Useful if true (I didn't even know), but pretty hard to demonstrate on video. Should be redone if someone can think of a way to demonstrate this clearly — Wind 16:00, 25 April 2013 (PDT)
Here's one possible way: Have a mini-video inset that shows someone's hand operating the mouse, and them clicking and releasing the button. It can be live-action or animated. Dogman15 00:17, 26 April 2013 (PDT)
Let's not do a live-action one, but animated would work, as long as it doesn't include any text — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)

It won't be that hard. I actually learned it from watching TF2 videos. Just hold down the mouse button, and the horn stays on your screen. An example is minute 5:25 in this video.--Uknownada 21:08, 26 April 2013 (PDT)

I'm not sure if that's obvious enough, really. If you don't know what is going on, it feels like the buff banner is just being glitchy for a while — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)
Maybe there could be a splitscreen with text in the top of each screen (similar to this video at 0:12). One screen would show the normal activation of the Buff Banner with "clicking the mouse button" in the top, and the other would show the Soldier holding the horn and walking around with it with "holding down the mouse button" in the top. That's really the only way I can think of to clearly demonstrate it. - Uufje 07:42, 3 May 2013 (PDT)
Let's go with that, but perhaps using icons like these except less phallic and more public domain. Could be used on both screens, staying there for both clips but with the button turning red when pressed on either screen. It's better to use icons than text when possible so that articles in other languages can use it as well — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

I really don't think it's a glitch. The Banner has always been able to do that. The Battalion's Backup and Concheror do the same thing (I didn't request those because I wanted this to be approved first). I'm sure you can be able to know what's going on.--Uknownada 23:34, 3 May 2013 (PDT)

I'm not saying it's a glitch, I'm saying it looks like a glitch to a viewer who doesn't know what is happening — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
I see. Okay, then.--Uknownada 15:44, 7 May 2013 (PDT)

I don't understand what happens in the clip at 2:13. Both sides seem to start off identically, but the right side's heavy initially fires a bit more. Then when both heavies fire, the right side no longer has the damage reduction? Also, it's doing that UI bug again with the "reverting capture" bubble without actually reverting the capture. — Wind 20:36, 5 April 2014 (PDT)

Sorry about the huge delay! But I have the finished video here. Please tell me if anything is wrong. Watch Obilisk (talk) 07:38, 18 March 2014 (PDT)
The barrel spin-down animation looks broken. It's supposed to slowly spin down after you stop using it, but in the video it just stops spinning instantly (and the sound stops instantly as well).
For the slowdown demonstration clips, try to start firing before the soldier enters the crosshair (even if you miss the soldier as a result). See the current demo.

Wind 19:20, 23 March 2014 (PDT)

Unfortunately after many attempts of fixing the spin down problem I have had no solution. I re recorded and played the demo, the footage was fine, but after rendering with srcdemo2, the minigun did the cut audio and quick stop spin down again. Anyone have any solutions? Maybe I should just use Fraps? Obilisk (talk) 04:30, 2 April 2014 (PDT)
Is it the rendering that's the problem (problem shows in rendered output, but not when playing the .dem file with host_framerate something), or is it the fixed framerate that's the problem (problem shows both in rendered output and when playing the .dem file with host_framerate something, but not when playing the .dem file with host_framerate 0)?
If it's one of the last two, try playing the demo with demo_timescale 0.05 (and host_framerate 0) and see if that looks good. If it does, you can record the slowed demo output with Fraps, then speed it up 20x to get back to 1x speed, making sure to use blending for the speed up process. That should give you a result that is mostly equivalent to what you would get if you used SrcDemo2 with a 360 degrees shutter angle and no gaussian blending, which should look good enough for the purposes of this video. Make sure not to use the 20x-sped-up version of the audio; instead you can simply use Fraps (or just an audio recorder program) to record your sound output while playing the .dem at normal speed (without rendering), and then you can use that recording to use as audio.
And if any of the above fails, just use Fraps or similar recording software. Make sure to record .dem's anyway. — Wind 20:36, 5 April 2014 (PDT)
Yes, the footage is fine in the playback, but not after using srcdemo2. I will use fraps on the .dem files, shouldn't take too long. Obilisk (talk) 22:54, 8 April 2014 (PDT)

