Snipers who land a Headshot with the Sniper Rifle score a Critical hit, though twenty-three milliseconds must pass from the time you scope in to the time you fire for a headshot to be considered a Critical. Players earn 1.5 points for getting a Headshot kill: one point for the kill plus half a point for the Headshot itself. Scoring a headshot with the Huntsman yields another half point in addition to the aforementioned bonus, resulting in 2 points per kill. A fully charged Sniper Rifle headshot results in an instant kill (even on a overhealed Heavy). A headshot with the Ambassador results in a Critical hit. Killing an enemy with an Ambassador headshot yields an extra half point in addition to the kill.

It is extremely important to note while aiming for a headshot that the hitboxes of the classes are not perfectly aligned to their onscreen appearance, especially while performing certain animations, such as walking backward or taunting. It is thus critical to adjust shots accordingly. It may be helpful to remember where the head area is in relation to the general alignment of the body (this does not change, likely to prevent exploits).

A headshot is a successful hit to the head with a scoped Sniper Rifle, Huntsman arrow or Ambassador bullet. When successful, they cause the attack to score a Critical hit. Snipers may do this by landing a headshot with the Sniper Rifle after scoping, though twenty-three milliseconds must pass after scoping for a headshot to be considered a Critical. Spies who make a headshot with the Ambassador only score a Critical hit after an accuracy dropoff period. Players earn 1.5 points for getting a headshot kill: one point for the kill plus half a point for the headshot itself. Scoring a headshot with a Huntsman arrow yields another half point in addition to the aforementioned bonus, resulting in 2 points per kill. A fully charged Sniper Rifle headshot results in an instant kill (even on a overhealed Heavy), unless a damage nullifying effect is active on the target.

Pyros with exceptional aim can score headshots by reflecting arrows with the compression blast.

Trivia

 • Killing a player with a headshot will sometimes cause a special death animation appropriate to that class (e.g. the Pyro does a backflip). This animation has a 25% chance of occurring.
 • With the inclusion of the the Croc-O-Style Kit, the Sniper is the only class that has the option of not being killed by headshots. Damage is still inflicted, but a Sniper with all four pieces of the Croc-O-Style Kit equipped cannot be killed by a headshot, instead it leaves the Sniper with only 1 health even when he is shot with another headshot.
