There's a long tradition of brave, kilted men running into battle with naught but a large stick and dangerous amounts of alcohol in their bloodstreams. Now you can keep this glorious custom alive and add a modern twist by attaching explosives to your improvised weaponry!
Ullapool Caber publicity blurb

The Ullapool Caber is a community-created melee weapon for the Demoman. It is a disproportioned World War-era German Model 24 Stielhandgranate "potato masher" grenade, with a white Mann Co. logo stamped on the head and black wrapping tape around the stick. Like any grenade, its original intent during its time was to be thrown.

With this weapon, the first hit on any solid object or enemy (including a disguised Spy) will cause the explosives in the head to detonate, dealing massive explosive damage to both the Demoman and surrounding enemies, with rampup applied, and melee damage dealt to the main target in addition to the explosion. The Demoman will be propelled directly upwards by the explosion and will likely suffer fall damage upon landing. This weapon will not explode if struck against an ally or a friendly building.

After the Caber explodes, the Demoman will be left with only the remains of the grenade stick, which deal less damage than other Demoman melee weapons (approximately 35 damage). Respawning or visiting a Resupply locker are the only ways to restore the grenade to its original state.

The kill icons for the Ullapool Caber were contributed by 76561197976113694.

Bugs

  • The Ullapool Caber may sometimes appear detonated when it is not. This can occur after hitting a friendly building, a Pumpkin bomb, an enemy or the Resupply doors as they open. It will sometimes not deliver the explosive damage to the enemy but still deal full explosion damage to the user. Additionally, switching to another weapon after detonating the Ullapool Caber may result in it appearing undetonated.
  • The weapon does not mini-crit when used with the Chargin' Targe, Splendid Screen, or Tide Turner.
  • While explosive jumping with the Ullapool Caber as the active weapon, the Demoman will say voice lines which should normally be played when scoring an explosive hit.
  • Taunting with Shred Alert or Oblooterated while using the Ullapool Caber will taunt with the Ullapool Caber instead.

Trivia

  • Ullapool is a town in the Ross and Cromarty area in the Scottish Highlands where the Demoman was born.
  • A caber is a long wooden pole (usually a section from the trunk of a tree) that is thrown as a feat of strength during the caber toss event of the Scottish Highland Games.
  • The description "High-yield Scottish face removal" was taken directly from the promotional artwork that Swizzle created for his entry in the Polycount contest.
  • The taunt used for the Ullapool Caber was present in game files and unused since the WAR! Update. This taunt was originally for the Bottle.