The footage looks good, except when the barrel turns at full speed because of the wagon-wheel effect, but I guess that can't be helped. What can be helped is that the transitions are too quick (especially in the last clips). Please allow more time before and after each clip — Wind 18:49, 19 April 2014 (PDT)

For the record, the spindown issue isn't inherent to srcdemo2 - I was able to record http://youtu.be/Z1iIxfJOir0 with srcdemo2. It also doesn't have the (frankly really ugly) wagon-wheeling. — Armisael (T · C) 08:59, 28 April 2014 (PDT)

Thanks for doing this, the medigun demos aren't easy. Three comments:
  • You should demonstrate the lack of pushback like the patch says, as it's not immediately obvious that such items are included from the description. For example, try jumping while being scattergunned or something
  • Don't disguise as a Medic, that makes things needlessly confusing
  • It's hard to tell what clip at 3:54 demonstrates. For the overheal limit, you should just do a split-screen with the normal medi-gun vs the quick fix. Demonstrating it by alternation in a single clip is hard because it's not that easy to remember how large the health "+" sign gets at which times. The fact that you are able to hold the overheal from other mediguns despite being over the quick-fix's cap can either be demonstrated in its own clip, or you can show that inside the split-screen clip (overheal as much as possible with the quick fix to demonstrate the cap against regular medigun, then stop healing and let a background medic overheal fully, then maintain the overheal while the clip on the other side still shows the regular medigun still overhealing fully)

The clip about being able to keep overheal should be right after the one showing the overheal cap (right now they're separated by the one showing the heal speed difference, which is unrelated). Also, there is a whole 1 minute 30 seconds of blackness at the end — Wind 15:00, 30 March 2014 (PDT)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z16AiNkZ-wM Here is the finished product of the demonstration. I believe there was a watermark on the video before but I think it's fixed. If not I can easily render and upload again. Tell me what you think! Obilisk (talk) 05:36, 26 February 2014 (PST)

Consider using a different framerate and/or blendrate. Here it looks like you're using a blendrate of 2 (2 frames blended into each frame) which causes a ghosting effect. To see it, try pausing the video while you're moving the camera around and you'll see the effect along the object edges. Either re-render it using more blending to make it smoother, or re-render it without any blending, and it should look better. Also make sure you're rendering to 30fps (youtube framerate), not 24fps. Thanks~ — Wind 15:43, 2 March 2014 (PST)
Okay, sorry for the huge delay, I capped my internet so I was unable to upload any videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqQI8hR8bHk&feature=youtu.be Here is the new footage, I rerendered all of the footage and changed some settings around. The bluriness is gone and everything is fine... except that little sound cut at the end of the video :( But you should be able to fix that without re-recording or re-rendering anything, so there's that — Wind 14:00, 16 March 2014 (PDT)

http://youtu.be/5dZWVPFmXJI I had started rendering this earlier today, since the reservation had run out, but it didn't quite make it up in time for the review. I've included it here because I feel it shows several other salient points of the weapon's functionality. — Armisael (T · C) 17:30, 23 February 2014 (PST)
Since Uufje still reserved this demo, you'll have to wait until Uufje said you can take over it or he's not fixing his demo after Wind told. Re: Armisael's demo: I'm not sure what that last clip was supposed to demonstrate. It also doesn't demonstrate what I described earlier. — Wind 15:43, 2 March 2014 (PST)
Re: Uufje's demo: All good, but doesn't show that you can hit both enemies and projectiles in the same shot like Armisael's demo does. — Wind 15:43, 2 March 2014 (PST)
Re: multiple demos: Unfortunately I can't magically make everyone happy here >: In the future, you should post that you're still working on it if your reservation is about to expire (it will still expire, but at least other people are less likely to try and do that demo once it expires if they see a recent message), and don't reserve things unless you're confident you can have the demo done in less than two weeks. Sadly neither demo is perfect still:

