|
” |
The Mann Co. Supply Crate Key is a single-use, tradable tool, available through purchase at the Mann Co. Store. It is a basic golden key with a round bow. Each key can be used to open one selected locked Mann Co. Supply Crate.
To use a key, the player selects the key in their backpack and clicks the 'Use with...' button before selecting the crate they wish to be opened. The key can be used with any regular series crate in the player's backpack, where it is consumed, along with the crate, in the process.
Keys cannot be found from random drops and cannot be crafted. Upon purchase, they are untradable for 7 days, provided the user's first Steam purchase was more than 30 days ago. Otherwise, a 3-day waiting period is imposed. Uncrated items inherit the trade restrictions of the keys used to open the crate(s).
Jurisdiction restrictions
Players located in Belgium and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are not able to open Mann Co. Supply Crates. This is because the Supply Crate system, wherein the uncrated item has only a very small random chance of having a market value worth more than the key's purchase price, was determined to violate the gambling laws of those countries.[1] Attempting to purchase a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key in these countries will display an additional window before checkout, informing the player that the purchased key will be unusable.
Game market
Keys have been a stable currency[2] in Team Fortress 2 and Valve Community trading and marketing. Because the keys can only enter the game markets through Mann Co. Store purchase, they have consistently held a value tied to real world currency.[3]

Unused content
- Instead of the Gun Mettle Key, the Gun Mettle cases originally had their own separate keys.
- The backpack images for them were added later in the Tough Break Update.
- The model for the Invasion Community Update Key can still be found at the game files, despite never being used anywhere.
Trivia
- Keys are internally called decoder rings in the game code.
- The backpack image for the key is a screenshot of a key model. The model was not distributed in the VPK, yet the textures are present.
- The same can be found for the Gun Mettle Cosmetic Key, Tough Break Cosmetic Key, Gargoyle Key, Jungle Jackpot War Paint Key and the Infernal Reward War Paint Key.
- Contributors to items released in event crates (such as the Nice Winter Crate, Scorched Crate, Fall Crate, etc) received Self-Made quality versions of those Crate Keys. These were converted into Self-Made Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys at the same time as all other keys of that event.
