Regular Sniper robots appear in small numbers and behave like human Snipers, offering support to their teammates from afar. A notification appears when Snipers spawn, and players as Soldier, Heavy, Medic or Engineer may yell "Sniper!" to alert their team to the robot's presence. Sniper robots always seem to spawn in pairs.
Sniper robots never carry the bomb, preferring to use their Sniper Rifles to hit players from afar. Their rifles emit lasers indicating where they are aiming and giving away their position. If players get close to a Sniper robot, it will stop using its Sniper Rifle or quickly shoot once with it before proceeding to attack the player with its Kukri. Backing away from the robot will result in it using its Sniper Rifle to kill the player. Constantly strafing from side to side and moving unpredictably can help in throwing off the robot's aim.
Once Sniper robots spawn in, they will head towards the predetermined Sniper spots in a map, where they will stay in position and fire at defenders who are in range. Snipers may relocate to a different Sniper spot to get a view of their enemy, so players occupied with other robots like Tanks are advised to stay out of the Sniper's sights.
Sniper robots are deadly accurate, so they will always hit a player in sight if they are not taking rapid evasive action (such as strafing quickly back and forth or moving quickly left after moving right for a short time). Even though they always aim for the head, they cannot deal headshot damage and ignore players that cannot be seen (unless firing sounds are heard), giving players a chance to ambush the robot. Overall, the Sniper robot doesn't pose too much of a threat, but can prove to be a great danger against heavily-injured defenders as well as Medics.
Like Giant robots and small robots with yellow eyes (indicating a higher skill level), Sniper robots have a special threat prioritization where they will focus on enemy Snipers, Medics, and Engineers in their range. In particular, they will focus on Medic players who are healing their target. This threat prioritization also applies to their Bowmen counterparts.[1]
Sydney Sniper

The Sydney Sniper fires shots that covers the enemy in Jarate, turning all damage taken into Mini-Crits. These robots are also equipped with a Kukri and will use them as normal Sniper robots will. Being special robots, they appear far less frequently than the regular Sniper Robots.

The Razorback Sniper is a variant of the Sniper Robot that appears less frequently than traditional Sniper robots. These variants wear a Razorback for protection against backstabs. There is a second variant that uses the Sydney Sleeper. Due to an oversight, it is named "Sniper". As with human Snipers, Spies should shoot these Sniper robots with their secondary of choice.
Bow variants
Bowmen robots have the following traits that distinguish them from Sniper Robots that use rifles:
- They act like regular robots where they will carry the bomb or in some cases capture the gates in Mannhattan.
- They prefer to use their bows in point blank range instead of switching to their melee weapon.
- They lack the targeting laser to indicate their position.
Bowman

The Bowman is a special robot. It is equipped with the Huntsman, allowing it to fight more easily up close, but will also adjust its aim accordingly for distant targets. Bowmen will never use any other weapons, preferring to still use arrows at point blank range. Bowmen always aim for the head but cannot deal headshot damage. In some missions, Bowmen also spawn with several allied Pyros; such Pyros can light their arrows on fire and allow them to deal extra damage. Unlike their rifle-wielding counterparts that prefer to hang back and shoot players from afar, Bowmen appear in large groups which can quickly become a problem if multiple happen to attack the same defender.
Bowman (Type 2)

This Bowman variant reloads much faster than a regular Bowman, allowing it to fire its arrows significantly faster. However, the damage of its arrows is greatly reduced, dealing only 9 damage on fully-charged arrows. This Sniper Robot only appears on the last wave of Cataclysm with Heavy-bots.
Bowman (Type 3)

Bowman | ![]() Huntsman |

This Crit-boosted Bowman variant reloads significantly faster than a regular Bowman, allowing it to fire its arrows much faster. Any player without Crit resistance, overhealed without Overheal Expert or not overhealed at all is instantly killed by one arrow from this Bowman variant. This Bowman variant is only seen in Caliginous Caper.
Rapid Fire Bowman

Bowman Rapid Fire | ![]() Huntsman |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
This variant of the Sniper Robot fires arrows much faster than the average Bowman. These robots are larger than normal Sniper rbots and are immune to gate stuns, but are not considered a giant robot so are still vulnerable to Sappers and backstabs. They only appear on the second wave of Empire Escalation being pocketed by Über Medics or protecting Giant Black Box Soldiers. Move erratically to avoid getting shot.
Unused content
- In
robot_standard.pop
, a disabled template exists for a "Jarate Master" robot, with a fast-recharging Jarate as its main weapon and wearing the Desert Marauder. The template's comment indicate it was cut due to lacking a robot Jarate-throw animation. The comment is// No Anim - NO NOT USE
. Despite this, the Jarate Master works normally if added in-game, as it will use the throwing animation used by its human counterpart.- On a related note, there is a "Sniper Jarate" icon in the game files, which the Jarate Master uses.
- The template also has a Master's Yellow Belt cosmetic that is disabled twice, with a comment stating that the cosmetic doesn't appear on robot models.
- This robot also exists on the source file of Mannslaughter (though named Jarate Thrower), which suggests that this robot was going to appear on this mission but was ultimately cut.
- There is an unused variant of the Bowman Rapid Fire. It lacks a permanent critboost, gatebot behavior and cosmetic.
- There is an unused icon named
sniper_bow_multi
in the game files. It is presumably intended for the Bowman Rapid Fire.
Bugs
- The blue lasers often glitch, being visible through solid objects and walls, even after the Sniper Robot has been killed.
