How's that feel, ya blockhead?
The Demoman

The Top Notch is a one-of-a-kind[1] cosmetic item for all classes. It is a painted cardboard box, adorned with several smaller cardboard pieces, capped by a black fedora. When worn by the Demoman, a patch covers the left eye.

The hat adopts the likeness of Markus "Notch" Persson's avatar, a drawing of himself in the artistic style of Minecraft, which he created and was the lead developer on until the game's official release.[2] Valve silently released this hat in 2011, adding it to Notch's backpack.

  • [Undocumented] The Top Notch was added to the game.

Trivia

  • The idea for the Top Notch originated when Notch complained on twitter saying nobody believed he was Notch when he was playing Team Fortress. A reply to this tweet suggested Notch should tell Valve to make a special hat for him to prove it.
  • Robin Walker joked during the TF2 Mix-Up Match 4 that "[Notch] doesn't know, but it makes him take 20% extra damage" when asked about the reason for giving Notch the hat.
