::The reason why I suggested a page extraction in the first place is so that the table doesn't need to be just ''one'' table. You could have individual sections for the different types, like how ability and kill taunts are also separated over here.

And while you're right that the information is listed on the taunt page itself, my point was that I didn't want to have to click on every single page just to see if it loops or not.

Updating the taunt pages

So we need to update the class taunt pages that don't have the high-fives. Anyone who is good with images wanna take a crack at that? If not, I'll work on it this weekend. -- En Ex (talk) 18:07, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

A question, wouldn't the Sandvich taunt be considered a special taunt, like Oktoberfest? Justin8 12:56, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Amputator's healing taunt

Should the Amputator's taunt be classified as a Special Taunt? Given that it has an additional ability very similar to (and definitely more powerful than) the Kritzkrieg's taunt, one would think it would fit right in even though it's visually identical to the Bonesaw/Vitasaw's taunt. -- KaiserYoshi 09:45, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Videos

Does anyone really need four videos to illustrate the exact same set of taunts? Hostile Companion Cube Roar 05:55, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Was about to pull this to attention. This is what the crap wiki does, they have a multitude of videos all of the same thing on the same page. Anyways, the unused guitar taunt is should go on the Dischord page itself. We should keep if any, one of the high five videos, and get an AA image for the bottle taunt to go on the bottle page. Just an ideal way to fix things. Any other ideas people? -= M-NINJA Burger Gib.png =- 02:27, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Possible use of High Five?

Recently, I was parked in a corner, when a Demoman walks up and taunts. This somehow triggered the high five animations. I'm thinking it's some sort of mod, but if it's not, it may be worth adding.Gigaspine7 21:11, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Same here, but I had a high-five when me and Soldier were in front of each other and taunting simultaneously. Have to check on couple of different servers to see if it's a mod or not. Ae jarv 12:50, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Must have ammo?

Why to include that? Everyone knows that if you don't have ammo you can't exuip the weapon. Besides you can do the taunt with no ammo. Shoot your last bullet and then quickly press g before the game switches your weapons. There should just be a trivia section explaining that in the bottom of the article. --SandeProElite 17:14, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Irrelevant, IMO. Besides, that stuff doesn't belong in trivia. It's a game mechanic. Turboplant 18:11, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Do we need these videos?

Take a look at the videos on the class specific taunt articles (let's use the Soldier taunts as an example). I suggest that we remove these as the individual taunts are demonstrated on a per-weapon basis and therefore in more depth by the weapon demonstration project. Besides, I think whoever put them on the articles might be farming views as the videos have been made with the Replay system. i-ghost 13:26, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree, they're not needed. User Moussekateer signature sprite.pngMoussekateer·talk 14:20, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Same for me, you can delete it. It was only added to farm views. --Pratolli 14:26, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't like the high five video. Its 8 minutes long and seeing as the taunts take up all of 4 seconds it seems like a brilliant waste of time . It's just repeated heaps and heaps of times and i think the only way you can get off with that is by providing different angles. Anyway, I think it'd be better if someone remade the video.Pierow 06:48, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi-five?

In the "hi-five" description, it says that all classes except the Engineer have hi-five taunts, but it then says that after the Soldier and Demo got their taunts, Engi got his in the Engi update, followed by the others. So which is it? Can the Engineer Hi-five? Ericson666 17:29, 13 July 2011 (PDT)

Class taunt demonstrations

I think it's kinda silly that we just have images for taunts on the class taunt pages, like Scout taunts. Maybe videos or .gif files should replace them? Same for the kill taunt pages, like Decapitation. --SilverHammer 18:50, 13 July 2011 (PDT)

Kill taunt and Taunt kill

There is no difference between the terms, except that "Taunt kill" sounds better when used as a verb (i.e. "I taunt killed that Pyro" vs. "I kill taunted that Pyro") However, there is a specific someone intent on changing every instance of "Kill taunt" to "Taunt kill", effectively gradually obliterating its existence. Therefore, I would like request that "Taunt kill" is entirely acceptable and should not be changed to "Kill taunt" just because. Agree? -Rocket Ship BBQ 19:11, 19 September 2011 (PDT)

Special Taunt Criteria

What are the criteria for Special taunts? The page defines it as an attack that deals 500+ damage, however, taunts such as the Eureka Effect taunt, Mmmph, Oktoberfest, and the Medicating Melody do no damage by themselves. Additionally, other "special" taunts that grant some sort of passive ability are missing such as the Heavy nomming his Sandvich and the Scout drinking animations. As it stands, the table needs to be reordered with new categories.

