which are listed in the crate's description and are dependent on its series. This item is announced to the server in a similar format to regular dropped Items. The crate and key are removed from the player's inventory and replaced with the uncrated item.

While Mann Co. Supply Crates are obtained through the item drop system they do not add to the total cap of items you can obtain each week.[1]

Contents

Note: Rare item statistics assume drop rates are equal regardless of series. It is also assumed that the series of the crates are dropping in a uniform distribution.

Festive Winter Crate
Level 10
Crate Series #6
This crate is unusually festive.
Its contents are unknown and
normal keys don't fit the lock.

You'd better hold onto it.
There'll probably be a way to open it later.

This item will expire on Dec 31, 2010 (23:00:00).

Added in the December 10, 2010 Patch.

This crate could not be opened with the normal Mann Co. Supply Crate Key. Instead it required a Festive Winter Crate Key purchased from the Mann Co. Store that was released in conjunction with the Australian Christmas event, or a Stocking Stuffer Key. They expired on December 31, 2010, upon when they were removed from player's backpacks.

Drop rate statistics available from Toahpt's and Epsilonsss' SPUF threads and calculated here.

Note: sample size of 1,043 crates. May not add up to 100% due to rounding.

*** Please note that the unusual "drop rate" in crates series 3, 4 and 5 haven't been fully calculated yet.

Demonstration

Update history

November 19, 2010 Patch

  • Crates Series 1 and 2 no longer drop in game. (People with Series 1 and 2 crates still had the attributes set to 1 and 2, but they took on the schema ID of Series 3 and 4 crates, respectively.)

December 10, 2010 Patch

  • Updated the Mann Co. Supply Crate description.
  • Added Festive Winter Crates.
  • Crates Series 3, 4, and 5 no longer drop in game. (the Series 3, 4, and 5 crates are listed as 7, 8, and 9 respectively if viewed online. These crates have not changed in attributes, but are expected to change schema ID to the newer crates. The series 1 and 2 (with 3 and 4 ID) are listed as 7 and 8.)

Trivia

  • Although Valve modeled the padlocked chain for the icon, the padlocked box can't be found in the game files; its textures, however, can be found. The crate itself uses a model that appears to be the same as models/props_hydro/barrel_crate_half.mdl .
  • In the Mac update trailer, a RED Soldier can be seen sifting through a crate of hats, hinting at the existence of crates before the Mann-Conomy Update.
