Operation Madness vs Machines
Operation Madness vs Machines is a hybrid Contest-Charity-Campaign community Mann vs Machine event organized and hosted by Potato's Custom MvM Servers that was announced on January 11, 2019.

Contest
The contest for MvM Mappers and Mission Makers was opened during January 11, 2019 with an initial contest deadline of May 15, 2019. No contest rules were initially established, 'other than basic ethics and "common sense"'. The judging was to follow the same judging procedure as the Operation Canteen Crasher contest. The contest concluded on November 7, 2019. [1]
Charity
The event is also host to a charity drive for Extra Life. By donating at least 10 USD through item or monetary donations, players may earn the Madness vs. Machines Hopeful Heart medal. Each time the charity drive collectively passes a $5,000 threshold, each player who has donated at least 1 USD will receive the Madness vs. Machines Boundless Heart medal if they haven't already.
Campaign
The Campaign was originally announced to deploy on May 17th 2019, but it was further delayed until October 2, where the Campaign was released to the public as a "soft launch". The campaign officially launched on November 22, 2019. The tentative date for the end of the campaign is on April 30, 2020.[2]
Mechanics
The players' objective in the campaign is to earn 100 tour points as an individual and 100 contract stars as a community.
Tour points are earned individually by completing a mission from the beginning to the end. Each mission awarded the player a set amount of tour points upon completion, with more difficult missions awarding more points. 1/3/5 tour points are earned for intermediate, advanced and expert difficulties, respectively. This only applies if the mission has not been completed already by the player.
Contract stars are earned collectively by completing contracts whose progress is shared by the entire community, rather than individual contracts like in the previous event. There are contracts for every class (e.g. "Pop it, Don't Drop it!" for the Medic, wherein progress is earned by deploying ÜberCharge), as well as for all classes (e.g. "Titanium Tank Turmoil", wherein progress is earned by destroying Tank Robots). 1/2 contract stars are earned for single class and all class contracts, respectively. As most contracts are straightforward and lack strict requirements, this encourages multiple play styles as any class.
Contract progress (CP for short) can be earned even while replaying a mission, joining a game late or leaving a game early, but will be erased if the wave is lost.
Expert missions
Servers running Expert missions are locked to players who have not finished 5 or more advanced missions (they are automatically kicked if attempting to join). However, as this only affects joining players, this is easily bypassed by voting for the mission itself when one is already on the server.
Accolades
Accolades are percentage bonuses that aid in contract completion. They are "mini-objectives" that, when completing a mission, will grant players bonus CP. If multiple accolades are completed, they are stacked in an additive manner. The most notable accolade is the "Mission of the Day" accolade, where one mission from each difficulty will be randomly chosen daily, and if completed once, will earn more bonus CP than any other accolade.
Miscellaneous
In the official website, there are leaderboards, speedruns and completists that aims to recognize players (or teams) who show exemplary performance in the campaign.
In the case of leaderboards, the top 100 contributing players for contracts are recognized here. It is divided into monthly and all-time leaderboards. A charity leaderboard that displays the top donors is also included.
In the case of speedruns, a speedrunning team is recognized if they've completed any mission in the shortest time possible. Time between waves is also counted, apart from the setup time on the first wave. Major conditions for a speedrun to be successful include a full team, no wave losses, no refunds, and no replacement players. Speedruns are reset every 32 days for other teams to get a chance to be on the spotlight.
In the case of completists, players who have completed all missions in a certain difficulty or the entire tour are recognized here, along with the date and time that they have done so.
Approved Maps and Missions
This table shows the missions and maps that are currently in rotation in the Madness vs Machines campaign. A total of 45 maps (13 are submitted entries from the contest) and 98 missions (27 intermediate, 57 advanced, 14 expert) are available to play. Maps in italic indicate approved maps from the contest phase.
Rewards
During the event, five unlockable medals of different tiers are up for grabs. These medals are automatically granted once the player reaches the tour points/contract stars threshold required for them. Unlike leveling campaign tokens, these medals are separate items, so it is possible to own all five medals at once. In addition, the Pinnacle of Ingenuity medal is awarded to all contest participants whose submissions were accepted into the campaign. The charity drive awards two medals as well, one for donating 10 USD individually, and one for passing cooperative donation thresholds.
Each medal has two styles, named "Normal" and "Gem Only". The "Gem Only" style displays only the gemstones, without the robot hands or metal frames.
These medals were contributed to the Steam Workshop by NeoDement, Sntr, Erikku, sigsegv, Jakapoa, Pelipoika, interrobang, Mayor Rev, Z-Ben, kratos, Nuke, Hydrogen, Hyperion, Potato's MvM Server, DaanBox, Swordstone, and Geel.

Content creators (be it missions and/or maps) are also given out the donor medals and the respective gem medal as a bonus. For the gem medals, they are acquired based from the number of missions they have submitted, and their difficulty (e.g. content creators who made a map or 2 advanced missions and 2 intermediate missions are given the Chaos Crystal medal; on a side note, expert missions are counted as 1 advanced and 1 intermediate mission in this case). Because of this, content creators can gain up to two gem medals; one from the campaign and one from the contest.