Also, shouldn't the Pyro be holding the Phlogistinator for the Mmmph taunt?

Rename Action Taunts and Special Taunts

Currently, the article lists Special Taunts - taunts that have an effect on gameplay, like kill taunts or Heavy eating a Sandvich, and Action Taunts, taunts that used to be equipped in the Action slot, like the high five taunt. I propose that we rename the Action Taunts section to Special Taunts, as they're no longer equipped in the Action slot, but rather their own designated Taunt slot (and the fact that that's what their item type is depicted as), and think of a different name to label the current Special Taunts section as. I was thinking of something along the lines of Kill Taunts at first, but not all of them are kill taunts; they just all do something beneficial in the game. -MarioMaster2008 (talk) 21:04, 23 June 2014 (PDT)

What if we simply swap the names? :B
- BrazilianNut (talk) 10:08, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
EDIT: Okay, let me explain this a bit better.
I think Action Taunts should be renamed to Special Taunts for the same reasons: that's their item type, and they no longer go in the Action slot.
I believe Action Taunts is a more fitting name for the current "Special Taunts" as the characters perform an action that actually affects the game: they're healing themselves, they're stunning or killing the enemy, etc.
Another name I thought of were "Effect Taunts", since, as previously mentioned, they have some sort of effect, they're not just the character showing off or, well, taunting.
Also, holy crap, I just noticed this topic is from four years ago. o_o

I don't think it needs to be changed, action sounds better then special taunts, sure its not used in the "Action Slot" but that is already explained on its section. User MrJohnson Signature.png MrJohnson (talk) 22:50, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Cosmetic items used to be Hats. Then came the miscs. Now they're all referred to as cosmetic items. Same thing here: these taunts used to be equipped in the Action Slot, but now have their own slots and are called Special Taunts by the game. Shouldn't consistency with the game be prioritized over "sounding better" (which is most likely simply due to being used to them being called that)?
I propose these changes:
  1. Change "Taunt kills" to "Kill taunts".
  2. Create a separate category for the non-killing weapon taunts with effects, like Mmmph and Oktoberfest.
  3. Change "Action taunts" to "Special Taunts".
Reasons:
  1. "Taunt kill" seems more like it's referring to the death caused by a taunt than to a taunt that can kill. It would also be more consistent with Special Taunts and most likely whatever name we gave to #2 (Action Taunts, Effect Taunts etc).
  2. Currently, these are listed together with the taunt kill/kill taunts, when they're clearly not that.
  3. The aforementioned reasons: they no longer go in the Action slot and they're called Special Taunts by the game.
- BrazilianNut (talk) 18:17, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

Here's what I propose:

== Action taunts ==
Certain taunts when performed will cause the class to execute extra actions that affect the game, such as using the active weapon, activating an ability, or performing an attack.
Table with taunts such as Nomming and Oktoberfest
=== Kill taunts ===
"Kill taunts" are taunts that allow the class to perform a unique attack animation that can stun, damage, and/or kill any enemy players caught by them. They can deal 400 damage or more, having the potential to kill any opponent in a single hit (with the exception of Armageddon and Execution, which can only deal a maximum of 400 damage and thus are not powerful enough to kill a Heavy with maximum overheal).
Killing an enemy with these is known as a "taunt kill".
Table with taunts such as Home Run and Hadouken
== Special Taunts ==
Special Taunts are items that can be equipped from the player's Backpack in the loadout screen. Once a class has a Special Taunt equipped, pressing G will bring up the taunt menu, allowing them to perform the taunt of their choice; pressing G again will have the player perform the regular taunt for the active weapon (if it has one). Each class can equip up to 8 Special Taunts.
Table with Special Taunts like the Trackman's Touchdown and the Conga

Taunts can have a craft number ?

I've just gone to the action taunt's page and noticied that it's marked that taunts can have a craft number. I've also saw that with the recent patch(about the taunts) : June 23, 2014 Patch

In the game we can see that the taunts are craftable, but is there any plan to craft them ? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dasboumis (talk) • (contribs)

There's no way to craft taunts as it currently stands. Valve would have to add in a blueprint for that. An item can have craft numbers even if there isn't a blueprint for it, or if it isn't craftable at all. All three of these things are separate settings in the schema. --Omolong (talk) 08:11, 22 November 2014 (PST)

Unused content section

The unused content mentions:

  • There are two models for taunts in the game files that have no associated class or animation. One is red coffee mug with a "V for Victory" symbol on it, along with coffee inside the mug. The other is a serving platter with a skull inside of it, along with a towel under the bottom of the platter, suggesting it was to go over an arm.

