Vintage quality
As the update was introduced, all of the items which were previously obtained became "Vintage Items". Their name is now rendered blue, and the "Vintage" prefix was added to their name. According to Valve, "some items that used to be rare will become more common when they are available for purchase. (...) This way, those older rare items remain rare (in fact, they're even rarer, because they're limited editions now). "
Some exceptions were promotional items, such as the Cheater's Lament, Alien Swarm Parasite, Lumbricus Lid, Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, Bill's Hat, Ghastly Gibus, and Earbuds, as well as all the medals and craft materials.
Unusual hats
Unusual items are hats that have special particle effects attached to them. Currently, the only way to obtain these items is by unlocking a Mann Co. Supply Crate with its corresponding key, or by trading for one. There are 882 possible combinations between hats and unusual item particle effects (14 Effects * 63 Current 'Unusual Able' Hats.) The different particle effects are viewable in this animation, and below as they appear in-game.
New methods to obtain items
Trading
Trading is an in-game system allowing players to swap weapons, hats and misc items allowing players to obtain items that they desire. Some items, such as the Gentle Manne's Service Medal, the Golden Wrench and store-bought items and items given through gifts are 'untradable', meaning that they must remain on the original account that obtained them. However, some promotional items, such as Bill's Hat, the Lumbricus Lid and the Alien Swarm Parasite can be traded.
As of now, it is possible to trade with players on a player's friends list, with other players in their current server, and through either player's Steam Community ID.
However, although it may seem obvious, both trade "partners" must be playing Team Fortress 2 if they wish to trade. It should also be noted that purchased items are not currently tradable, unless Gift Wrap is used to gift the "untradable" item to another player.
Store
The Mann Co. Store is an in-game micro-transaction service. The store allows players to purchase in-game items such as hats, weapons, and action items using money stored in their Steam Wallet. The store does not promote 'pay-to-win' gameplay: there are crafting blueprints and random drops available for any non-cosmetic item. Creators of community-contributed items receive a percentage of sales for anything they've created.
All items bought through the store cannot be crafted or traded, except by the use of Gift Wrap.
