*While the feathers tied to the barrel of the Sydney Sleeper are purely decorative, on real life dart guns they serve a purpose: Dart guns fire slower moving projectiles that have greater air resistance and are prone to being affected by wind direction. Feathers, string and leaves are sometimes tied to the barrels of dart guns to give their shooters an idea of wind speeds and directions so that they can adjust their shots accordingly. As the Sydney Sleeper is, oddly, a hitscan weapon and that Team Fortress 2 contains no wind on a technical standpoint, the feathers serve no purpose other than decoration.

The Sydney Sleeper is an unlockable primary weapon for the Sniper class. It appears to be a tranquilizer rifle outfitted with a long scope and decorated with feathers. The Sniper will also carry darts in his breast pocket when it is equipped.

This weapon is fairly similar to the Sniper Rifle; players can fire either plainly or through using the scope, it deals identical damage to the default weapon, and shots can be charged up whilst utilizing the scope. Upon reaching over 50% charge whilst scoped, a flashing Jarate icon will appear next to the charge meter, indicating that the shot will inflict Jarate on the target for 8 seconds. In return, this weapon lacks the ability to deal Critical hits on Headshots. Kills made via headshot will register with the associated kill icon, but will not count as a Critical hit.

Previous Changes

October 6, 2010 Patch

  • The Sydney Sleeper no longer penetrates targets.
  • The Sydney Sleeper no longer randomly Crits.

Bugs

  • Once the Sydney Sleeper charge meter is filled by 50%, ÜberCharged enemies may be hit with the Jarate effect, even though they won't take damage.
  • The darts in the breast pocket do not completely cover the bullets they replace.
  • The Sydney Sleeper lacks a BLU skin; The darts on the weapon are always RED.
  • The darts in the sniper's breast pcket occasionally clip through certain hats while taunting with melee.
  • The sleeper clips through the sniper's arms when he taunts with it.

Trivia

  • The Sydney Sleeper's loadout stats list "No random critical hits" as one of its downsides. This is somewhat redundant, as the weapon it replaces, the Sniper Rifle, is also unable to get random Critical hits.
  • Originally, the Sydney Sleeper was planned as a secondary weapon. [1]
  • Despite looking like a projectile shooter, the Sydney Sleeper is a hitscan weapon. It does not leave a dart stuck into the target of which the Sniper would shoot at. However, unused darts can be found in game files, seen in the gallery below, which may mean that the Sydney Sleeper fired projectiles in beta test stages.
  • The feathers on the Sydney Sleeper were originally intended to be jiggleboned, but the author did not get enough time to get it done before the competition ended.