Isn't it safe to assume the V for Victory is for Fresh Brewed Victory, and the platter is for the Headcase taunt?
GrampaSwood (talk) 20:36, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

The "V Mug" is already on the "Fresh Brewed Victory" page (as it was added in the same update and it's in a similar folder to the Fresh Brewed), the platter was added to the game files way before the Headcase was added, so it's likely unrelated. Page rework

I think this page needs to be reworked. As it stands right now, it floods readers with information and translators with unnecessary work.

We don't need all those descriptions of the taunts, as brief as they might be; these are already covered in more detail in both the articles for the individual taunts and the class taunts pages (which provide the class-specific animations for all-class taunts).

The only information that can be found here and not on those pages is duration, which can easily be moved over while being more precise (i.e. having the specific duration for each class in all-class taunts with a variable duration, like the Schadenfreude, instead of just "Variable").

I propose replacing the tables with ones such as {{Haunted quality table}} and {{Halloween-Full Moon restricted items}}. - BrazilianNut (talk) 09:08, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Pictogram plus.png Support, I agree that the taunt-specific pages are the place for information and not this template.

Kill taunt names

So recently I may have found some of the official names of some taunt kills in the code. In game\shared\tf\tf_shareddefs.cpp:L822-902, there is an array listing some custom damage types which includes some taunt attack (indicated by TAUNTATK). Some of these are just descriptions (E.g. "engineer guitar smash" or "engineer arm kill") but some actually have identifiable names such as "High noon" (presumably Showdown), "Grand Slam" (presumably Home Run, or "Barbarian Swing" (presumably Decapitation). A lot of the current names are not official (at least, nothing I can find in tf_english.txt). If I find anything linking these to specific weapons, I'd say we'll have to change these names to be the official ones.
To update: The following names would be changed.
Showdown would become High Noon.
Home Run would become Grand Slam.
Fencing would stay the same.
Kamikaze would become Grenade (I'd argue keeping the custom name is better).
Decapitation would become Barbarian Swing.
Spinal Tap would become Uberslice.
Dischord would become Guitar smash.
Organ Grinder would become either Arm Kill or Arm Blender (I vote for the 2nd one as it's more creative).
Armageddon would stay the same.
Gas Blast would stay the same.
Execution would stay the same, as there is nothing I could find about that (yet).
GrampaSwood (talk) 18:31, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Pictogram plus.png  I agree on changing the names of to the official ones shown in the files, no doubts with that, we need to keep this wiki most accurate and "official" as possible.
Moreover, recently I encountered an unused item that does not have an official spanish translation, at least not in the tf_spanish.txt file, the Smoke Bomb and one solution that came with this issue, was just using a community translation with tooltip. If the names are weird like you mentioned "engineer guitar smash" or "engineer arm kill", we could use the names that we got with a tooltip stating that the names are community made. What do y'all think? Yossef | Talk | Contributions 18:41, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
I think indicating that the name is not official in some way (such as with a tooltip) is a good idea.

Fencing would stay the same Pictogram plus.png  Agree.
Kamikaze would become Grenade Pictogram info.png  As I mentioned, I personally think that its better to have the official name, however, we can use the tooltip and add something like "Also known in the community as Kamikaze" or "named Kamikaze by the community".
Decapitation would become Barbarian Swing Pictogram plus.png  Agree
Spinal Tap would become Uberslice Pictogram plus.png  Imo its better to change this, in order to keep the "Uber" theme.
Dischord would become Guitar smash.

Organ Grinder would become either Arm Kill or Arm Blender (I vote for the 2nd one as it's more creative).
Pictogram plus.png  I vote as well for the 2nd option, Arm Blender.
Arm Kill can confuse people as it sounds as a it means a melee kill, instead of a taunt.
Armageddon would stay the same.
Pictogram plus.png  Agree.
Gas Blast would stay the same.
Pictogram plus.png  Agree.
Execution would stay the same, as there is nothing I could find about that (yet). Pictogram info.png  Perhaps keeping the name but adding a tooltip stating something like "This taunt was not officially name.".

Pictogram question.png Question
This was asked before, but I am not quickly seeing an answer: Who decided the present names?
I am reminded that Valve changes submission names; that is, the original or "in the source" is not always the published "official".
To repeat, Valve open publications (what it is named in catalogs, stores, update pages, or dialogs) makes it official; "in the source" just means "in the source".
I am tending towards Pictogram minus.png Not changing the names as the present ones have the flavor of Valve fixing the original submitted or working name (e.g., "Kamikaze" (descriptive) vs. "Grenade" (lame)).
OTOH, "Grenade!" would only work for a variant animation where Soldier fumbles and with shocked expression (with a pin hanging on a finger) drops one of the Grenades, that then explodes with the same effect (Any takers? I think that would sell!).
Yeah, a tool tip could work, but wouldn't Trivia work for any publishes names that are different in the source.

