This article is about Community Outburst strategy.
Note: It is recommended to read the main Outburst article first to become familiar with the names of key map locations used in this article.
General Strategy (All Classes)

- Memorising the portal orbs can be of great use, not only to escape Hale, but also in other situations. For example, you can use the portal orb inside the Big Oak when low on health as it takes you to the Cliffside Shed that has a large health kit inside.
- The healing ponds provide a way to be healed without having a Medic on your team.
Class-specific strategy
Scout
- In addition to its regular use to get health back, the Mad Milk is extremely useful for putting yourself or your teammates out when they are on fire from the environmental lava or Saxton Hale's Mighty Slam.
- Your speed, especially while using the Baby Face's Blaster, can help you outrun Hale and reach a portal orb to escape him.
Soldier
- On top of the general damage reduction, the Battalion's Backup also protects teammates from fire damage by 35%, useful against Hale's Mighty Slam or the lava.
- The healing provided by the Concheror's Rage is useful in reducing the damage taken from afterburn caused by the lava or the Mighty Slam. Activating the Rage after Hale sets your whole team on fire ensures they can recover quickly while still damaging him. The passive health regeneration you receive is less useful on this map due to the existence of the healing ponds, but still helps in reducing afterburn damage before reaching one.
Pyro
- The compression blast can be used to push Hale into the lava as well as extinguish yourself or teammates when they are on fire from the lava or Hale's Mighty Slam.
- The Axtinguisher can be used against Hale if he is caught on fire from the lava, for a speed boost and extra damage.
- The Perch attached to the Big Oak is a good place to harass Hale using a ranged secondary.
- The Manmelter's extinguish ability can be used to quickly gain Critical hits from Hale's Mighty Slam or the lava. Its faster projectile speed makes it ideal for spamming from far away.
Demoman
- The Perch attached to the Big Oak is a good place to set up a stickytrap if an Engineer is setting up a Sentry Gun on it. If Hale attempts to attack the Engineer's building, this can help make him stay away from it or deal massive damage once he destroys it.
- The Chargin' Targe reduces the damage from Mighty Slam's ignition as well as the lava.
Heavy
- The Perch attached to the Big Oak provides a good overview of part of the map as well as a solid place to fire from. Its height provides plenty of opportunity to spot Hale before he gets you and with the assistance of a friendly Engineer, it can be turned into a formidable defensive position with the help of a Dispenser and Sentry Gun.
- A lunchbox secondary can help put out ignited teammates from Hale's Mighty Slam or the lava, especially useful to protect Medics.
- Try to avoid going into the Cliffside Shed with the intent to heal up with its large health kit if Saxton is nearby. Your slow speed and lack of mobility can give Saxton an opportunity to corner you.
Engineer
- The Perch attached to the Big Oak and the Tree Catwalks are good spots for a Sentry Gun as it is high up and requires Hale to go out of his way to deal with it.
- The Southern Hospitality is ill-advised due to the fire damage from the Mighty Slam or the lava.
- Intentionally putting a Teleporter entrance on the river of lava will force Hale to go through the lava, thus damaging him.
Medic
- If Saxton Hale is distracted, the lava can be used with a teammate to build ÜberCharge faster. Note that this strategy works better if there is another Medic on the team, as your teammates will be without any healing while fighting.
- Encouraging your teammates to use the healing pools around the map can be useful in case you die, Hale may choose to focus the team's Medic over other classes, which can leave your teammates without healing unless they know about the healing pools.
Sniper
- The balcony of the Mining Shack is a good spot to snipe Hale from, but be sure to run early if you see him focus on you as it takes a bit of time to get over the balcony's railing.
- Alternatively, you can stand on top of the railing, but this makes it much easier for Saxton Hale to spot you.
- In addition to the damage boost, the Jarate's ability to extinguish teammates can prove useful when Hale uses his Mighty Slam.
- The Sydney Sleeper can also apply the same effect with its ability to apply Jarate. It also does not have a cooldown, letting you quickly extinguish teammates from afar.
- The Darwin's Danger Shield provides good fire resistance as well as complete afterburn immunity.
Spy
- The Spy-Cicle is useful to put yourself out, but can also be quickly taken away if Hale knocks you into the lava or catches you with his Mighty Slam. Stay away from Hale if you see him high up in the air near a group of people as he is likely to use the ability.
Saxton Hale
- Use the Mighty Slam's ability to ignite players on this map to deal with large groups of players.
- As you spawn between the Cliffside Shed and the Small Tree Stump, use the Brave Jump and the Sweeping Charge to surprise and pick off unsuspecting mercenaries.
- Try to stop mercenaries from using the portal orbs to escape by using your Mighty Slam.
- If multiple people are defending the Perch, your Sweeping Charge can help you get onto the platform. Once in the air, you can use your Mighty Slam to isolate players using its knockback, giving you an easier time to take down the remaining players or buildings on the Perch or allowing you to go after the players you've isolated instead.
- Along with their normal use for getting around the map, you can use the portal orbs to prevent the mercenaries from using them, making it harder for them to escape you.
- Use your Mighty Slam to push mercenaries away while they are in the healing ponds.
- You can drain the Boost meter of Scouts using the Baby Face's Blaster by using your Mighty Slam's afterburn, making them significantly slower and easier to kill.
