The Pyro-bot

Pyro Robots appear in Mann vs. Machine as enemies. They are mechanical versions of the Pyro. Unlike other robots, they are immune to afterburn, much like the Pyro.

Invulnerable grey versions of the Pyro Robot also appear in SnowVille, pulling the sleigh.

Normal variants

Pyro Flame Thrower
Flame Thrower

These robots are equipped with a Flame Thrower and attack up close. Pyro Robots that appear with and cluster around Giant Robots eventually scatter when the giant is killed. Some Pyro Robots constantly shoot fire regardless of whether there are enemies nearby; this is typically done to both make a Spy's job more difficult and to light the arrows of Bowmen. However, most Pyro Robots that constantly shoot fire never airblast. Overall, they tend to pose not too much of a threat given that they have to be in close range in order to deal damage and the presence of a Medic can help nullify afterburn.

Compression blast behavior

Pyro robots have the ability to use the Flame Thrower's compression blast to deflect projectiles, but can only reliably deflect the following projectiles:

  • Rockets from a Soldier's primary weapon.
  • Dragon's Fury fireballs.
  • Huntsman arrows with the Projectile Penetration upgrade; without the upgrade, the Pyro robot will miss the timing for the compression blast because the arrow will disappear when hitting a target.

For other projectiles, Pyro-bots will miss their timing and will only reflect these accidentally. Pyro robots also do not intentionally use compression blast to extinguish fellow robots, shoving away humans, or reflect stickytraps.

Depending on their skill level, Pyro robots have a chance to use their compression blast against these projectiles. Like Giant robots and other regular robots, yellow-eyed robots have a higher skill level than blue-eyed robots, which is a good indicator on how skilled a Pyro bot is at deflecting projectiles.

This advanced variation of the single Pyro robot appears only in Caliginous Caper and Broken Parts. Their speed makes them faster than Scout-bots, so do not let them take the bomb. These Pyros are also very skilled at reflecting projectiles and their damage bonus increases damage of reflected projectiles as well. The variant that appears in Caliginous Caper has the same stats as the variants in Broken Parts, but is named "Pyro" and wears the Old Guadalajara hat.

Flare Pyro

This less common variant wields the Flare Gun, allowing it to attack outside of Flame Thrower range, although with some difficulty when a target is up close. Their movement behavior is similar to the normal Pyro robot.

Flare Pyro (Type 2)

Icon Name Secondary Attributes
Pyro
Pyro Detonator
Detonator
Pictogram plus.png +60% fire rate bonus
Pictogram plus.png +80% faster reload rate

This very rare variant of Flare Pyro uses an upgraded Detonator. These Pyro-bots lack the Flare icon and only appear on the 2nd wave of Mean Machines as a Giant Pyro's support.

Pyro-bots that are equipped with the Detonator are not programmed to use the Detonator's alt-fire ability.

Scorch Shot
Pictogram plus.png 100% crit chance
Pictogram plus.png 25% fire rate bonus
Pictogram minus.png 25% slower reload rate
Pictogram minus.png -65% projectile speed

Another less common Pyro-bot variant wields a permanent Crit-boosted Scorch Shot. Despite their permanent Crit boost, the slow projectile speed means that the Pyro Pusher's flares are only effective against close-ranged classes. Pyro Pushers only appear in the intermediate missions Doe's Doom on Decoy and Village Vanguard on Rottenburg.

Fast Scorch Shot

Icon Name Secondary Attributes
Pyro flare
Fast Scorch Shot Scorch Shot
Scorch Shot
Pictogram plus.png +30% projectile speed
Pictogram plus.png +25% fire rate bonus

This Scorch Shot variant carries the Scorch Shot like the Pyro Pusher, but lacks the permanent Crit boost. This variant only appears in Rottenburg's advanced missions, and due to the increased projectile speed and fire rate bonus, it is difficult for defenders to avoid getting ignited even on longer ranges.

Giant Robots

Giant Pyro robots are equipped with a Flame Thrower and behave like their smaller counterparts. On later waves and certain difficulties, they can appear with a permanent Crit boost. Giant Pyros are very skilled at reflecting projectiles, so projectile classes must avoid shooting at Giant Pyros unless they are distracted.

The Giant Flare Pyro robot wears an Old Guadalajara and is equipped with a Detonator, which can fire accurate shots at a faster rate.

A Giant Pyro variant that wields the Degreaser and wears the Dead Cone. Its Degreaser only does 0.05x damage, but pushes opponents with five times the normal force.

Unknown what the boss would have been used for, carries a powerful Flame Thrower that has a lethal 5x damage. Appears to use basic boss stats similar to Sergeant Crits or Captain Punch.

  • Giant Pyros have unused firing sounds for the Flame Thrower (named giant_pyro_flamethrower_start.wav and giant_pyro_flamethrower_loop.wav).
    • There are also unused flame particles within the game files that suggest that the flames from Giant Pyros would appear different from regular Flamethrowers.
  • Similar to other giants (except giant Medics), Giant Pyros have unused footstep sounds unique to them (named giant_pyro_step01-04.wav).

Bugs

  • The Pyro robot lacks animations when taunting with the Scorch Shot. Despite this, it still fires the projectile from the Execution taunt.[1]

Notes

  • The Pyro robot will use its primary weapon's taunt animation when taunting with its secondary or melee. Despite this, Flare Pyros can still kill unaware players with the Hadouken taunt.
