General Strategy (All Classes)
- Coordinated team play is essential, as individual rushes are rarely effective.
- Players should remain aware of the areas surrounding the control point, as Sentry Gun placements, ambushes, or Spy activity can quickly disrupt a hold.
Class-specific strategy
Scout
- As a Scout, you capture the point twice as fast as other classes. Use this to your advantage when you go for the point!
- If you use Bonk! Atomic Punch, you won't halt enemy captures or speed up your team's, but it's still a useful distraction for powerful enemies.
- Using your Sandman, you can slow enemies capturing or defending the point with your ball. However keep in mind your health being lowered down, stick with your team.
- The Mad Milk is useful on enemies trying to capture or defend, as it heals every teammate who successfully hits them.
- Scouts aren't very useful for defending, but they can still try to distract the enemies by running through their spawn, with or without the Bonk! Atomic Punch.
- The Force-a-Nature can be used to push enemies off the point.
- Using the Wrap Assassin allows you to inflict bleeding damage at range. If a shot misses, switching weapons before attempting another throw can help avoid predictable timing.
- Pairing the Wrap Assassin with the Flying Guillotine increases the potential for ranged pressure, as the Guillotine deals increased damage on direct hits.
- Players attempting to flank deep into enemy-controlled areas should exercise caution, as the lack of nearby support can easily lead to isolation and immediate death.
- The Crit-a-Cola and Back Scatter are most effective when used for flanking rather than direct point captures. The Crit-a-Cola especially, as its risk–reward nature makes users vulnerable to incoming Mini-Crits when engaging head-on.
Soldier
- Rocket spam can be used to deny enemy access to the control point and force them off forward positions.
- The Buff Banner and Battalion's Backup are valuable during coordinated control point pushes or defensive stands.
- Gunboats reduce self-damage when repeatedly repositioning between the control point positions.
Pyro
- Pyros excel at close-range fights around the point, especially in narrow paths and enclosed areas.
- Airblast can reflect explosive spam aimed at the point and push enemies off key positions.
- Use the Scorch Shot or the Detonator and aim towards any pushers or groups of them. Their explosive capabilities can easily light an entire group capturing the point on fire.
- The Gas Passer can be used to weaken clustered enemies before a point push. Just be sure to use it on a group of them to ensure fire damage with your team's assistance.
Demoman
- Sticky traps are effective for denying access to the cart and controlling choke points near checkpoints.
- The Scottish Resistance allows coverage of multiple approach routes leading to the control point.
- Demoknight are best at targeting enemies who seperated from their teams or are trying to flank.
Heavy
- Heavies are strong anchors when escorting or contesting the point, particularly with Medic support.
- Sustained fire can prevent enemy teams from approaching the point during pushes.
- The Brass Beast is effective when holding a defensive position.
- Using Sandvich items to support teammates is valuable during prolonged control point fights.
- Flanking with an Engineer can help push back enemies from the control point.
Engineer
- The Gunslinger allows faster redeployment due to the control point's moving nature.
- The Jag's increased construction speed is very useeful when moving a nest to keep hold of the control point.
- Engineers should reposition buildings frequently, as the frontline shifts rapidly in Tug of War.
Medic
- Medics should position slightly behind the control point or nearby cover to avoid exposure.
- Use your Crusader's Crossbow when teammates attempt to attack forward in order to heal from a safe distance.
Sniper
- Jarate is effective against clustered enemies escorting the control point.
- Elevated positions provide strong angles but should be abandoned if fire damage becomes overwhelming.
- Avoid high balcony areas if an enemy Demoman, Soldier or Sniper are present pushing.
- Aim for Engineers that are building or relocating buildings.
Spy
- Spies can disrupt enemy momentum by eliminating key players escorting the control point.
- Sapping Sentry Guns near the control point's path allows teammates to advance safely.