These are all Valve-made and none of the taunts associated with it are made by the community, as far as I know. The current ones are, as far as I know, completely made up and not official in any way. I think if we're gonna use made-up names that we've given ourselves despite them having their official names (While "Grenade" may not be a good name, I think when it's something like that it's fine to not have an official name, but it should be added that it's unofficial). Only for Gas Blast and Armageddon are these names findable without source code at all (namely, in the console when someone gets killed by it). What it's named in the source code is an infinitely more official name than one that's made-up by someone.
GrampaSwood (talk) 15:42, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
Pictogram plus.png Some of them

I think some of these taunt names could be changed/have a tooltip with their "real" names added. Some of the Valve names I think are better than the one's on the wiki and should be changed, such as High Noon, Grand Slam, Arm Blender, and maybe Uberslice (I think Spinal Tap is more creative, but uberslice could work). However some others could just have a tooltip showing the Valve names such as grenade, barbarian swing (I like this one but I think more people would recognize it as decapitation), and guitar smash. We would need a few more people to give their opinion on this before making any changes, but I'm just throwing my opinion in the ring for now. Perhaps we could have a table with votes for changing names or just adding a tooltip, similar to Yossef's table.

I agree with keeping some of them (namely Kamikaze, because "Grenade" could refer to a bodygroup, Demoman's grenade launcher, the projectiles from the grenade launcher, etc.), Idk if I specified that in my initial post. I think for now we'll have to vote yes or no and then have a vote on if some should change or not (it makes it easier due to having only 2 rather than 3 options).
GrampaSwood (talk) 16:25, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
This wiki treats information that appears only in game files or stolen IP (leaked source) materially different than we treat information that is publicly published by Valve (GUI, patch notes, stores, catalog, update pages); we apply such policies as unused or removed content. In this case, I would see the names in the leaked source as "unused", in that Valve has not used them publicly.
The appearance of a taunt name within leak source is evidence of that fact alone -- To extrapolate from that fact to state that those names are Valve's >official< names is speculationOfficially, Valve added most of these taunts to the game without naming them; therefore, they are officially unnamed. IIUC, under this wiki's procedures a decade ago, this wiki named them, and effectively these are the de facto Community names for these items (unless the wiki had a Valve source for the wiki's names).  Yes, that does put this Wiki into an interesting conundrum; officially unnamed taunts have, naturally, coverage in Valve's official TF Wiki, but under Community names. Technically (YMMV), this Wiki is a publishing arm of Valve ...
Without a name-by-name deep search of the origins of each of the Wiki's names, I am not prepared to definitively say that that they have no officiality with respect to Valve. I think Valve has sideways accepted Showdown. If I could throw pixie dust up in the air, I would have Valve post here "I wish you were my son taunt namers, 'cuz all of our names were steamers!"

'In this case, I would see the names in the leaked source as "unused", in that Valve has not used them publicly.'
I'd argue that having an unused/unpublished name is a lot better than ones that have been made up ourselves, as these have an actual basis by Valve (the Organ Grinder taunt is even visible in-game as being called the Arm Blender). I think how much we like the unofficial names over the official names should be completely irrelevant, as long as the taunt's official name is descriptive (such as "Arrow Stab" over "Skewer") rather than something like just "Grenade" it should be used. The current ones are entirely fan-made and have been here before the wiki was moved to the current domain and can't be tracked. I'd say that unless a source can be found for the unofficial names, the ones from the code are seen to be official. A source for both Gas Blast and Armageddon can be found within TF2 itself, same for the Arm Blender.

Pictogram plus.png  Agree with Gramps. If the change takes place, I suggested above how we could handle it. Yossef | Talk | Contributions 15:43, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
Hey, I was wondering if there are any updates? Are these changes gonna be implemented? Out of curiosity <3. Yossef | Talk | Contributions 18:57, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Seems like majority votes for at least renaming, so I'll move them once I'm back.
GrampaSwood (talk) 21:31, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

So, moving took a bit longer than just going back home. I've moved all the pages now, however, I do need help with the cleaning up of it all. For example, every page that directs to the old names of the taunts should be replaced with the new names, the files should be moved (i.e. the kill icons), the dictionary entries should be updated. However, for the dictionary, leave the original names up and add the other names as an option (i.e. {{item name|Showdown}} should still produce "High Noon", as opposed to giving an error). For header names, such as on the strategy pages, I would recommend going with == {{Anchor|oldname}} [[New Name]] ==, so the old name still redirects there.

