The Fire Axe is the default melee weapon for the Pyro. It is a stereotypical fireman's axe with a red axe head, silver edge and a wooden handle.

In most circumstances, the Flamethrower is a better choice for targets in melee range; however, the Fire Axe is typically used on unaware enemies and for humiliation purposes, or countering a nearby enemy Pyro. The critical hit animation for the Fire Axe is a swift right to left horizontal swing. On a successful crit, the swing animation is a vertical up to down swift.
