Pickup Type: Health

Health pickups are a vital item in and out of combat. These items can have drastic effects on the flow of battle in both one-on-one and group combat. Be sure to make use of them whenever you can, but also be mindful of others who may need these resources more, such as friendly Medics.

Health may also refers to the hit point total that governs the survivability of the varying classes.

Health Kit pickups come in three different sizes. Each one heals the player for a different percentage of their total class health value. There are also several other sources of health that you may encounter:

When healed by any source, a small cross of the player's team color is emitted making it obvious when they are healed.

Health Kits

  • Small (Pill Bottle/Chocolate Bar) 20.5% heal (10 sec re-spawn)
  • Medium (First Aid Kit/Candy Tin) 50% heal (10 sec re-spawn)
  • Large (Ice Cooler) 100% heal (10 sec re-spawn)

Dropped Items

  • Sandviches - If dropped by a Heavy upon death, a Sandvich will heal a Scout for 75 HP and all other classes for 50. If the Heavy drops the Sandvich using alt-fire, it heals 50% of total health.
  • Dalokohs Bars - If dropped by a Heavy upon death, a Dalokohs Bar will heal a Scout for 75 HP and all other classes for 50.

Other Sources

  • Dispensers (Level 1 - 10HP/sec ; Level 2 - 15HP/sec ; Level 3 - 20HP/sec)
  • Resupply Lockers (Medical Cabinet) 100% heal
  • Sandvich (300 HP when eaten over 4 seconds)
  • Dalokohs Bar (60 HP when eaten over 4 seconds and also grants the Heavy an extra 50 health)
  • Mad Milk restores health equal to 75% of the damage a friendly player inflicts on milk-coated enemies.

Strategy

  • Use health pickups to instantly extinguish fire inflicted by Pyros.
  • Use health pickups to their full potential. If an item heals you for 50%, consider waiting until your health drops below 50% before picking it up.
  • Let Medics pick up Health before you do. Their purpose is to heal other players including yourself and they will likely need it more than you.
  • Staying next to a Dispenser or cart in battle can give you an advantage.
  • As Spy, it is possible to use health pickups even at full health in order to change the displayed health of your disguise.
  • Note that unlike the Medigun and the Kritzkrieg, any health pickups will not overheal you.
  • Don't be selfish with pickups, if you have much health left you can leave them to teammates with very little health.
  • Don't use health pickups when being healed by a Medic, not only does the Medic's ÜberCharge go up at a faster rate when you are injured, but teammates who don't have a Medic will likely need the health more.

Trivia

  • The sound for picking up a health kit is the same for getting health in Half-Life, another Valve game.
  • In the Event Harvest map, there are a decorative spiders in the resupply cabinets and the health kits take the form of chocolate bars (small) and candy tins (medium).
  • The Heavy can recharge an alt-fire dropped Sandvich by picking up any health kit, assuming he already has full HP when he does so. Consider dropping the Sandvich for a teammate instead of letting them pick up a small health kit. This will recover 50% of their health instead of 20.5%
  • There are attributes left in the game suggesting an unlock which may increase/decrease the health gained from health kits, or that from medics.