Slowed down music with custom files

If a server with sv_pure 1 doesn't allow custom taunt sounds, the music of taunts such as Conga or Kazotsky Kick is slowed down.

I'd argue this is an issue with sv_pure 1, so the bug should be documented. It's a rather major bug as well, because it only lasts for as long as your custom sound file is. If it's for only 1 second, it'll last for a second only then be quiet. Although the bug guidelines mention that bugs should not involve custom files, I think this is an issue specifically with sv_pure and how it mishandles replacing the custom file with the regular one, so it should not count as being a bug with custom files (the issue is with sv_pure, rather than the custom files). I'd also reword the bug guidelines to specifically state that the issue should be with a feature in the game.
GrampaSwood (talk) 14:12, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

For reference, there are no actual slowed down music files in the game.
GrampaSwood (talk) 14:17, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Uncertain about this one.
Even if the issue is with sv_pure, it is being caused by a custom file. Without a custom file, sv_pure works as intended. To me, that is sort of like blaming a sick person for being unable to go to work instead of blaming the sickness. - BrazilianNut (talk) 14:36, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Without custom files, sv_pure doesn't do any work because there's nothing for it to do.
GrampaSwood (talk) 14:45, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
The fact that the bug is caused by use of a custom file doesn't change the fact that it is inherently a problem with sv_pure's method of handling the file rather than the file itself. I'd argue that's grounds for inclusion. - Cy-bernet-ix (talk) 16:00, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
The bugs guidelines specifically prohibit bugs with custom files (or rather, that they'd need to be reproduced on a non-modified game). This is a bit of a grey area, hence the discussion.
GrampaSwood (talk) 17:32, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I definitely get why it's something that needs to be discussed, don't get me wrong. In my opinion—and I believe we're on the same page here—the fact that it makes use of a custom file doesn't mean that it isn't a bug relating to the greater game mechanics themselves rather than the custom file at hand. Thus, it should be documented. Cy-bernet-ix (talk) 17:51, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Pictogram info.png  My opinion is to stick what the guidelines says, that we should only record bugs that exists in raw copies of TF2. To my understanding, it seems that sv_pure can't handle custom song files properly, taking into account what the Valve Developer Community says:
"A pure server is one that forces all clients on the server to use content that matches what is on the server. This, along with sv_consistency, prevents cheating by modifying game content, e.g. increasing the size of models or volume of footsteps, or making wall materials transparent."
It seems that this command was not meant to handle custom taunt song files in the first place. YossefTalk 07:17, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, exactly my point. It's supposed to do a thing, but it doesn't do the thing properly. Hence, a bug. Cy-bernet-ix (talk) 15:26, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Hence why it's a bug. sv_pure is meant to counter custom file usage, so it should properly stop these files. I used to have a custom Kazotsky Kick sound and it always sounded fine, so it must have been broken at some point.

Extract Special Taunts into own page and redo the table to include feature checkboxes?

First of all, I think the whole special taunts subsection is now big enough to be put onto its own page. That's another topic though.

What I want to discuss is that each special taunt can be grouped: single-animation taunts, looping taunts, and moving taunts. There are also partner taunts or group taunts. Some taunts also allow for movement, although some will still automatically move the player forward. Some taunts even have special functionality when pressing buttons.

With how many taunts have been added to the game so far, it's really troublesome to navigate the Wiki page if you, for example, want to quickly see which taunts loop. I know, because I just spent ten minutes clicking through pages until I found one for every class.

Selbi (talk) 22:55, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure it's necessary to make another taunt page with only special taunts. The table used to have a description for each taunt and the duration, however, having the duration listed in 5 different places makes it hard to keep it accurate. An edit performed to the individual page is likely to not be replicated on the other 4 places that the time is mentioned, causing different places to have different times. The individual class taunt pages should mention that the taunt keeps you moving forward, taunts with an intro and outro usually mean they're infinitely looping, etc.
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood (talk) 23:09, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
The reason why I suggested a page extraction in the first place is so that the table doesn't need to be just one table. You could have individual sections for the different types, like how ability and kill taunts are also separated over here.

And while you're right that the information is listed on the taunt page itself, my point was that I didn't want to have to click on every single page just to see if it loops or not.