  • Uufje's demo doesn't demonstrate that you can destroy a projectile with 15 metal but not 10
  • Armisael's demo doesn't shows what happens when you shoot next to an enemy (0:22 doesn't count because it's from out of range)
  • Armisael's demo doesn't show that you can hit both enemy + projectile in the same shot

I suggest that someone stops working on this to avoid further futile effort duplication — Wind 14:03, 9 March 2014 (PDT)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOOriSgWSr8 I doubt either of us is going to stop at this point; most of the work is already done. We're both really just fiddling with a single clip, which is easy. — Armisael (T · C) 08:54, 10 March 2014 (PDT)

Re: Armisael's demo: Missed shot at 0:17 (held the button too long, so one of the shots didn't hit anything and just consumed metal). Questions and Proposals

Note: This section is for questions and proposals that aren't specific to a single weapon. If you think a demo ought to be remade, then make an entry for it in the Need to be Redone section above and it will be dealt with.

Hit sound missing

I managed to try out Weapon Demoing. When I'm done, I managed to restore all my settings, but my hit sound setting, whether it's on or off, does not output any hit sounds when I hit an enemy. I tried deleting the map, the config file, and even completed re-install TF2, but to no avail. Help?

Dsnwiirocks (talk) 07:35, 9 April 2014 (PDT)

The script sets the hitsound volume to 0 - you'll need to enter tf_dingaling_volume 1 in console when you're done (or add it to your autoconfig). — Armisael (T · C) 09:51, 9 April 2014 (PDT)

Consolevar demonstrations

Some of the console variables seem like they would benefit from demonstration videos. Would it be relevant?--Henke37 (talk) 05:28, 21 April 2014 (PDT)

Can you give some examples that would need to be demonstrated (that can't be done with a pictures but can be done with a video without any text)? — Armisael (T · C) 06:33, 21 April 2014 (PDT)

Player names

I found odd the kill notice on the top right showing the guy who have made the video (his steam name). I think it would look better if the creator of the video change his name temporarily to the class that he is using right now. This is very minor, I think we can add to the new videos, but there is no point of make all the old videos again. Gabrielwoj (talk) 20:02, 25 April 2014 (PDT)

That is intentional and meant to give credit where it's due. Unless the player name makes the video confusing (example: someone named "RED Spy" while they're playing as a BLU Soldier killing a RED Spy), it shouldn't be changed — Wind 20:28, 27 April 2014 (PDT)
Ok. Thanks for informing me. Gabrielwoj (talk) 10:38, 29 April 2014 (PDT)

Is WeGame alive?

I've been looking around, and based in the link provided on the wiki page, it seems like WeGame is no longer alive. The link no longer works on this page as does other reputable tech sites that link it. And the only place it seems like a download is possible is through a 3rd party downloader (ie: softsonic) that doesn't work too well to start with. Is there another program that would be a good replacement for the Demonstration project such as Camstudio? Thanks DC64 (talk) 19:06, 28 April 2014 (PDT)

Most rendering for the project is done using the built-in video renderer combined with TF2. This doesn't work for technical demonstrations (which is what you're interested in, right?) - for menus, FRAPS, Mirillis Action, and nvidia Shadowplay seem to be the solutions that have been used recently (this isn't to say that those are the only options, just the ones that definitely work). — Armisael (T · C) 06:51, 29 April 2014 (PDT)
Great! Thanks for the input. Do you mind if I change the WeGame link to Nvidia Shadowplay since it is also a free download? DC64 (talk) 15:58, 30 April 2014 (PDT)
