Item sets are a game concept introduced in the Mann-Conomy Update, which applies new attributes (such as greater damage resistance, immunity to headshots, etc) to the wearer when all items in a set are equipped. There are currently eight item sets, five of which originated from the Polycount Pack. Another three were later added in the Australian Christmas update, leaving the Engineer as the only class to currently lack his own item set. These item sets also do not require the corresponding hat in order for the set bonus to activate.

Since Valve is of the opinion that game-changing effects should be available for every player within a reasonable amount of time, hats included in the five Polycount sets were given guaranteed crafting blueprints. The Polycount set hats require four Refined Metals and any weapon from the set of which the player wishes to craft the hat.

Effect

No effect

  • Primary - Crusader's Crossbow: Fires special bolts that heal teammates and deal damage to opponents based on distance traveled; the longer the distance, the larger the amount of healing or damage.
  • Melee - Amputator: On taunt: heals all nearby teammates within a certain radius, who emit glowing circles similar to that of the Buff Banner or Batallion's Backup.

Note: Only the two weapons are needed for the set bonus. The Berliner's Bucket Helm is not required.

Bugs

  • Due to how the bullet vulnerability is calculated, certain non-bullet weapons deal 10% more damage to a Gas Jockey's Gear Pyro. This includes the Syringe Gun, all melee weapons, the Chargin' Targe, and most taunt attacks.
  • Snipers who have the entire Croc-O-Style Kit equipped can still die to headshots if they have around 1 health point. This is either a bug, or a misconception caused by the set bonus description.
  • Players whom have the Experts Ordinance item set equipped will not gain the full benefits of the advertised effect. The item set boasts that it protects 10% of incoming fire damage, while in game, it only offers %5 protection. If this is a bug or oversight in the weapons description is unknown.

Trivia

  • The Hibernating Bear was originally called Big Chief Hibernating Bear. [1]
  • The Medieval Medic was originally named The Medi(c)eval Medic. [2]
